  • I can't take these videos seriously because of the Rome total war videos.

  • How the hell do you go from the glory and might of Rome under Augustus to in 250yrs barbarism?

How? What happened to the great men of Rome?

  • @ImaginedWriter It has to do principally with the military reforms of the roman armies whereby legions stopped being primarily composed of Italic soldiers, but became composed mainly of citizens of the Romanized regions. The weakened legions of limitanei weren't as strong as the legions of ancient Rome. The army became common. It didn't help that most claimants to the title of emperor were generals of these armies, thereby weakening the unity of the Empire further.

  • @empyrionin What about the economic state of the empire and innovation? Did that become stagnant?

  • @ImaginedWriter The prosperity of Rome was fueled by its conquests, and therefore, by the spoils of war. When that stopped, Rome stagnated. There wee also several economic hyper-inflationary crises. People scraped silver off money, trying to cheat each other with "lighter" coins, but the practice obviously had side effects and the whole economic system almost collapsed. Justinian and several other emperors temporarily attempted to fix the empire's problems, but the causes were too deep.

  • @empyrionin In the end, the lack of conquests, the failing integrity of the empire, the divergence of its peoples, the military and administrative decentralization as well as the barbarian threat and the inability to cope with the changing times put a slow end to the Roman Empire.

  • Did the guy just say Scandinavia at2:57, the Goths were orginally from Dacia, thats like now Romania. I'm open to anyboby who thinks otherwise.

  • @SonicNitro the goths originally migrated from Scandinavia (its not clear where exactly) to Dacia.

  • @SonicNitro Do not mistake the Goths with the Getae, they were different peoples (Goths were of Germanic origin, Getae of Thracian stock). Many authors confuse them because of the similarity in name. The confusion has propagated throughout several decades of semi-academic writings.

  • @empyrionin Right that does make more sense now, thanks

  • What simulation game is that i gotta have it.

  • @ZackVandygriff Rome total war, this is the expansion Barbarian Invasion.

  • Don't you laugh when he says "now with new video game technology" :P

  • @TheDiego1255 it was new 7 years ago and its still awesome

  • Dam it!!! I want to play Rome total war now!!!

  • Rome total war was just that amazing

  • @Xdeser1 was? It still is.

  • Why where they using a mix of rtw units and rtw bi units??

  • Lol, German is a very wide term to use. Yes the goths and visigoths and ostrogoths were germanic but they are still different than each other in their migration routes around Europe.

  • Whe belgians , helpt you're germans

  • goth are germanic not scandanavian

  • @punisherot Scandinavians are Germanic.

  • The Battle of Adrianople (August 9, 378), sometimes known as the Battle of Hadrianopolis, was fought between a Roman army led by the Roman Emperor Valens and Gothic rebels (largely Thervings as well as Greutungs, non-Gothic Alans, and various local rebels) led by Fritigern.

  • The battle took place about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Adrianople (modern Edirne in European Turkey, near the border with Greece and Bulgaria) in the Roman province of Thracia and ended with an overwhelming victory for the Goths.

  • Part of the Gothic War (376–382), the battle is often considered the start of the final collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century. Adrianople actually was fought between the Goths and the Eastern Roman Empire, which ultimately withstood the Gothic invasions and developed into the Byzantine Empire.

  • Gotta love Rome: Total War.

They even use the music from it!!

  • watching this makes me wanna play rtw

  • hey they used rtw barbarion invasion

  • the total wars are so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lmao....5:54. Look at the roman soldiers fly from that charge by the goths.

  • Nasa said they wanted there computer back or their gunna tell there mom

  • Oh god this is hilarious

  • They should've done an episode on one of the battles of China's Warring States Era.

  • about time they use barbarian invasion for an episode.

  • How the Romans have gone from a world superpower to getting their butts kicked by "barbarians".

  • wth the goth had Spanish bull warrior! i thought they were Germanic!

  • @viet3211 the goths were thracians sort of. they lived in thrace, but were probably from germany.

  • @hankock1015 They came from vest and east gotaland in Sweden, driven out by other scandinavians from war and harsh climate. But they lived several places as they moved eastwords eventualy to todays romania then contact with east roman empire.

  • @hankock1015 oh really!?!?! damn!

  • The Romans should have built them forts on the other side of the river, large enough to protect farm land. Then the Romans could extract gold and food later and have a valuable ally.

  • "New Video Game Technology"......kinda funny how a few years on the new technology makes this look like Atari!

  • Are those guys morons!? Adrianople is in GREECE!

We even can see it in the image! 6.54

  • @MegaKossak actually in 300 AD it was in Thrace technically Greece or the Balkans but in modern times it is considered to be in turkey.

  • @Krazytaco9 Actually, no... turkey is only in Stanbul (Constantinople)

  • @MegaKossak heheh my bad, and isn't Rome near Beijing ? :3

  • @MegaKossak Its actually in eastern Thrace, which is in Turkey

  • @MegaKossak Edirne is in Turkey....moron...

  • @MegaKossak andrianople is in turkey now.near the greek borders

  • @extrememark13 But if so, WHY THE HELL IS IT IN GREECE IN THE IMAGE!?

  • @MegaKossak its because its near the greek borders.andrianople was a greek city but turks changed the name.now the city's name is Edirne.Only the greeks call it still andrianoupole.google it

  • i wish you could control that many units in the game.

  • @chocoman45 you can, just go to option and selected the unit size

  • They should do episodes in Japan using the Shogun 2 engine.

  • @JellyChilliMustard LOl yea

  • Wait wait.... They actually used Rome Total War and it's music as a simulator for battles on TV? :O!!!! :D!!!!

  • @Pl4rk There also was a BBC gameshow called 'Time Commanders', a series based around the Historic battles in the game.

  • i know that this is a modded version of Rome Total War and its Expansions, but which mod is it?

  • @bloodrage84 It is a custom mod made by the creators of the show.

  • ..." from the OSTROGOTHIC forces" . It is more precise to say Ostrogothic than German. That's what the tribe was called, people.

  • @celticbattleaxe Yeah, but the Ostrogoth, being a branch of the Goths are of Eastern Germanic origin.

  • @william7476 Yes indeed. Too many people get confused bwtween Ostrogothic and Visigothic tribes. Either way, they all came from Gotland (island just south of Scandinavia).

  • @celticbattleaxe Not Ostrogoths. JUST Gothsss. Look up "The Barbarians - Goths" You ll love the series -- from History Channel.

  • @MJFAN666 Not exactly. Both tribes originated in Gotland (in Scandinavia) and migrated into central Europe, splitting into two main tribes - the Ostrogoths (in the East) and the Visigoths (in the West).

I did see the episode though, :D. LOVED it!

  • @celticbattleaxe Woohoo! Did you see all of them?

  • @MJFAN666 I certainly did! All of the Barbarian episodes were too cool to miss! :D

  • @celticbattleaxe Lol i cant believe how much video games though me. i know the same thing. >:L

  • @sgtCbb Yep. And these guys are supposed to know that!

  • Comment removed

  • using BI Goth FTW

  • using BI

  • if they were from skandinavia, they would've brought shirts :P

  • The vanilla sucks in historical accuracy, but it is fun.

  • Love the background music. It's from Roem Total War isn't it?

  • Does anyone else notice the sound edit at 2:14-2:16

  • @5:54 First man to fly.

  • thanks man you are great that you record this! i watched already 3 battles :P

  • If only RTW could run smoothly for me with that many troops

  • this makes me wanna but RTW :D

  • When was this? I doesn't say in the description in this vid.

  • the barbarians are at the gates

  • they should make a medieval show like this, but using Medieval 2 total war

  • @Herpkid56 There weren't a lot of descisive battles in the medieval times, because armies often broke after heavy knights broke the line.

  • 5:50 those are Spanish units! Why not just use the actual Goth faction from the game to represent the Goths?

  • @saiyanprince09 because they dont use Barbarian Invasion but why dont they?

  • """""""New Video Game Technology"""""""" XD

  • roman hadn't improve their military technology/equipment for nearly 500 years since hannibal's campaign. it would be no surprise roman would took down by another more advance warfare faction. barbarian may be savage but their are the first invented crossbow, chainmail, steel plet armor and steel sword/weaponry while roman were still used bronze armor/tin weaponry.

  • does anyone know of that battle were these horse archers kept on circling a small group of romans who were in the tortiose formation.

  • @B3ASTxIFLU Battle of Carrhae?

  • OMG they made a series out of Rome: Total War......

  • @thatsMrSmileytoyou I'm waiting for them to use Medieval 2 total war...

  • I love how they used Rome Total War. One of the best computer games ever.

  • @JimmySteller TRUE!)))

  • @JimmySteller Wait until you see them use Rome 2 Total War :) :)

  • @JimmySteller i agree so much i will thumbs up you

  • @JimmySteller idk why they didnt keep going or start the series back up with each game... especially with medieval or napoleon total war...

  • @JimmySteller most realistic strategy game ever!!!

  • CHECK OUT MY CHANNEL!!

  • i dont think this guy knows whatthe fuck he is talking about. the huns DID NOT join german ranks, the germans were fleeing from being enslaved by the huns, alans were germanic tribes but the huns were not germans they were fucking mongolians. lol at this documentary

  • @cryostation You are partly right.

The nomadic element in gothic body were Alans - who were iranian tribe, not Huns.

  • @OkurkaBinLadin yes are right alans were iranian, and all of us europeans were at one point bin iran

  • most of you here are game geeks, but actually i will tell you a little about the goths. the poor goths were the rags of the ancient world, everyone wiped their feet with them, they had to become soldiers to survive, they fought and they learned to fight friom the romans and ultinmately even today every german is a descendant of soldiers, that is why the main traits of germans are organization, dispicline and a respect for punctuality. these are genetic traits from their soldier ancestors

  • @cryostation

    ah yes, the punctual gene.

  • @wandarah its my theory, and i have never read it anywhere, but i feel it is correct. i spent alot of time in germany and i love the place. i love the history of germany and i empathize with the tragedy of this nation that has been allways vilified and under-apreciated.

  • @cryostation perhaps you have inherited the 'whacky theory' gene.

  • @wandarah im not german. i have nothing to do with them genetically. however may i suggest that you be a product of incestuous mental defectives.

  • @cryostation you may.

  • @cryostation you cultureless yankees admire everything

  • @Pawnbroker00 nice assumption. not a yankee actually im greek. thousands of years of history. now shut the fuck up before you get owned.

  • @cryostation It says "United States" on your channel. This means you have abandoned your people and land, thus, not greek. Or you are just some greek man's son/daughter, so either way i really dont give a shit how much you love greece so you decided to leave it

  • @Pawnbroker00 i was born in greece loser. both parents are greek. so what am i you tell me? i was 5 yrs old when i came to usa. you should ask my parents about that. i didnt really have a choice. greece i like much better, and actually im moving there. youre a pawn go fuck off

  • @Pawnbroker00im a yankee and i dont care if im cultureless so u just got pwned

  • no chineas expansion dude :/ at least to my knowing

  • they should modernized rome total war

  • They are working on RTW 2.

  • @GamerDudester other people are saying they are making WW1 or WW2 Total War, but i don't know

  • Lol. Give me one source that states any RTW team member saying they will be making a WWI or WWII game.

  • @GamerDudester I said I don't know, its just people think its going to be that

  • @greenydude014 i wish they would :P i need new strategy games and total war series is my favorite

  • Lupisus or something like that is an idiot

  • Rome Total War! Damn that was a good game. Still my favorite of the Total Wars.

  • Yes, although it is basically on the edge of Turkey.

  • New Video Game Technology?

  • @ThyFry , this series are from 2003 or something, so it isn't exactly new anymore =)

  • I know, i was just trying to make a joke

  • @ThyFry , you never know lol

  • This was in like 2004

  • its old lol

  • @ThyFry this was made in like 1998

  • @nounever I know, I was making a joke.

  • @ThyFry in 2003 it was new.

  • @PMAN46 I know I was just making a joke.

  • @ThyFry this show was made shortly after rome total war so they say new

  • @ThyFry = you ever think the TV show was made 7 years ago. Or did that escape your intelligence?

  • Comment removed

  • @Scurge237 Yet again, I was making a joke.

  • Comment removed

  • @Scurge237 ops, sorry about that.

  • @ThyFry It was at the time. :P

  • @ThyFry retard it was made when rome total war came out

  • @ThyFry hey 7 years ago it was new. XD

  • By this time, the legions of Rome were in such a state that they were a shadow of their former selves. The stalwart self sacrifice of the Republic and the iron strength of the Empire was in the distant past. It also seems that their managerial skills were in decline.

  • in the Roman Empire map, it wasn't that big at that time, for one, they pulled out of Britain before Adrianople

  • i was impress of the many soldiers that they can created.

  • They're getting much better too.

Hopefully with the newest Total War they can do a similar series for the napoleonic ages. Naval Battles too!

Or alternatively, they could use MASSIVE technology, although that is prerendering technology, not real-time rendering.

  • Yeah and the goths originated from scandinavia as the lombards, jutes, angels and Vikings. And before them all the germanic tribes. The goths came from Gøtaland and gotland in Sweden.

  • One Scandinavian tribe defeting and killing the east roman empire in this battle and later wenturing west taking the west roman empire is pretty impressive if you ask me.

But you are right one one thing, if the romans never had tried to enslave the goths then they wuld probably not feel the wrath of the norsemen.

  • hahaha, best documentary i've ever seen...

  • that guy is really dramatic lol

  • haha yeah so funny

    its a awesome game tho

  • lol those computer images is just a game rome totla war

  • yeah, those computer images are just rtw bi

  • Rome came out victorious though and some emperors before the the later Romans (after 337) were victorious. Some were Marcus Aurelius,

Caesar Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus, or in English Constantine the Great and Trajan.

  • Roman empire did a mistake by attackin Parthia.

  • Well be proud of it.

And it took only 1500 years to take out the Empire.

  • No it weren't the Sassanids.

It were the Germans who destroyed the Western Roman Empire.

And it were the Turks who destroyed the Eastern Roman Empire, but only after about 200 years of war.

  • It was the Romans that destroyed their own Empire. The Turks and Germans simply gathered the pieces

  • It might look like they killed their own empire, but if we take in to consideration that everyone have to eat and at the time North Africa where the backyard where grew most of the grain and produce needed to feed Rome, now enter the Vandals, these landed right in said backyard, a spectacular maneuver,, everything Rome needed to survive prosper or to remain strong was cut off as the Vandals founded their North African kingdom,, for me that was a pivotal moment.

  • simply gathered the pieces, better read up on the battles. At the hight of the roman empire Agustus lost many ligions to the germanic tribes. Ligions never again recovered and romans expantion halted and then the romans were on the defence. When the goths from scandinavia wenturing into the empire they both defeted the east roman armies(Adrinopel) killing the emperor, and the western ones. Don`t tell me they yust gathered up the pieces.

  • I mean the later timeline of the empire mate. Turks and Germans (meaning Franks, my mistake, I meant the 4th Crusade) basically conquered an already spent force. At the early time the legions were in rapid decline and it was the modernisation under the later Emperors that allowed the Empire to survive the state of constant war that it was in.

  • Wel at the time of the crusades there was no roman empire, the remnats of that empire was the east roman empire but that was to be called Byzantine and were mostly greec in culture. The roman empire fell with the western part by the hands of the goths.

Scandinavians worked as mercinaries in the byzantine empire not aginst the empire. You can search up Varangian guards. It was the venetians who did most damage to byzantine from the west.

  • yes

  • I'm sorry my friend, but Romans aren't representive for Europe. My country wasn't conquered at all (except the southern point).

And to make matters worst for you, you've been conquered by many nations over the years. What's left of Persia is Iran, a country led by a disillusioned dictator and a fundametalist psycho.

That's not something to be proud of.

  • sorry mate but much of Holland was conquered

  • And reconquered, only during the French Revolution and WOII was our country completly captured.

During the 80-years war my city was the first city to repel the Spaniards.

  • which country germany

  • No, The Netherlands

  • no the franks conquered you the Holy Roman empire conquered you

  • Well, that was before we were a solid state.

It''s easy to conquer farmers and other simple people.

  • .... dude relax... ur sounding as extremist and racist as many americans.... chill

  • Time Commanders the best, have to say that Creative Assembley are the best at Total war games. Only the Brits can truthly do justice to the History channel!!
