I watched this as a child with my mother, and she watched it with hers, she she was in love with Anthony Quinn. who was a bit gorgeous you have to say, Brilliant film, one of my favourites, watched it many times, love that ending, its bitter sweet.

@dafringe He does say "Yia sou levendi" but the rest of the words are in English. Literally "yia sou" means "for you" but take take it as like "here's to you" and "levendi" means a handsome and brave man.

I did a little digging, too, and "yasou" seems to be a generic greeting of sorts, like hello, goodbye, cheers, here's to you, to your health, etc. And "levendi" appears to mean a good looking man. So taken within the context of Zorba trying to teach the Boss how to dance, I think Zorba is simply telling the Boss that he is dancing very well, or that his dancing looks good, or that he looks good dancing, or something to that effect.

@dafringe No, it's not urban slang--been around for centuries & is in proper dictionaries. It's derived from "levendos" meaning "eye pleasing" & can also refer to bravery. It's a great compliment usually for a man (girls may call their boyfriends their levendi). I wouldn't read too much into it cuz Greeks just say certain things when they dance. People also whistle, shout & make hissing noises when dancing & having a good time. In Greek, words can mean different things depending on context.

@dafringe I was going by the Divry's dictionary which has been a standard for decades & my knowledge of the Greek language & culture. You asked what Zorba said & what the literal translation was, so I gave you the primary answer. You're looking at an ad for a winery/restaurant. I'm not saying the word can't also mean "celebration" in some context but that is not the typical usage. Google a little more & you'll see what I'm saying. Try looking for "Levendi " or "Greek word Levendi."

We were on strike so we could claim our rights because the politians steal all the money and folks get nothing, and its a shame to judge all of Greece by those foolish 300 that govern It.
