  • NEGRO DE MIERDA ANDA CANTA TU REGAE NUNCA IGULARAS AL VERDADERO VOCALISTA

  • I am definitely past the whole No Layne No Chains thing. Black Gives Way to Blue is my favorite album from the last decade. I wouldn't say it's the best AIC album ever but it is very much worthy of the brand.

  • Dude, this guy gets closer to anything. Sorry man, but a girl cant pull off singing some of the heavier songs, it wouldnt even sound good.

  • is this some kind of a sick joke? i mean.. AIC fans have become accustomed to "butter".. and now they try to serve us "margarine".. sorry.. im not buying it.. AIC 2.0 sucks ass.. it just sounds like bad karaoke to me.. i think a far better approach would have been to find a female vocalist to replace layne.. i mean.. seriously.. a female vocalist would be a great way to keep it fresh and new.. no doubt some old fans would be pissed off.. but lets face it.. the magic died with layne!

  • HORRIBLE idea. I agree that if they spent more time, they could have found someone with even better voice for what would be expected for AiC, but honestly, the new record KILLS and Duvall brings a really cool, unique aura to the table. He's doing it the right way; a virtual unknown winning us over one at a time. Noble as hell, and that deserves all the respect in the world.

I love female vocalists, but not in hard rock and metal--its just that the songwriting is not grimy enough for my taste.

  • No its not a joke. This AIC, not an AIC tribute band. You have to judge William on his own merits. Look at ACDC. Does Brian sound anything like Bon Scott? NO. But he still a great singer and ACDC is still a great band. There was only one Layne and he's dead. Get over it and move on and while yourre at it let Jerry, Sean, and Mike move on, too. You want a Layne clone? Go start your own "tribute" band. Ya probably never even been in band much less know what its like to have a bandmate die.

  • The magic died with Layne? Cantrell is and was always Alice in Chains, not to take anything away from Layne but it is obvious who the sound that made them great came from.

  • then puke and get the f out of here : )

  • To say that the audio and video is kinda shitty is understating things somewhat....

  • Actually Jerry is really nice I've heard have you watched any of their documentaries or anything? He was one of his friends before Layne isolated himself.

  • Not true. It is my understanding that Nancy McCallum, Layne's mom, supports their decision to continue as AIC. Far be it from anyone to think they'd be doing this without her blessing, even if her heart may tell her to give it to them anyway without their asking for it.

  • oh and dont forget, this is like 10 years later, technology should be better lol

  • Yeah, but back then people had actual video cameras... now everyone just has their crappy camera phones.

    That's the difference lol.

  • good point lol. i wonder if they even allow video cameras into those concerts now

  • why is it that the home videos of aic with layne are almost always good quality. seems like every person who shoots live footage with duvall is a friggin idiot

  • It was pointless posting this because you can't hear SHIT. Ugh...

  • Jerry really needs to change the name of the band and stop believing he can replace Layne

If fans of AIC know that its him, they'll still listen to his music and give him a chance

Its not like a lot of the fans a happy about him getting William Duvall

  • well i cant wait to see them in march

  • It's hilarious how some fans think the band is going to simply pick up where they left off 13 years ago. They're all in their 40s, the music scene now is totally different and, well, William Duvall isn't very good. I wouldn't get your hopes up too high.

  • What you don't realize is that Jerry also wrote most of the lyrics for the songs. Did people stop seeing AC/DC when Bon Scott died, or did they change there name...nope. What about when Cliff Burton died? I just saw them in concert, and I was skeptical, but Duvall actually did pretty good. No one forced Layne to overdose except for Layne, R.I.P. But the spirit of AIC lives on, and I hope they pick up where they left off.

  • Jerry did not write most of the lyrics to the AIC catalog. He and Layne shared the load 50/50. In fact, Layne wrote 75 percent of the lyrics off their self-titled album. As for the AC/DC thing, people need to keep in mind that Bon Scott wasn't the original singer; there was another guy named Dave Evans before he came along. Plus AC/DC lyrics aren't exactly deep. They don't even skim the surface of AIC lyrics, especially Layne's.

  • @shanejacobus Ever heard of citation?

  • @shanejacobus

75% of the self-titled sure, but that is not their whole catalog, so citing that does not mean much. I don't know where you are getting the 50/50 thing either. Inez and Kinney I believe had some input too. Making it all about Layne, or all about Jerry, or even both of them, is very short sighted. When you're in a band, every member has to contribute, because not everyone in the band knows how to play each instrument. Also, music and lyrics are different.

  • @Rugalef That post of mine you responded to is 2 years old. If you look at my more recent posts, you will see that I've said that I'm past the whole No Layne No Chains things. Granted the name came from Layne's earlier band Alice N' Chains and he contributed a lot more to their catalog than some people give him credit for, but AIC is and always has been mostly Jerry's band as he has written or co-written nearly every song in their catalog.

  • How can you people wanna see AIC live after the death of Layne? It's not the same. This new singer hasn't had the same experiences as Layne, how the fuck can he sing stuff that Layne wrote? That is no better than stealing someone's identity cause lot of lyrics were written in 1st person singular. If the band now wanna go on without Layne, can't they just change their name and never play old AIC songs again? AIC live in the 21st century is as wrong as it gets. Or instrumental sets perhaps?

  • I meant to reply to kevpark21, but it screwed up and put my post at the top.

  • That was different. Mike Starr left on his own accord.

  • Yeah. Mike Starr didn't "make" alice in chains what it is today. Not to mention that a lot of people don't even realize they had two.

  • why, jerry, why?

  • Most people started listening to AIC because of Layne's vocals, not the bass playing.

  • i hate the new singer he is fucking gay

  • Look i'm fine with this lineup under one condition and I'm sure you all will agree:

They Change their fucking name! Alice In Chains i believe was originally concieved by Layne, it should be put to rest with him, i'll buy the new record if the band changes their name.

  • This isn't a mere line-up change.

We're talking about replacing one of the most powerful, distinct voices in rock history with some guy from a low-rent bar band.

  • layne the best vocal of aic, but cantrell sings better than William Duvall. he must be the voice of alice in chains!!!!

  • Would you consider buying the new record or seeing them live if they announced that 20 percent of all recording and touring royalties would go towards the Layne Staley Fund and each of them - Jerry, Sean, Mike, and Will - would pay five percent?

  • you dickheads

    NO LAYNE ...NO CHAINS

  • that singer sucks shit; jerry jerry what were u thinking? AIC r no more w/o layne, maybe they cud reform as a new name ye - the singer is ok but doing all AIC stuff is just a tribute band. they shud def reform as a new name an write some new shit. id like to hear some new stuff with the old guys :)

  • I agree. If they are serious about recording with this guy, they need to stop calling themselves AIC. I wouldn't have a problem with it if Jerry, Sean, and Mike had decided to continue as a trio like the guys from Big Country have done since the passing of Stuart Adamson. But William Duvall is not AIC. He never was AIC. He never will be AIC.

  • i agree... AIC died with Layne

  • I think if they had found a new singer much sooner, we would be OK with them not changing the new name. But now the name 'Alice in Chains' rests in peace with Layne.

This guy is an decent singer, though nowhere near as good as Layne. Just don't judge him by this video, as the recorded audio is pretty crappy.

Whenever the new album drops, I'll still get it. In Jerry we trust.

  • Shut up dumbass. William Duvall probably was the best thing that happened to AIC in the last 6 years. I was depressed when Layne died coz i thought AIC died with him. But now AIC is alive again thanks to William & this guy sounds grunge & also sounds eeerily similar to Layne, considering he's a black guy, not doing lame rap.

  • yeah yanidy. they wanted to get alice in chains back together because they were unbelievable.William duvall is an amazing singer, who jerry thoughtfully picked out.

  • That's right. Anyway Jerry Cantrell is the real power behind AIC, Layne just made it greater. Look, in Degradation Trip, songs there are very AIC but in Mad Season, their songs ain't that great, i just bought the album because of Layne's voice.

  • I'll take Mad Season over Jerry's solo stuff any day as long as he and the other guys keep up this charade.

  • IMO thats bull. Jerry Cantrell was a big part of AIC but Layne was the face of AIC and wrote half of their music. No offense to William Duvall, but you don't just go and replace a sensational performer like Layne. Duvall is tallented and I'm all for them making new music and performing live but they should at least stop using the name Alice In Chains.

  • God that fucking asshole singer sucks

  • I don't like the fact that Jerry, Sean, and Mike Inez are planning to release new material under the name Alice in Chains with someone else on lead vocals anymore than you do, emoblowsass, but calling him an asshole is low.

  • Jerry, Sean, and Mike have every right to move on and continue as a band with Jerry or someone else on lead vocals. But they should do it under a different name and put AIC to rest along with Layne.

  • This is fucking awful Jerry wake up, Alice died in 2002.

  • I think you'll find Layne will be writing nothing as he is a bit too dead at the moment. May he rest in peace.

  • LOL. Very well put sir.

    R.I.P. Layne

  • William Duvall needs to put his fucking arm down.

  • Jerry doesn't write everything. Layne writes the songs about drugs while jerry writes about dark shit.

  • Jerry wrote most of the music, but he and Layne shared the load 50/50 with the lyrics. In fact, Layne wrote the lyrics to 75 percent of the songs off Tripod. Get your facts straight.

  • I don't think Layne would appreciate the new album very much, a tour would be awesome, but I don't get carrying on without him, talking about Shitting on someone's Legacy. What if Nirvana tried to reform without Kurt or other bands like that...

  • i get where your coming from but you cant expect the rest of the band to just pack up and call it quits just because somebody died.if that were the case then bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin wouldnt be as popular as they are now.

  • there are so many better vocalists that fit so much better with AIC. Cnatrell knows AIC is a legendary band, why would he choose such a shitty vocalist? This caliber of a band deserves the best of the best..and this guy just sucks balls...

  • Fuckin true. My god... I keep on thinking Layne cannot be replaced. He was born to play in AIC

  • Guys, they aren't trying to replace Layne. I think that it would be Layne's wish that AiC's music would carry on, and i think that it is not disrespectful to Layne that Jerry and the guys are continuing to play Layne's/AiC's brilliant music.

  • For sure man! Just dig the music, and i have always wanted to see some chains when i was younger so, atleast someone sounds "Similar" (not exactly the same) to Layne. :)

  • fuck!!! this guy !!! fuck them anyway, they should show more respect for layne.....never gonna be the same never without layne....

  • thats why its a tribute to Layne that they carry on R.I.P Layne ps I was at this show fuckin amazin met william and sean after the show

  • layne stayley was a great singer but he gets too much credit, the person that should get as much if not more than stayley is jerry cantrell because he wrote almost all of alice in chains' songs and you would be surprised at how much backup singing he does while playing guitar

awsome band though new guy is ok still sounds like alice in chains

  • yeah dude jerry did most of the writing but the best writing came from layne the best song that jerry wrote was would? which was writin for andrew wood from mother love bone and but the best songs from alice in chains were written by layne and yeah he does a shit load of back up singing but to me layne staley is the greatest singer ever (just my opinion) so yeah i just thought id put my insight there lol

  • jerry cantrell also wrote them bones down in a hole and rooster

  • yeah i know but the best he wrote was would? layne wrote some of the best such as angry chair, man in a box, and junk head granted rooster is an aweosme fucking song you know but layne is the best singer to come out of the seattle scene cobain isnt shit he was good but nowhere to be compared to layne so thats why i say he is the best

  • whatever it really doesnt matter who we think the best musician/songwriter is they were a fucking awesome band and layne's voice can never be recreated

  • couldnt have said it better myself bro

  • Jerry wrote most of the music, but he and Layne shared the load 50/50 with the lyrics. In fact, Layne wrote the lyrics to 75 percent of the songs off Tripod.

  • What are you guys saying that they're trying to replace Layne? I remember reading somewhere that they said they could never replace Laybe. William DuVall is just filling in so they could play those songs one last time.

  • I think what is missed is that Cantrell is and has been the musical genious of the band. I saw AIC at a Clash of the Titans show in June 1991. I will never forget the energy they brought to that show. I flew 2500 miles to see this Boston show just to make sure I saw one of the 5 U.S shows before they went onto the festival's overseas. To have what we are getting from them now is great.Layne will never be replaced. His lyrics were so meaningful showing his pain and troubles.

  • HOLY SHIT! THIS GUY SINGS FUCKING AWSOME! NOT STALEY, BUT FUCK HE HAS IMPRESSED THE SHIT OUT OF ME! Fuck, now I can't wait for them to play at THE RAVE!

  • I think this is catharsis for Cantrell, to link between his past identity and his future.

That said, Wes Scantlin would be my choice in terms of maintaining the sound style, I actually thought "Drift and Die" was a newly released AIC song the first time I heard it.

  • Christ people! Research this shit! Jerry said that Duvall is a GUEST singer. The reason they did this, was for fans who never got to see AIC play. He said that if they ever DO get a new permanent singer, they're renaming the band.

  • i went to the show at avalon, my guess was that jerry was going to do the vocals, i think he could have pulled it off. I didn't like the guy they had up there. Not a bad voice but i don't think it was an AIC voice. It was better then Phil Anselmo.

  • It's sad when we need to hang on to something.

So much we reduce ourselfs to to imitation.

  • They should start as a new band. With Jerry's old band name "Diamond Lie".

  • Agreed. That would be awesome.

  • looked like a great performance, by a great band, and a decent touring member, in William Duvall

  • the new singer is ok i guess he is no staley !! but hes allright

  • fuck them for trying to replace layne. they should be remembered as an incredible band with an amazing singer. not a bunch of guys that didnt know when to call it quits..

  • dude are you kidding? why quit doing something you love? We all know that no one ever will or can replace Layne, they are simply having fun playing music as a band again. To be honest i love it. He isnt the best singer in the world, but Alice in Chains is definitely one of the greatest bands ever, and i am glad to see them come back to the music scene. Bands nowadays (emo screamo, punk crap) could a take a lesson from these guys.

  • i completely agree, i was kinda in a bad mood when i made that comment lol.. full credit to jerry for keeping a good thing going!

amazing band, but god i hope no one ever forgets layne.

  • yeah, i gotta admit duvall definetly has some balls.

good stuff, definetly going to see them when they ocme by

  • not bad, i was expecting a lot worse from this staley replacement.

  • man jerry hasn't aged a bit... it's fucked up that i can't see them touring cause i live in a remote sht hole like Israel...(touring wise not in general...:)

  • ALICE IN CHAINS my ass the guy does no justice to the original AIC. i'll stick with buying the rest of their cds, dvds, and their vhs that i haven't got. the band still sounds good though.they re probably worth toughin it out.
