what's useful here is the fact that you can't put short pieces like that through a regular planer. A drum sander would be the better way, but most people don't have that.

No it's fucking stupid and dangerous. That tool is portable and does the same thing without being dangerous and dumb. If they wanted to make it useful as what they want they would have modified the plate on the bottom of it with adjustable guides for thickness. So no it is not ingenuity, it is fucking stupid.
