R-3 deploy a Nendou field while they combine, which keep them in mid air and stop any enemy from coming too close.
For your information, R-1 Nendou field stop the onslaught of a whole Barrellion and Guardlion squad while Ryusei was shielding Arado, Latooni, Mai in OG2. And Ryusei isnt as good as Aya in term of Nendou Field
I think there was a joke in some other anime series about that... but then again, the enemy is probably too fixated on the sheer awesomeness of it all.
No one ever goes in and stops the combination, because the R-3's protective Telekinesis field extends to all 3 R-Machines when they combine. This is more evident in the Divine Wars anime, in which the mechas are surrounded by a green field of energy during combination. This field is impossible to cross, or at least it's very difficult to do so, so the Variable Formation can go on undisturbed until it is complete.
@MechagirlSachiko OR it happens really fast. Combination sequences are usually slowed down so the audience can see how cool it is. I think it happens just as fast as Zeta Gundam transforms.

@DarkianK actually in series of late they've showed that the transformation acts as a shield. watch some gokaiger or kamen rider OOO and you's see their enemies attack while they go to change but the sfx blocks the the attack.
@finaleJ i watched OOO and Gokaiger yes they show that now. but i am talking about back when Kamen Rider was with Ichigo, V3, Black and so on. it was a major flaw. and why don't they transform then head out like they sometimes do. instead they (some of the old power rangers) run on foot to the enemy transform and fight. which is funny cause them running there would take up stamina especially those science nerd character.
It's supposed to look like the Banpresto logo. It's more obvious in the SRX Banpreios. Still theres worse out there. Just check some of the older Power Rangers/Super Sentai.
