  • How big is your tank? and are the smaller two sharks the Papuan Epaulettes? It is a very nice tank. I wish that I could have a tank like yours someday

  • About how deep is the deepest part of the tank? Thanks!

  • Okay question time, lol! When I went to SeaWorld in June, they had these sharks for us to pet lying in a shallow tank and I thought they were the most adorable things ever. Now I know they can cost upwards of like $600 right? How much would I be looking at for I'm guessing a 180 gallon tank for one shark full grown? Unless I can house 2 in that enclosure? My question is mainly, where can I find how to setup an enclosure, and how to maintain them and such, as I'm no expert to this, but I want one.

  • Thanks!

  • I would set up a saltwater tank for a couple of years min before attempting a shark tank. There is a lot to learn and I would suggest common fish to start off. You are looking at several thousand for a setup and I would go larger then 300 gallons for an adult. Check out our website and forum with a ton of shark keeping info. The link is on my youtube home page. I can't post a link here

  • have yours ever bred? I am researhcing about these sharks and am interseted in breeding. I read that the male can be very aggresive to the females and other species of sharks in the aquarium.

  • I will let you know if you show me an appropriate setup for them.

  • what are the dimensions of the aquarium?

  • If I remember right it is just over 8' by 4'. The depth varies- shallower on the right deep on the left. The tank also gets more narrow towards the left side to access the door. It was customised for the room.

  • Nice Setup Crumbeyeolo. How Big Tank they need??? i was planning to Buy this Shark.

  • Hello, thanks for the comment. Do you know what species of Epaulette you were thinking of keeping? The most commonly available one from your region is Hemiscyllium ocellatum which attains a length of up to 42". I would recommend a pond that is 10' x 5' for them. You should check out or site sharkraycentral(DOT)com for further care requirement and species profiles. Feel free to ask any other questions

  • thanks for reply. I have Monodactylus argenteus fish Now in my tropical tank. can i put them in salt water tank??? because aquarium Guy told me if i but bit salt everyday for 3 week in tank then later i can put them in salt water Tank..

  • They are found in freshwater, brackish and marine water so it could potentially work but you do not know the specific distribution of these fish so they may not be used to marine water from their region. I would trade them in before attempting to acclimate them personally.

  • in this size. how many sharks can i Put? Can I put bamboo shark is well with Hemiscyllium ocellatum ?

  • Why not get a pair of Epaulettes and try to breed them? That would be alot more rewarding and sustainable. I dont see any problem keeping the two species together other then their tank size needs.

  • cool. you said it was a do it your self. how did u build it

  • 2x6, plywood, fiberglass and the final coat was a rubber paint.

I did a thread on the build on our site sharkraycentral(DOT)com if you are interested

  • wow... at first I only saw 2 sharks.. than BANG like 5 come out from hiding! awesome

  • Weekly backflushing on the sand filter. Siphoning every 2-3 weeks.

Mangroves get T5 lighting and ro water sprayed regularly on the leaves. I have seen the Speckled Epaulettes available only once in my life the PNG are available regularly now. Mazuri(DOT)com shark pills are impaled into shrimp or squid each feeding.

  • there are links to my site and group on my home page. I can not post a link here for some stupid reason

  • Are you feeding your sharks too much? Are they fat or skinny? Very well fed sharks are not as active and lazy.

Are there vibrations, electrical devices omitting emf's, excessive noise in the tank? Is the tank big enough? Water quality? Stressors such as aggressive fish, lack of hiding spaces, too bright of light and not enough shade. Enough oxygen in the water? Temp. Illness. These are all factors to think about that could result in lack of activity.

  • If your sharks are not excited at feeding time there is a problem and you need to find it.

  • The Speckled Epaulettes are about two feet. The PNG are 16" possibly. I feed them two or three times a week. I dont want them to get too fat and lazy. ha

  • Can u feed them shark formula??

  • Ocean Nutrition makes a great frozen shark food that I would recommend mixing into thier diet. Not all of my shark will eat it though. I prefer frozen food as apposed to fresh to avoid bacteria and parasite transfer. Their diet includes various marine fish, squid, scallops, octopus, shrimp occasionally muscles and eel. I also supplement with Mazuri shark vitamins at every feeding.

  • The tank is 8' by 4'

  • If not, what catshark is the smallest that might do allright in a 180 gallon?

  • One of the smaller catsharks that is available is the Australian Marbled Catshark (Atelomycterus macleayi) which I think would do best in a 180 given swimming space is maximized and it is a long 180 and not tall.

Other smaller Sharks include the Indonesian Bamboo Shark (Chiloscyllium hasseltii) commonly sold as a Zebra Shark and Arabian Bamboo (Chiloscyllium arabicum). The Papauan gets a little bigger then the above so I would go with one of them or try to stretch the tank a little bigger.

  • Would one of the Papauan epaulettes do well in a 180 gallon bowfront if it had the whole tank to itself? (Except for a lionfish that is in there right now)
