I'm 14 and I love this show! I watch it when I get time. And for all those Ernie fans out there, Ernie will return in season 42, performed by good ol' Steve Whitmire!
I don't think this was the exact first new Ernie appearance since Henson's death. That same year (1993), Ernie sang "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon" with Aaron Neville, but they recycled the original 1978 Henson voice track for it.
It was from 1993 to 1998. They added a new location to the set with a dance center, a hotel for Muppets, a place called "Finders Key-Pers," a park and who knows what else? They tried to make the show "cool" and "hip" during that period, too. They introduced tons of new characters like the Squirrelles, Sherry Netherland, Benny Rabbit, etc. The episodes started with this crazy Calypso opening sequence, and when they'd rerun classic skits they added goofy new sound FX and music to them.
Yup,90's is when everything changed all because of Jim Hensons death. They didn't add sound effecrs or music to ALL the classic clips though.Like they didn't add splattering sound effects when "Wet Paint" was being shown in the 90's.
People bashed that Around the Corner thing in the 1990s as the people today bash about the new format on current "Sesame Street," but it isn't so bad in the more recent seasons (2005-present)

When Henson died, the spirit of the Muppets [and sesame street] died with him.

Yeah.. no. Kids still enjoy the Muppets and Sesame Street. They may not be the same as they used to be.. but neither are the kids.

no way. Jim Henson lives inside all the Muppet & Sesame Street characters

Also, why didn't they sing "Auld Lang Syne" in this special? Was it due to copyright info? Instead, they got this stupid 90s-style kid-friendly song.

Ack! This is from the "Around the Corner" era!

What was the "Around the Corner" era? I don't remember that.

Steve's Ernie is a lot higher in pitch, and he doesn't have nearly as much comic timing. Jim all the way (R.I.P)

Was this from that 1993 New Years special? That would have been (I think) when they first revived Ernie.

Steve doesn't sound like Ernie at all. Jim's was so much better...
