I watched this as a child with my mother, and she watched it with hers, she she was in love with Anthony Quinn. who was a bit gorgeous you have to say, Brilliant film, one of my favourites, watched it many times, love that ending, its bitter sweet.
Regarding your comment about Zorba the Greek you have unfortunately missed the message of the movie. The Greeks are a hard working people who also know how to appreciate and live life! Something most people are not able to do.
@dafringe He does say "Yia sou levendi" but the rest of the words are in English. Literally "yia sou" means "for you" but take take it as like "here's to you" and "levendi" means a handsome and brave man.
@Ellatha1 Thanks. I did a little digging, too, and "yasou" seems to be a generic greeting of sorts, like hello, goodbye, cheers, here's to you, to your health, etc. And "levendi" appears to mean a good looking man. So taken within the context of Zorba trying to teach the Boss how to dance, I think Zorba is simply telling the Boss that he is dancing very well, or that his dancing looks good, or that he looks good dancing, or something to that effect.
@dafringe Yes, that's good. When Greeks dance you often hear them shouting "Yia sou" or "Opa", or other encouragements (especially the men since sometimes they get a little showy with the steps). Oh, and we don't really throw plates. That seems to be for the tourists.
@Ellatha1 And it looks like "levendi" means "good looking man" only in urban slang, otherwise it means "celebration of life" which now makes me think Zorba is simply expressing how wonderful it is to be alive and how happy he is at that very moment dancing with a good friend. Thanks. Appreciate your comments. ;-)
@dafringe No, it's not urban slang--been around for centuries & is in proper dictionaries. It's derived from "levendos" meaning "eye pleasing" & can also refer to bravery. It's a great compliment usually for a man (girls may call their boyfriends their levendi). I wouldn't read too much into it cuz Greeks just say certain things when they dance. People also whistle, shout & make hissing noises when dancing & having a good time. In Greek, words can mean different things depending on context.
@dafringe I was going by the Divry's dictionary which has been a standard for decades & my knowledge of the Greek language & culture. You asked what Zorba said & what the literal translation was, so I gave you the primary answer. You're looking at an ad for a winery/restaurant. I'm not saying the word can't also mean "celebration" in some context but that is not the typical usage. Google a little more & you'll see what I'm saying. Try looking for "Levendi " or "Greek word Levendi."
@dafringe I think Anthony Quinn popularized the plate breaking thing in that horrible Onassis movie he did...he was busy playing Greeks wasn't he? He did a good job & it wasn't until I grew up I realized he wasn't even Greek! May he rest in peace.
ANTHONY QUINN ES EL MEJOR ! DECIA MI PADRE ! AHORA, ELLOS DOS ESTAN EN EL ELISEO CANTANDO Y BAILANDO JUNTOS !!!! saludos a todos y gracias por este hermoso recuerdo !
We all do need a little bit of madness and wildness in us. We also need to express it when it is at its most real, among friends and those we cherish. Then we can all share what lies within ourselves freely and much more. A great post is this and I am glad to see it in context. :{ ) Wonderful!!

I ALWAYS LOVED ANTHONY QUINN, NOT ONLY HIS FACE REMIND ME OF MY FATHER, BUT BECAUSE HE WAS GREAT ARTIST, VERY STABLE MAN, CLEVER MAN, MA MAN OF INTEGRITY, CHARM... HE ALSO HAS VERY BEAUTIFUL, CLEVER CHILDREN. I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT HE GAVE TO ME AND TO MILLIONS OF MILLIONS OF OTHERS . HOPE HIS SOUL , IF ALREADY IS NOT, WILL GO IN ANOTHER HANDSOME BODY. BY THE WAY, LOVE MEXICANS , VERY GOOD PEOPLE IN GENERAL.
@BrankoBrankov - A very prolific male as well. They sure don't make 'em like Anthony Quinn anymore! Very masculine, fiery, and passionate. I liked him with Anna Magnani. Liked him in all of his movies.
Greece is facing now economic disaster, just like in the movie. I can only hope the Greek people will remember to dance and to laugh, when they'll lose their jobs.
sure man, whatever u say. You should tell that to my dad, who was stuck for a week in Pireu because all of Greece was on strike. 8000 dollars and an entire vacation wasted.
And he was the lucky one, because one of his friends was caught in a civil riot in Athens; everybody was throwing Molotov cocktails, and his family barely escaped alive.
But do you face disaster? no sir! just minor problems...or we should say ...issues?
@darddalgard Being on strike doesnt mean you are in serious trouble. We were on strike so we could claim our rights because the politians steal all the money and folks get nothing, and its a shame to judge all of Greece by those foolish 300 that govern It. Your father was the unlucky on for being caught on strike but that doesnt mean we starve. And btw Greeks can have a good time being with each other and speding a lot less money than you do.
Yes , i know what you mean , you don't understand words like "malaka" "gamishu " "gamothi" "pusti" , but you understand " shit" "fuck " strange thing ... this is a diffrent between language greek and slavic language NOT ! romanian !!!
so ... i dont have problems with other language lke your's and many others ... think over it ... sto kalo !
The phrase Zorba said in 3:01 (giasu levendi) is something we Greeks like to use as a compliment for either brave soldiers, a strong man, or in this case, a good friend. Unfortunately there are some words in Greek which can't be translated in English, therefore I can't help you there...
