Everyone should own TOTY.Probably the most perfect collection of songs ever assembled. It also never seems to date, timeless.A true masterpiece from one of the best songwriters ever.
my fave track on this absolutely Essential masterpiece of an album for anyone who appreciates great music. 22 tracks no sh#tfillers, every one a precious audio gem. Frank Black u're a God.
This takes me back... We used to drive around listening to TOTY on tape. It was mostly downhill from here... But when he put this collection out, we were in awe... I still like the occasional FB tune, but this was the apex. "Rarer none are the precious cheeks..."
Frank took a back-to-basics approach a few years ago. Talked about heroes like Dylan and Cohen. You don't need heroes when you can write otherworldly songs like this.
People can go ahead and listen to what's popular, or they can actually listen to music that means something to the people who write it. Frank Black is a genius and it's a shame that most people don't even know who he is.
@DDball very true, one of the most brilliant, under-appreciated artists working today. no one else produces such high quality work consistently. NO ONE.
Put together all the capital letters :) Juxtaposed in each moment's sight Everything that I ever saw And my one delight Nothing can strike me in such awe Mouth intricate shapes the voice that speaks Always it will soothe Rarer none are the precious cheeks Is the size of each sculpted tooth Each lip and each eye Wise is the tongue, wet of perfect thought And softest neck where always do I Lay my clumsy thoughts She is that most lovely art Happy are my mind, and my soul, and my heart.
genius. if you come to them with an open mind, EVERY album of franks ( pixies, frank black solo, black francis, and with the catholics) are brilliant and have songs that will amaze you. if you havent heard any of his music, do yourself a favor and check it out.
@adgato75 Yeah I got into the pixies about six months ago. I watched a movie called fight club which was ok. But at the end they played the song where is my mind. I was like wow thats a good song I wonder who sings it. 6 months later im the biggest damn pixies/frank black fan alive. Though not the greatest movie, fight club will always hold a special place in my heart for getting me into the pixies. Same thing for the movie Garden State which got me into the shins lol.
@IronManOfficialguy i thought fight club was awesome lol. much better than garden state. i thought garden state was trying too hard to be cool, and i couldnt stand natalie portmans character.
@adgato75 I thought Garden State had its moments. I liked fight club I just dont think it was all it was hyped up to be. It had great acting, great direction, but something about it didnt click with me. I seem to be the only person in the world who didnt think it was awesome lol. Everytime I say that people look at me like I just murdered someone. Same with the movie Donnie Darko. Everyone shits their pants when they find out I didnt like it.
This whole album is just as powereful as it was 94. Speedy Marie is such a fabulous piece of work. It doesn't really matter what he calls himself - he's the man!!
bought the album played the piss out of it in 94" reminds me of the fat genius iconoclast i thought i was in high school that year...... if only chicks could understand that.... so it's an unrequited love peice in my mind.
What's even more beautiful about that amazing ending is that it's an acrostic for Speedy Marie, herself - Jean Marie Walsh! Frank Black is brilliant. <3
quite simply from beginning to end one of the top twenty albums of the last two decades. The second half is definitely quirkier, but this LP freaking rules! Best of the post-Pixies stuff by a long way.
i just heard this song and love it.....i loved a few songs by the pixies.....hey...gigantic.....where is my mind.....but i haven't heard a lot of their other stuff......could someone recommend some of his songs you really like for me to try out? thx!
This album and the "Frank Black album along maybe with his 'Black Letter Days" are amongst his best post Pixies but NIETHER are equall to Surfer Rosa and the DooLittle album.....
It is a long time I did not hear this song. I almost forgot that Frank Black is a f.... genius. The only problem with F. Black is that he needed a good producer behind him to sort out all his songs and take only the very best one. This album was great but a little bit too long imho.
I would agree it feels like the first 9 songs are a lot better than the other half, but having them there is not a problem, sometimes im in the mood to listen to some of them
The first time I listened to "Teenager Of The Year", I had the impression it began falling apart as the second half started playing, beginning with Mulholland, due to lack of hooks the album suffers from then onwards. Yet, I slowly found the latter half somehow pleasing, if not as good as the first one. To me, a very good album overall, although inconsistent.
It is rare to see genius in practice, but this is it. How this guy isn't seen as THE brilliant recording artist of our time is beyond me. Is complex and accessible at the same time. The hooks are unstoppable. The lyrics unexplainable. Pixies fans that stopped listening to FB, especially to the first two solo efforts, have missed out big time.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
because out of all his post-pixies discography, this is the only good album. it's a fantastic album, sure, but the others are quite rubbish. in the last two he's really lost it. stuff like that should not have been even relased.

..i actually had to go on wikipedia, because i was quite puzzled.. but this IS the second solo album. adn the first, Frank Black, the one with "hang on to your ego" (a cover) and ramona, isn't *that* good. i got it the first day since i was a huge fan, and after i gave it a listen i still tought i'd give him another shot, and TOTY was in fact awesome. which led me to buy all the other he made after.. big mistake..
It's all good. Cult of Ray is a great album also as is the Catholics work all the way to the Nashville soaked Honeycomb & the return to Black Francis with Bluefinger & now Grand Duchy. You reveal your own limitations of taste by your comments, nothing about the artist.
@geebeebee1 I actually discovered Frank Black and than the pixies, it was after a few songs something clicked he was the singer, the first Frank black song I heard was If it takes all night, I now own every CD and a few pixies as well.
... and softest neck where always do I lay my clumsy thoughts... Love him!

Excellent Frank Black songs for carmejp: Headache, Ten Percenter, I heard Ramona sing, Hang on to your ego, Czar, Los Angeles.
That is a small collection of greats. But man, there are more
Pixies MUSTS that you don't have in your list: U-Mass, Debaser, Gouge Away, Bone Machine, Dig For Fire, I've Been Tired, Caribou.
Everything they did.... EVERYTHING!

My Friend..you have nailed a perfect observation
on this greatest of recording...
Shakesperian in content, and modern in emotion..
much like, most great "Thinkers . and Purververorys of thought and Emotion "
Probably will not be reckgonized in OUR lifetime ..
And to that I say " We are ahead of the curve , in this vein of enjoyment '
And So I say unto ,, the Generations that follow..
" Without a great Woman , by my side ....I am nothing "
