In 69/70 we were using a combination of the M16A1 and its predecessor. The older version had an open 3-prong flash suppressor and no forward bolt-assist. The A1 had a closed "birdcage" flash suppressor and a forward bolt-assist. Both rifles had triangular grips and 20-round straight box magazines. These rifles look like later versions.

I know it is a different time and a different war, but as an Iraq veteran (I served as an Infantry Platoon Leader in 2004), I'm sure glad I wasn't in the jungles of Vietnam. I have the utmost respect for those who did serve in those conditions. The equipment and capabilities I had at my disposal was light years ahead of what those guys had. Enemy mortars? No problem. Radar picks up the rounds and get the point of origan and we hace 155mm counter-battery firing back on the enemy positions.
