  • You come up with some near ideas :-)

  • that is soo frickin' cool!

  • I wonder what the "Miniscribe" hard disk drive specs were?

  • HOW did you do that and run windows xp on it?????

  • damnn i wanted to do this so bad with my old DTK computer, i still got it and wanna do it eventually

  • Now I'm definetly going to save the faceplate at least

  • Thanks for this video, I was about to throw my 5¼ floppy drive away because I'm planning to convert my old IBM case to an ATX compatable PC :)

  • nice!

  • I'm going to convert an XT too! Bear in mind that it will be a (Non-Working Parts) XT. Meaning that the Floppy drive, motherboard etc are no good and not repairable! I think it will be a Blast, nice work!!

  • That is pretty cool.

  • That's just wrong.

  • I guess that was Do-It-Yourself job.

  • Love it

  • WHAT THE HELL??? hahahha but thats cool XD

  • No harm was done to the olde computer. Theres actually a guy on the other side you cant see. =P

  • HAHAH I wish i had this for my own IBM... would make getting software onto the machine a hell of a lot easier xD

  • is that hal9000?

  • @naitsabex yes. yes it is.

  • that kicks an amazing amount of ass!

  • WTF????

    A GIANT Floppy drive

I Better mute the sound,i have bad felling abut the floppy sound...

  • lol... NERDGASIM!!!

  • Why the fuck am I only seeing this NOW!?

  • OH MY GOD!!!!! O_O i just got a nerdgasm!! :D sooo awesome job!

  • Do you have a build log for this? I would love to read it. Somebody did the same years ago but they went further and changed the colour of the case which imho defeated the whole object but each to their own I guess.

Oh btw brilliant work on the cd drive :)

  • lol nice

  • That is pretty cool and from this angle, it looks gigantic!

  • Genius.

  • That is VERY cool...

  • I bow to your technical acumen. :)

  • now can i watch DVDs on my old computer! :D

  • I think I had a small orgasm watching this video.

  • @aelievense Glad i could be of service ;)

  • cleaver.

  • Cool. Gotta love custom made stuff.

  • Do you got a how to video? I think it would be awesome to have an old looking PC but is moden

  • wow! thats amazingly cool!

  • You sir, are a true nerd. That is just great. I commend you...

  • :-D thats really a great idea :-D

  • nice mod!

  • pinches anuncios de youtube y de google me la pelan =-)

  • That is friggin cool!

  • wow

  • Awesome!

  • wicked cool

  • nice work

  • COOL!

  • Absolutely badass, great to see a classic piece of hardware getting a new use.

  • aww i remember those floppy drives, i've still got a load of those 5 1/4 floppy disks around here

  • "the new old"lol

  • i would never do the because Microsoft will never make that drive again or the disks ever again! the new thing today is a usb flash drive to save files.

  • "Microsoft will never make that drive again"

  • Comment removed

  • this computer has been used everyday since i upgraded it, opposed to being stored in a closet. like it was from 1990-2006 in it's original outdated form.

95% of the vintage internals were sold on ebay to people who actually needed them to keep their original IBM XT's running. so this was truly a win win for everybody. as there is no shortage of of original IBM XT's

  • No shortage of original IBM XT´s? Maybe where you´re from, but here they are very hard to come by. In 1999, I purchased my first IBM 5160 from an old neighbor of mine for $20.00! After it malfunctioned and I returned it for a refund, I never saw another one again up close until 2006.

  • Gesh your a cheapsake! Your wanting a refund for a 20 year old computer that stopped working!

Your a fool too, because the parts are worth more than you paid for it! (way more!)

  • Dude, this happened ten years ago and I was only 13 at the time. That computer is long gone now.

  • @shooter83 i wonder if they realized what they said... facepalm lol

  • and your point is?

  • @thedoglover555 i use 31/2 floppy disks

  • @thedoglover555 I thought floppies would linger for a long time. That was before flash drives became both bootable and inexpensive.

  • That is freaking AWESOME... old school in appearance but new technology under the skin...Sweet

  • good theft deterrent

  • how on earth did you do that? i don't care if it's just for show or not

  • assuming that it didn't work: Awesome work :)

  • nice idea ;)

  • lol

  • awesome!

  • SUPER!!! ^_^

  • now you're just going to confuse the n00b computer people.

  • It would be awesome if someone where to make and sell modern computers that not only look and feel like the original but work like the original and then some.

    Id buy one

  • thats bitchin'

  • thats cool! was it hard to do?

  • Shame to see these vintage computers gutted and violated like this

but its also awesome it aint in a land fill and that someone is getting use out of them,

so i say your craftmanship is awesome,

nothing i couldnt do with a little hot glue and a dremel though.

i just hope you were kind enough to e-bay the rest of the guts. :) IBM made some of the highest quality computers ever made. if memory serves me right they were made in New York

right here in the u.s.a. i wish they still made desktops.

  • I refuse to gut mine until it dies.

  • i put my XT away for a while, so i pulled the hard disk to store in a safe spot even if it is only 15Mb

    XD

i need to back it up just for the sake of posterity, its still got a letter on it my dad sent to some lawyer in 1991 XD

  • I received my IBM 5160 for free three years ago with the original IBM 5153 color monitor and XT keyboard! Everything is in immaculate shape! It has been sitting under dust covers for a couple of years. Before the recession began, these computers were worth a lot of money! It´s not a good idea to gut them because they will be valuable again. One word of advice, don´t let your hard drive sit too long. I´m wondering if mine will be any good.

  • i actually have 2 color monitors, but im missing the original keyboard, i had the thing taken apart to clean [near impossible] and i had all the parts lined up neatly and was cleaning the board, and the next thing i knew my dad had tossed the whole thing out and i was like SHIIIIII----

i managed to find a later generic one with an xt switch on the bottom,

the video card in mine also has an output for NTSC video out, and it has a header for a lightpen :D

the hard disk is in a safe spot.

  • I have a couple of original XT keyboards here if you want to buy one. My video card is exactly like yours aside from being able to hook up a light pen.

  • i hooked my XT up last night cause i had nothing better to do, it came on the first time flipped the switch, i had to rewire a 90's era keyboard to get it to work since the original is gone,

the only thing that didnt work was the floppy drive, and it never worked right to begin with,

the clock battery died, so i removed it,

the computer did crash form the Y2K bug but pulling the clock battery fixed that, even though it now thinks its 01-01-80 all the time :]

my hard drive is fine btw. 20Mb!

  • I still have to hook my XT up and see if it still works.

  • well you gotta start keeping you computer so your grandchildren might use your computer for their own nostalgy

  • why are you to dumb to do it your self!?!

  • That's a cool idea.

  • Looks pretty damn cool

  • awesome

  • im so jealous

    u modified it urself?

  • ^lol

  • i'll own a XT someday...And a origanal IBM PC, Plus a PC portable, a PC jr., a AT, and maybe a few PS/2s for good measure. Basically, what i'm saying, is i have a obsession with old PCs despite being born in 1994, and that i'll have a small museum someday.

P.S: Are you using arachne to browse on your XT?

  • *the arachne comment was for KingCrimson.

  • wow such passion. I love classic machnes myself, but seriously (I have two trs-80 coco3s, 2 multipaks, four 5.25 inch floppy drives, and an 8 inch floppy drive and several other things), it's his machine, he can do what he wants with it. In a free country we are free to make our mistakes.

  • my mom said there was a old computer in the attic when we moved here she gave it to me. it also came with an old moniter. i booted it up. it had windows...... 1.1 or 2.0 it was an xt. i had no keyboard from it. i tore the computer apart. and now a month or two later, i get a free dos computer keyboard!!!!!!! i found out it had windows from the image burned in the screen

  • nice i did that kind of. someone gave me a 80gig hard drive i had no computer at the time so i opened it to see what was inside now i get a computer and its got a 30gig hard drive in it the day i got it i was like noooo that was so dumb hahaha

  • @kingcrimson234

First of all, why would we believe that you posted this though an XT?

Secondly, stop getting so butt-hurt over some old tech, fucking saddo.

  • @BOS6940 you really just don't get it

  • @phalxor

Yeah I do, your just a saddo who loves their old tech, yeah it'll be worth millions, but still, ever heard of recycling? Fucks sake man

  • keep up the great work. i'd love a case mod like this

  • Why do people butcher classic electronics? I could understand popping in a 286 motherboard and a 1 gig HD but yikes.

  • hah, this is awesome idea.

  • pretty nice! but how exactly u make it?

  • Incredible, well done!

  • That is fantastic!

  • wow thats cool! Can it work with apps and stuff? I know it's an IBM XT but still...

  • yes it does, it's only an xt case

  • That was awesome. I would love to see more stuff like this around. Some people just really know how to please a crowd. Thanks for posting.

  • got a worklog for it?

  • Nice mod mate! brilliant quality.

  • Does it rly workes? Or did ya just putted the cd in it?

  • Awesome! was that an XT or a PC with hard drive?

  • Freakin awesome man. I saw this from fucking Kaiputer on Mydrivers. Keep it up.

  • Old School goodness!!!

  • wow! thats brilliant!!

  • master!

  • ahahahahahahahaha brilliant!!

  • nice job! I really should post a video of my late 1980s server that I upgraded into a over clocked gamming machine.

  • lol ahahahaah I thought it would get jammed inside.

  • Could you make blueprints and instructions so we can make our own? I want a XT-Lookin Computer that Dual-boots DOS and XP Media center

  • dude! that is SWEET! I knew there had to be other NeoRetroheads out there. I love the idea of taking old stuff and rebuilding new inside. Keep it up man!

  • Now all you need is a VOB of 8088 Corruption on DVD and yer set. ahahahaha

  • AWESOME!

  • lol, i wanna get me one of those! :P

  • This makes one 1337 PC case. I wish I still had my Tandy 1000 just to mod it like this. Good job!

  • Please, how did you make that? Got pic's? Or better , video? I want to do the same thing with mine!

  • Really nice! Next step: PlayStation 3 in a SNES casing. :D

  • genius!!!!

  • pretty cool hack i likes it

  • Thanks for destroy a piece of history; make me remember the egiptians remove rocks from the piramid to build their houses the last century.

  • That is a bad ass case.

I miss the old XT and the metal claknking sounding HD.

  • Nowadays, HD refers more to High-def television. But the hard drive was "sorta" the high-def TV of the 80s!

  • what the brand of your dvd rom?

i didn't found one as yours.

  • Ah! Thats wild and very cool. I bet people would buy something like that!

  • I wouldn't stimulate anyone to alter a vintage computer, but i must admit you did this one pretty neat :-)

  • I'd pay for one too. From the looks of these comments, you could make a bundle. Who wants a clear glowing case when you can have an XT style case?

Back in 1991 I put a blue LED on my 5.25" floppy drive...this was before ANYONE had a blue LED on their computer.

    Very nice job.

  • Nowadays, they put a blue LED in everything. :(

  • Good job, bud! Never thought of that one! Lol.

  • Can you Make me One of those for my Computer? That is really cool. I will settle for Asking price!!

  • Thats amazing!!!! I would pay money for that!!

  • That's sick!!!! Nice job!

  • Interesting and well done! :-)

  • Cool! I've done this a couple times but never modded a 5.25 floppy for a CD/DVD. What kinda hardware are you running in there?

  • Well, the "5.25inch" width of an old floppy nearly coincides with the diameter of a CD, DVD and Blu ray.

  • Thats amazing! I want to buy one to fit in my old ibm xt case.

  • Impressive! They model new stereos after 1940s style radios and put features you would expect to see on newer stereo systems such as cd players and FM radios; and even old concepts such as vinyl turntables. Also, I wish they would mass-produce new PCs that were modeled after old 1980s style ones.
