Sweet heavens. I can't understand why everybody is praising that much...
I mean, he might really be "in" the music, but this rendition is simply... Rubbish. Wrong tempi wasting the melody (7:46 for exemple), false dynamics, agressif sound, often rushed...
Ravel was very accure and exacting with his phrasings... So I don't think he would have liked this rendition which is miles away from what he wrote and intended on the score...
A musician should at the service of the music, not the opposite.

@MLBuckProductions But Ravel was very specific, and I mean the right notes, which shouldn't be changed - you can play it with different touches and rubato, but as Ravel said, 'Performers are slaves' - at least he should learn the notes before adding his interpretation.
@Piano194 The trouble with classical music at YouTube is that there's always some guy (it's always a guy) who has been appointed by God to point out the flaws (as imagined by him) in a performance by a celebrated artist. Of course, when you click on the critic's channel, he invariably has nothing to show for his soi-disant genius.
It seems typical for some poor apple with no talent or ability to gain self-esteem on the cheap by deprecating the accomplishments of gifted people.
@ybravura Well, that was a year ago (kudos to you for wasting your time going through troughloads of swill) and I was pointing out that had Ravel been listening to it, he would not have liked the liberal way it was being played. (Having done the complete works of Ravel I think I'd know.)
I don't feel the need to upload videos of me just because some big-headed person thinks I have 'no talent' - I am perfectly happy having a soi-private life.

@soccarina umm, what r u talking about. No one has said anything about him dancing on stage or anything. If you had the decency to type his name you have the decency to admire that he plays not only with his finger, but with his soul.
Sure, the strange expressions and gestures are not the best for the sake of the performance, but he sure seems to be enjoying it. Plus it's quite amusing to watch.
no way. his movings special.already he dont want to play original version of song . i supposed hes mad when i first saw him. but its feelings of him :)
ok the guy can play -yet blinding speed at which he executes the first movement confuses the melody - listen to Samson François's version - much more true to the way the piece was composed (and I think intended) he doesn't choke the piece - This rendition is a bit of a parody actually - and his speed forces him to hit a few clams - 2:04 - 2:102:13 - 2:19, 2:25, 2:41 - really not a good rendition - and there's more clams than that...and his moaning is getting on my nerves...
Fazil Say is one of the greatest pianists today. Listen to his amazing performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring for piano 4 hands and you will be amazed!

At 8:23 he plays a G instead of a G sharp.. And he does arpeggioes all over the peace. I like somewhat like his interpretation, but sometimes it's just out of proportions..
Your facial expression during sex is probably doing you a disservice as well but that wouldn't stop you from doing it either, would it? That is of course assuming that a bigot, disgruntle loser like yourself is getting some...
I can't believe that I'm taking the time to reply to you but here goes. First of all, there's no evidence in my post that suggests that I'm a bigot so I'll have to assume that you're either a mind reader or an idiot. Even though I think it's obvious that you're the latter. Also, what does this have to do with sex? If this has anything to do with sex, it's not the sex that I've had that's the problem. It's the incestuous sex that your mother and father had to give birth to a retard like you.
I can't believe either that you took the time and wasted the effort post such a long, colorful reply, especially after stating that you strongly believed I was an idiot.
What the hell are you saying, you inbred retard? What you're saying makes no sense whatsoever. Does the fact that I believe you're an idiot mean that I can't post replies to you?
If everybody who believed you're an idiot decided not to talk to you, I doubt anyone would talk to you.
What is amazing is that you are still talking/replying back to me!
I hope, at least, all that name-calling and insults were making you feel better about yourself! Anyhow, if you decide to continue this moronic chat, by all means but I will not indulge myself any further...
Hey, A-hole. Don't you know how to read? Why don't you try reading this entire post for once? You're the one who began with the name calling, not me. And now, you're going to pretend you're being classy because you can't hold your ground in an argument?
And I think of putting aholes like you back in their place a social service so you don't have to worry about wasting my time.
then close your eyes and just listen. If you still don't like it, that's fine. But I really don't think what he looks like should have any bearing on what you think of his playing. Since I've scrolled all the way down to your comment, I can't see his face in the video window. And he sounds okay. Maybe not the best... but his gyrations on the bench really aren't the point.
I dont like his performance. He knows how to play the piano but he promotes himself rather than showcasing the genius of the composer. He performs at the expense of the artist he owes his being. This unforgiveable. I hope he changes his attitude. And the real artist in him will come out.
I really don't understand why everyone's giving ezzzie2 thumbs down.
I'm not saying any deviation from the score is bad, but Fazil took it to extremes.
While I loved his Sonatine I, for Sonatine II, I seriously disliked his interpretation. He added his own notes (and omitted some) and his own tempo cues which seriously took away a lot of the character of the piece. (Such as at 5:00, he ZOOMS right through the climax!! Omg!)
Just because he's a great player does not mean he does no wrong.
The slight, yet pervading, delay between left and right hands is extremely annoying. Objectively speaking, it is also stylistically and historically inappropriate. I also don't understand this compulsion as of late to make it look like you're having a prolonged orgasm on stage. The musical experience should be for the listener; with this kind of performance, the pianist inflicts his vision on the audience, whereby not allowing them to enter the music on their own terms.
it looks like your annoyance at his facial features is confounding your evaluation of his playing. If it was the best pianist, I doubt that you would give him the full credit because he is 'compulsive', though that is purely in your head, and is a presumption.
aspoterde, you're really smart. The way you presented your argument is nothing short of genius. They should modify your computer so that when you write anything and press "audio preview", you can hear Anthony Hopkins' voice saying it. Because you're that good. Thought you should know. Same goes for you morelli6. Kudos to you both for having tailor-made literary styles which are nothing short of impeccable.
[Update] I've notice, since responding to morelli6 that I touched upon a hot subject in this thread without realizing it. In anticipation of criticism, I ask that you consider the following: if you read, and are moved by Shakespeare, but do so without formal education and thus never realizing until much later that it is written in iambic pentameter; have you missed out? Is Shakespeare then not as "good"? What of enactments of his plays with female actresses? That isn't period-appropriate!

I can't stand all his moving around. Its put on WAY to much. If he consentrated ALL his energy into the music, ( instead of moving around) he could get alot more passion out of the music. His antics on the piano bench probably contributes to the wrong notes as well. His line of music keeps dropping and rising to quickly. David Fungs Ravel is the best so far.

jajaja.... you all can talk about him, he doesnt even know that you exist, because, you are here critizacing someone who is a great artist,,,,, can you play de piano and create such a beautiful music as him? nooooo.... so what teh hell if he dances or not on the stage
soccarina 1 year ago 16
@soccarina
That has nothing to do with it. Most critics of (any) art are not artists themselves. And besides everyone has the right to an opinion.
ameroffsky 1 year ago
@soccarina umm, what r u talking about. No one has said anything about him dancing on stage or anything. If you had the decency to type his name you have the decency to admire that he plays not only with his finger, but with his soul.

OK, he moves a lot, obviously "telling stories". It just happens. I have definitely seen worse :)

Sure, the strange expressions and gestures are not the best for the sake of the performance, but he sure seems to be enjoying it. Plus it's quite amusing to watch.

Precisely, so why the fuck is he doing these stupid things when it has nothing to do with the creation of beautiful sounds.
I do not like his interpretation, either. It certainly isn't good enough for him to be getting away with his theatrics ala Gould.
When he does anything half as good as Gould did anything, lemme know.

2nd movement is amazing...
Ravel87 1 year ago
ok the guy can play -yet blinding speed at which he executes the first movement confuses the melody - listen to Samson François's version - much more true to the way the piece was composed (and I think intended) he doesn't choke the piece - This rendition is a bit of a parody actually - and his speed forces him to hit a few clams - 2:04 - 2:10 2:13 - 2:19, 2:25, 2:41 - really not a good rendition - and there's more clams than that...and his moaning is getting on my nerves...

I think he's a decent pianist, not the best Ravel I've heard but all right. Unfortunately, his facial expressions do the music a disservice.
Also, the tempo is too erratic for my taste. His rubato doesn't sound like rubato in many cases. It sounds like a mere deviation from the tempo.
chlrldud74 2 years ago
Your facial expression during sex is probably doing you a disservice as well but that wouldn't stop you from doing it either, would it? That is of course assuming that a bigot, disgruntle loser like yourself is getting some...
1 Luv.
Turco949 2 years ago 3
I can't believe that I'm taking the time to reply to you but here goes. First of all, there's no evidence in my post that suggests that I'm a bigot so I'll have to assume that you're either a mind reader or an idiot. Even though I think it's obvious that you're the latter. Also, what does this have to do with sex? If this has anything to do with sex, it's not the sex that I've had that's the problem. It's the incestuous sex that your mother and father had to give birth to a retard like you.
chlrldud74 2 years ago
I can't believe either that you took the time and wasted the effort post such a long, colorful reply, especially after stating that you strongly believed I was an idiot.
Now, what does that tell us about you genius?
Turco949 2 years ago
What the hell are you saying, you inbred retard? What you're saying makes no sense whatsoever. Does the fact that I believe you're an idiot mean that I can't post replies to you?
If everybody who believed you're an idiot decided not to talk to you, I doubt anyone would talk to you.
chlrldud74 2 years ago
What is amazing is that you are still talking/replying back to me!
I hope, at least, all that name-calling and insults were making you feel better about yourself! Anyhow, if you decide to continue this moronic chat, by all means but I will not indulge myself any further...
Turco949 2 years ago
Hey, A-hole. Don't you know how to read? Why don't you try reading this entire post for once? You're the one who began with the name calling, not me. And now, you're going to pretend you're being classy because you can't hold your ground in an argument?
And I think of putting aholes like you back in their place a social service so you don't have to worry about wasting my time.

Wrong dynamics, wrong notes (which sound good but wrong), and wrong rhythms
It sounds incredible to the untrained ear and people who don't know the piece
But I'm not sure if that's what Ravel wanted

then close your eyes and just listen. If you still don't like it, that's fine. But I really don't think what he looks like should have any bearing on what you think of his playing. Since I've scrolled all the way down to your comment, I can't see his face in the video window. And he sounds okay. Maybe not the best... but his gyrations on the bench really aren't the point.

aznvietphatb0i 2 years ago
I dont like his performance. He knows how to play the piano but he promotes himself rather than showcasing the genius of the composer. He performs at the expense of the artist he owes his being. This unforgiveable. I hope he changes his attitude. And the real artist in him will come out.
ezzzie2 2 years ago
I really don't understand why everyone's giving ezzzie2 thumbs down.
I'm not saying any deviation from the score is bad, but Fazil took it to extremes.
While I loved his Sonatine I, for Sonatine II, I seriously disliked his interpretation. He added his own notes (and omitted some) and his own tempo cues which seriously took away a lot of the character of the piece. (Such as at 5:00, he ZOOMS right through the climax!! Omg!)
Just because he's a great player does not mean he does no wrong.

12louys 2 years ago 2
The slight, yet pervading, delay between left and right hands is extremely annoying. Objectively speaking, it is also stylistically and historically inappropriate. I also don't understand this compulsion as of late to make it look like you're having a prolonged orgasm on stage. The musical experience should be for the listener; with this kind of performance, the pianist inflicts his vision on the audience, whereby not allowing them to enter the music on their own terms.
12louys 2 years ago
it looks like your annoyance at his facial features is confounding your evaluation of his playing.

Gnasherator 3 years ago
[Update] I've notice, since responding to morelli6 that I touched upon a hot subject in this thread without realizing it. In anticipation of criticism, I ask that you consider the following: if you read, and are moved by Shakespeare, but do so without formal education and thus never realizing until much later that it is written in iambic pentameter; have you missed out? Is Shakespeare then not as "good"? What of enactments of his plays with female actresses? That isn't period-appropriate!
