  • Should have moved it, not demo'd it.

Some politician lined his pockets in the construction of the new center no doubt.

  • visiting the old VC was always the highlight of our trips to Gettysgurg. The new VC cant hold a candle to the old one. After going through the new one, I wouldnt pay a nickle to do it again. It was a very sad day for Gettysburg enthusiasts when the old Visitors Center closed

  • wow this is where i watched the tower come down from

  • I went to that visitor center many times as a kid. To me, it feels so weird to go to Gettysburg and not see it there.

And add me to the list of people who hated the new visitor center. The old one had a lot more character.

  • @supersaver87 I miss it, too. The new one is nice, but as you said, it doesn't have the "feel" of the old one. I went there from 1958 untill I was forced to move to Florida in 2007. It sucks here, and I can't wait to move back to Fairfield! I did CW reenacting for 38 years and can't wait to see that again!!!

  • I liked the old one but not in that spot but true it needed to be recycled, sell parts of it and raise money to help preserve more land. Also the new one, you now have to pay for all that new gadgetry. Sad day for history.

  • The lucky ones that got to see this building and share it with there family with out a cost. History should not have a price tag. (hint hint NPS)

  • So, why didn't anyone want to save the windows, doors, exit signs, wiring, display cases, glass, bricks and REYCLE them?

    Could we be more wasteful?

There are place that sell reycled building items like this stuff!!!

  • A lovely tribute for sure, but like watching an old man being killed. Painful but needed for closure. The ending delivers a message that must be the opposite of what was intended. The proud old VC replaced by a dreary and aloof documentary and antiseptic exhibits with zero character. In hindsight, a disastrous mistake. Reflects terribly on the NPS and the white elephant that is the new visitors center
