This is very simple : the producers of 300 considered the whole "300 style" (CGI backgrounds, etc) hade a lot more to give (that is : to make more money). They called a couple of good directors to direct 300 - 2 who told them to piss off.

Then they got a cheap director, to make a cheap movie to make some profit.

Visually very attractive, but absolutely nothing else.
