  • The words of Te Rauparaha's haka (1810) used by the All Blacks: Ka mate, ka mate Ka ora, ka ora Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru Nana i tiki mai whakawhiti te ra Upane, upane Upane kaupane Whiti te ra. These words are translated as: It is death, it is death It is life, it is life This is the hairy man Who caused the sun to shine again for me Up the ladder, up the ladder Up to the top The sun shines. (Scarey? Yeah, right!)
  • Blinded by the sun, he thought he was about to be killed, but when his sight cleared he saw the hairy legs of the local chief who had let him hide in the pit.

Te Rauparaha then jumped out of the pit and was so happy at being alive that he performed this haka on the spot.

  • Know what the maori words actually mean?

The story behind the haka is that Te Rauparaha was being chased by an enemy tribe. He hid in a kumara (sweet potato) pit and waited in the dark

for the other tribe to find him or to pass by.

He heard sounds above and the top of the pit was opened.

  • Some of these have "add-ons" to the original Maori haka from the chief Te Raupaha (1810).

The rugby teams are so unfit they aren't even the maori words accurately, even leaving lines incomplete.

  • or the white guys could just be New Zealanders supporting their country?

  • i ama rugby player and when i watch the haka its pumps me up for the rugby game

  • kapo o pango rules

  • hell yeh!!!

  • markymark1...thats typical of NZ....maori culture embraced by everyone...

  • Do not understand why the white guys are doing the haka? they are NOT Maori!!!! idiots

  • @markyemark1 Isnt that a little racist? I admit that haka looks better when its lead by one of the Maori players but its been a long standing allblacks tradition for decades- just because some players arent the right skin colour shouldnt mean they have no right to participate =S

  • @Psycholosophere Listen hear you cunt. Im not fucking racist just because i hate dirty niggers, it means your a little bitch. I bet your dad used to come into your room at night when you were trying to sleep and say 'bite the pillow son...Im coming in dry.' You go on about tradition but the only tradition in your family is making the bitch whore of a son choke on his dads cock. I bet you like it deep down dont you? You make me sick you dirty little freak.

I hope your infertile. OK. GET IT.

  • @markyemark1 LOL your comment cracked me up! That was far to try hard to ever be insulting.... stop trolling, go outside and get yourself a real hobby- you might even make some friends!

  • @markyemark1 How about they are representing their country and you never know... they could have Maori ancestors!!!

  • @markyemark1 All I can say to your comment is you obviously have never been to NZ, I know several Pakeha with the skin colour of Maori and several Maori with the skin colour of Pakeha's. Few NZ families could claim to be 100% of either race and that's the way we like it here.

  • @markyemark1 they could b Maori, my cousins are half Maori and they look really white, but the white guys could b doing it 2 support the team

  • if i was in the other team i would say

sorry guys but i don't wanna die yet so i'm out. XD

  • wow, im in love with maoris, oh man look at there sexy stocky body and they are so manly!!!!! i want little maori children!!

  • do these all blacks win alot??...because i love the haka but if u get ur ass kicked afta it doesnt make alot of sense lmao like if the lions did it then lost by 20...

  • @BulletBxBaby The All Blacks generally kick ass!! :D We only lost one game last season and that was only after a bit of Aussie brilliance in the dying minutes of the game. They got a try to even the scores and then their bloke kicked the conversion so they won by two points.

  • correction the other pacific countries did not steal the "haka" because we have always had in our customs and plus maoris are polynesians as well so nothing special really just that the pacific islands including the maoris do a warrior dance........ so please dont bots

  • This particular haka that the all blacks use has such a distinctive meaning. It's all about two people who saved another by rather unconventional means, Te Rauparaha (the one being saved) is talking about how he was facing down certain death but that he knew he wasn't going to die. The literal translation conveys none of this. However, the meaning behind it and the reason it was composed in the first place makes it perfect for declaring before going into battle.

  • The haka is just over used now days. It used to be a great symbol with the All Blacks but now you see it performed at every event by teams and cround which is just killing it

  • most favourite was definitely the Tana Umaga haka. he looks the most vicious and violent of the lot. you need killer instinct to make it look ruthless.

  • Wow NZ rocks!

  • worst vid ever..

  • Awesome !!! Puts the chills up anyone spine at who every challenges us :

  • this is the best haka!!!

  • YAY! NZ All Blacks! ! ! <3

  • I used to be embarrassed when I saw this performed, I thought the opposing team must think we are freaks, now that im older and wiser, I know that the opposing teams would have recognised it for what it was, a traditional war /battle dance from our country and would have respected it as much as we would respect any of their traditions .

And now, its my favourite part of watching rugby

  • sorry is it just me but from 2:46 can anyone else hear some next level japense cartoon in the background?

  • What happened to the audio when Tana was leading the haka?

    Great video!! Made me homesick!!!!

    I LOVE NEW ZEALAND!!! :D

  • I think 7:00 is the best

  • The french should do a ballet before the game too.

  • LMFAO!

  • guys...can you please explain more of Haka?..

  • just look up "haka explained" on youtube

  • its a mauri tribal dance, designed to intimidate, which was traditionally done before battle. occasionally it is performed for visitors in the airport in NZ.

  • brilliant input.

  • so? i doubt any other (rugby players) we're that intimidated by it in the first place. its just a tradition.

  • @wiggawithattitude its spelt " Maori" bro

  • aye my bad, typo.

  • @tutawhio aye my bad, typo haha

  • @wiggawithattitude it's spelt Maori not mauri lol

  • @wiggawithattitude Mauri? Maori bro. Mauri means spirit.

  • @wiggawithattitude ohhh u read the welcome to NZ pamphlet. well done ball bags

  • @wiggawithattitude yeah it goes 'listen with your ears, prepare youself, prepare yourself, hands on hips bend knees, slap your hands on your thighs and stomp as hard as you can, as hard as you can, i live, i live, i die, i die, this is the hairy man who fetched the sun and caused it to shine again, one upward step, another upward step, an upward step, another... the sun shines! dawn/rise!'

  • @wiggawithattitude you mean, Maori War Dance. You explained it right, it was to intimidate our enemies when we were defending our country against the western white people back in the days -- ah well.

It's kinda lost it's meaning nowadays with other nationalities doing it as well.

It's a sacred (tapu).. Kiwi's are fine, but psht. I don't mean to be racist, but you should know what I mean eh.

    I'm a proud maori =p

  • @wiggawithattitude Its Maori... not mauri...

  • @wiggawithattitude you spelt maori wrong

  • @wiggawithattitude nice copy and paste from google you did there
