@ImaginedWriter It has to do principally with the military reforms of the roman armies whereby legions stopped being primarily composed of Italic soldiers, but became composed mainly of citizens of the Romanized regions. The weakened legions of limitanei weren't as strong as the legions of ancient Rome. The army became common. It didn't help that most claimants to the title of emperor were generals of these armies, thereby weakening the unity of the Empire further.
@ImaginedWriter The prosperity of Rome was fueled by its conquests, and therefore, by the spoils of war. When that stopped, Rome stagnated. There wee also several economic hyper-inflationary crises. People scraped silver off money, trying to cheat each other with "lighter" coins, but the practice obviously had side effects and the whole economic system almost collapsed. Justinian and several other emperors temporarily attempted to fix the empire's problems, but the causes were too deep.
@empyrionin In the end, the lack of conquests, the failing integrity of the empire, the divergence of its peoples, the military and administrative decentralization as well as the barbarian threat and the inability to cope with the changing times put a slow end to the Roman Empire.
@SonicNitro Do not mistake the Goths with the Getae, they were different peoples (Goths were of Germanic origin, Getae of Thracian stock). Many authors confuse them because of the similarity in name. The confusion has propagated throughout several decades of semi-academic writings.
Lol, German is a very wide term to use. Yes the goths and visigoths and ostrogoths were germanic but they are still different than each other in their migration routes around Europe.
The Battle of Adrianople (August 9, 378), sometimes known as the Battle of Hadrianopolis, was fought between a Roman army led by the Roman Emperor Valens and Gothic rebels (largely Thervings as well as Greutungs, non-Gothic Alans, and various local rebels) led by Fritigern.
The battle took place about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Adrianople (modern Edirne in European Turkey, near the border with Greece and Bulgaria) in the Roman province of Thracia and ended with an overwhelming victory for the Goths.
Part of the Gothic War (376–382), the battle is often considered the start of the final collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century. Adrianople actually was fought between the Goths and the Eastern Roman Empire, which ultimately withstood the Gothic invasions and developed into the Byzantine Empire.
@hankock1015 They came from vest and east gotaland in Sweden, driven out by other scandinavians from war and harsh climate. But they lived several places as they moved eastwords eventualy to todays romania then contact with east roman empire.
The Romans should have built them forts on the other side of the river, large enough to protect farm land. Then the Romans could extract gold and food later and have a valuable ally.
@MegaKossak its because its near the greek borders.andrianople was a greek city but turks changed the name.now the city's name is Edirne.Only the greeks call it still andrianoupole.google it
@william7476 Yes indeed. Too many people get confused bwtween Ostrogothic and Visigothic tribes. Either way, they all came from Gotland (island just south of Scandinavia).
@MJFAN666 Not exactly. Both tribes originated in Gotland (in Scandinavia) and migrated into central Europe, splitting into two main tribes - the Ostrogoths (in the East) and the Visigoths (in the West).
roman hadn't improve their military technology/equipment for nearly 500 years since hannibal's campaign. it would be no surprise roman would took down by another more advance warfare faction. barbarian may be savage but their are the first invented crossbow, chainmail, steel plet armor and steel sword/weaponry while roman were still used bronze armor/tin weaponry.
i dont think this guy knows whatthe fuck he is talking about. the huns DID NOT join german ranks, the germans were fleeing from being enslaved by the huns, alans were germanic tribes but the huns were not germans they were fucking mongolians. lol at this documentary
most of you here are game geeks, but actually i will tell you a little about the goths. the poor goths were the rags of the ancient world, everyone wiped their feet with them, they had to become soldiers to survive, they fought and they learned to fight friom the romans and ultinmately even today every german is a descendant of soldiers, that is why the main traits of germans are organization, dispicline and a respect for punctuality. these are genetic traits from their soldier ancestors
@wandarah its my theory, and i have never read it anywhere, but i feel it is correct. i spent alot of time in germany and i love the place. i love the history of germany and i empathize with the tragedy of this nation that has been allways vilified and under-apreciated.
@cryostation It says "United States" on your channel. This means you have abandoned your people and land, thus, not greek. Or you are just some greek man's son/daughter, so either way i really dont give a shit how much you love greece so you decided to leave it

The problem with this TV series is that it only focuses on ancient battles of Europe.

Scandinavians worked as mercinaries in the byzantine empire not aginst the empire. You can search up Varangian guards. It was the venetians who did most damage to byzantine from the west.
I'm sorry my friend, but Romans aren't representive for Europe. My country wasn't conquered at all (except the southern point).
And to make matters worst for you, you've been conquered by many nations over the years. What's left of Persia is Iran, a country led by a disillusioned dictator and a fundametalist psycho.
Time Commanders the best, have to say that Creative Assembley are the best at Total war games. Only the Brits can truthly do justice to the History channel!!

Wel at the time of the crusades there was no roman empire, the remnats of that empire was the east roman empire but that was to be called Byzantine and were mostly greec in culture. The roman empire fell with the western part by the hands of the goths.

That's not something to be proud of.
