Well, the tobacco companies did not force the consumer to smoke. However, through the most clever advertising of the 20th century, they did entice millions to take up a lethal and addicting habit. Witness the Flintstones shilling for Winstons in the early 1960's. Children and adults were all fair game, the companies had no shame. Above all else, money. Your health does not matter to us.
ah smoking...who cares if you need a bath afterwards...or that it tastes like a pencil eraser...or that it rots your teeth, tongue, gums, windpipe and all internal organs...or that it has absolutely no positive effects whatsoever.
you can actually get ecigarettes almost anywhere online these days
e-cigarette-review net is one such site that compares the best ecigs and has loads of info like ecigarette ingredients, how the work, if they're healthier than tobacco cigarettes etc
@mxrhodesjr marijuana was never legal, it just wasnt enforced until the late 70s, they legalized it in late 1880s because hemp was putting silk companies out of buisness, silk used to make ropes, clothes and just about everything else
My first cigarette was Pall Mall. It came from a red soft pack that cost less than a quarter. I didn't inhale at first, only puffed on it with my brother and friends while hiding in the bushes or under a bridge. We used to swipe them from our grandmothers and uncles as well. If we got caught, we received a whooping, but getting away with it added to the fun.
We were ignorant about the consequences of smoking. There were no warning labels on the pack at all and smoking was considered "manly".
"AWBEEBIBEEBIBIBBITYBIBBITYSOLDAMERICAN!" How come they didn't show the people who really work on tobacco farms (Latinos, African-Americans and Asians)? Apparently they didn't want white middle class America to know those people even existed. American folk song buffs may recognize the melody in the jingle as "Sweet Betsy From Pike". I like at the end how the announcer has to plug in "And they are mild". That's not what I always heard from Pall Mall smokers.
I quit smoking 2 years ago and feel a lot better, my neighbor lady is 79, I see her every morning on the porch having coffee and a cigarette, makes me wonder WTF I quit for.
0:53 (singing) Here's a suggestion you shouldn' t forget, when you choose the right girl choose the right cigarette.... If she smokes a camel throw her ass out the door! Pall Mall is the answer now smoke up some more!
With a world population of 7 billion people, the world would be much worse without smoking. Smoking SHOULD be encouraged and made as cheap as possible!
Im 15 and i ADORE smoking. now for all those health freaks, you are going to die just like all of us, and you're going to rot in the same earth as any other living organism. so why dont you give me a lecture on the dangers of smoking when your face is reduced to bone by worms. oh ya and btw sorry to say but white teeth dont turn yellow and crappy cuz of smoking, lack of proper hygiene will do that much faster.
hence let people fucking live and lets not regulate life
@ewkeane luckys and pall malls were sold off from the old American Tobacco co....sold to brown & williams who make cools. The Pall Malls taste as good as they ever did...BUT...something happened to the luckys....they changed them and they taste like ass now
@inkey2 The tobacco changed because of the process involved in cigarette manufacturing. They probably found a "cost effective" way of reconstituting the shredded tobacco product or they might have added or done away with flavoring agents such as skatole. IMHO I grew the best tobacco and I knew how to harvest, cure, dry, and prepare it. What I came up with was my own tax free and additive free cigarette and pipe tobacco.
I remember the HORSE SHIT cigarettes that came from Tijuana. That's funny
Pall Mall hasn't been the same since Joe Camel bought American Tobacco. Haven't tried Luckies in years. They probably are just like Camels by now. Remember when L.S.M.F.T. ?

@jimmyjam9014 thats what I was saying....if he smoked for 65 years he must have started at like 15....that would make him 80 years old. Thats like saying he chewed gum for 65 years and thats what killed him. Certainly cigarette smoking is a gamble...like driving a motorcycle or lieing in the sun all the time...of course some peoples genetics save their ass from dieing young regardless of what bad habits they have
@robertjonasson : honestly, not to be a wise ass by saying this.....my dad never smoked a day and he died of a heart attack. Also.......if your uncle "smoked for 65 years" and lets say he was 15 when he started...that makes him 80...which is 3 years "older" than the average life span of the American male......so it really did not kill him per say.....more likely eating a bad diet...meat, fried foods
@Smart0pz : I'm not quite sure what you mean.....I do not support tobacco any more (or less) than I support the alcohol companies, fast foods, the gambling industry, the skin tanning industry, or any other adult choice. Poor diet and physical inactivity kills almost as many people (per year in the USA) as tobacco.....so if you have ever eaten MacDonalds, Burger King food etc "you" are just as big a fag as someone that supports the tobacco industry
@inkey2 Interesting that Smart0pz chose to call you a "fag", considering how that was once a slang term for cigarette. (Or maybe he was calling you a cigarette?)
@rainallday my great grandfather started when he was 14 and died at 89. a freind started when he was 15 and died at 27. bill hicks started when he was 21 and died at 35. my grandfather started at 13 quit when he was 43 and died at 73. i started at 6 (parents smoked, easy to get) and i still smoke and i'm in good health at 28.
@robertjonasson if he started smoking at the age of 15 he had a damn long life! a whoopin' 80 years or something, you are a blessed man if you reach that age!

I've been 13 years without a cigarette, and it still is difficult at times, but I wouldn't knowingly jeopardize my health again for a lack of self-control.

I'd have a cig now but I know that if I use nicotine even once, I'm hooked again and the thought of going through withdrawal when trying to quit again is the most frightening part.
You are really an inspiration to all. My grandfather was taken away from me by cigarettes...I only have one memory of him: walking up the stairs when I was 3. By the way, I ment to press thumbs up on your first comment at the top but I accidentially pressed thumbs down. Very sorry!
Whatta classy time to have been an adult in this country back in the 50's...when it was filled with normal, well dressed, polite smokers, that knew how to dance.
The American Tobacco Company logo's "Indian" used to scare the heck outta me when I was a kid. Did it scare me enough not to begin smokin' later on? Nope. The prospect of cancer and the higher ciggie taxes prompted me to quit.
That Danny Thomas ad made me think, Thanks to these commercials many families didn't have to make room for daddy, ecause daddy had died a horrilbe death from lung cancer after suffering for years from empysema.
American Tobacco Company, making one cigarette, and many cases of cancer at a time. And not to mention beating the communist with cigarettes is American pride. Keep Smoking America!!!
ATC went under in the mid-90's, I think it was...Brown & Williamson acquired their brands (as PM), but then a few years ago RJR bought out B&W. Just a little history LOL but more importantly QUIT KILLING YOURSELVES WITH THESE CANCER STICKS!! I used to dip snuff but QUIT. You can, too.
Good luck finding Tareytons...they're still made, but rather sporadically available. Many stores (at least down in FL) don't carry them anymore..may need to special-order. But better yet, just QUIT SMOKING!!
This brings back memories. It was one of the first commercials I heard on TV. The audio is clear and the picture quality is excellent on this. Good show!
awesome. look how they used to sell you tobbaco. now you've gotta pay mother fuckers. by that time they knew cigarretes killed people but they didn't care
American Tobacco (usually for Pall Mall) co-sponsored "MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY" during its original ABC run [1953-'57; Chrysler's Dodge division was the alternate sponsor]. Ernest Chappell was Pall Mall's perennial announcer during those years.
you got to be kidding me.

that is the best commercial i have ever seen. i am going out to buy a carton of Herbert Tareyton's.

Good show!

I'll be damned, I've always known and heard Pall Mall cigarettes pronounced as "Paul Maul". They should still air commercials like this. :)

@Adrenaline923 I always thought they were pronounced Paul Maul too.
