  • how come there isn't any magic box for ground units?

  • @startingsprinter

The only reason we have to magic box air units is because they have no collisions in place, where as ground units do...

Thats why ground units cant clump up the way air units can.

If air units had collision, a simple a-move would effectively be a magic box.

  • Nice video, but method #2 is actually better then method #3. It's better to move your mutas over, then press S (to stop them), and THEN focus-fire the thors, rather then just moving them over and stopping them :D

    THUMBS UP so people see.

  • @qwas12348gr5 He -says- that method 2 is the best. Derp? 2:06 and learn about it. Unless you're counting the first one where he just picks one and autoattacks it as a version of the magic box. Which it isn't.

  • `....they have to be inside of eachother.....`

  • @SCproductions12 That's what she said :D

  • this doesnt work so well now due to the patch

  • This explains why it worked a couple times for me but not other times. Thanks for the info!

  • What if Psy Made two controls group with 12 mutas each , magic box both and fly in and stop over the thors at the same time with good micro while doing this,Maybe he would come out without a single LOSS??

  • @slimjimo10 He didn't say terran was underpowered., but it is stupid that there is no counter to muta/baneling.

  • @Niklasdiver123 seigetank viking, vikings soft counter mutas and can't be hurt by banes, and seige tanks hard counter banelings, 10 seige tanks will kill an army of banelings in seconds (army being around 100 of them) they need to reasearch upgrades, speed and creep to be effective.

  • @IceHarmony You're right about the siege tanks canceling out the Banelings but not about the Mutas the Zerg plyaer (With good Macro) Will have tons and Mutalisks and will wreck the Vikings even if yo don't have a lot Mutas are the counter to vikings considering they can get up close quickly with their movement speed and hit 3 at a time. : /

  • @IceHarmony

Vikings do not counter mutas. It's the other way around.

I suppose the counter to muta - baneling would be marine - siege tank.

  • @Trias88 they don't always counter, but if you invest enough, they can equalize with mutas without being effected by banelings, better than having a horde of marines being steam rolled by banes, sieges harm the marines too, vikings basically are not as good, but less goes wrong. better still, if you do live, you can harass the zerg after with the vikings. I really don't know how good they are, im zerg not a terran player, but that my view anyway.

  • @IceHarmony

Well, I have watched quite a few Starcraft casts with pro games and I can't say I remember vikings being used against mutas (or even for sniping overlords - in TvZ they are only used against broodlords, I guess) in any of them. Typically Terran players counter mutas with marines in early-mid game and thors late.

  • @Trias88 Getting one viking instead of one medivac once you get reactor up is pretty good, as you will remove a lot of map controll and just be general annoying to the zerg

  • thors and archon are the only 2 units that can do splash damage to air, magic box seems to work against thors very nice (as u said they take no splash then) but it seems to NOT work against archon :/ i tried to use magic box against them but they still take splash damage,, and beside even if thors seems worthless against mutas with magic box, they still counter them cuz of their range of 10!, beside in late game, marines/thors can be common use.

  • This is a really nice vid, and with some micro, you wont lose one Muatkisk^^

  • I saw this video when I first started playing SC2, and it didn't mean much to me. Now that I'm actually decent I'm so happy it exists. :)

  • there is no possible way mech can beat zerg. thors are absolutely terrible against mutas when zergs know how to magic box

  • @redryan20000 True Mutalisks are overpowered no other way of explaining it, the magic box just made them fucked up strong.

  • @COldfusionstorm Mutalisks op? ya sure, shame that you have to tech up from tier 1 to hard counter them. oh wait.

  • @Saukkomestari Thors sucks VS Mutas, The Cost of a Thor alone should prove this, Just Build roaches, Mutas, Harass forever. If the terran builds turrets good kill something elles in his base, he built turrets around the entire base?, good he jus committed 750 minerals in static non moving defenses did he also built thors`?, Great, he now have a shit small army, and you should be able to just steamroll him.

  • @redryan20000 the point is, if a zerg goes mutas against a meching player, he cant defend his drones, and when he finally killed all tanks thors and helions(takes a long long time) the T has a shit load of rines, thors and turrets. mutas isnt how you deal with mech. but magic boxing learns you how to deal with a T who defends his base with only thors or who suddenly transitions into mass thor.

  • Mutas - The counter to thors.

  • @peAkkkTF2 marines - the counter to everything

  • @slimjimo10

    Lol bronze leauge troll.

  • @slimjimo10 banes, the counter to marines and thors

  • @redryan20000 part 1, joke

part 2, banes don't counter thors lol...

21 banelings to kill 1 thor

    50/25 per baneling

    75x21 = 1575

    1 thor - 300/200

    300+200 = 500

    you = dumb

  • @slimjimo10 ok..lings counter thors easy banes counter marines, mutas counter tanks. nothing terran can do to win

  • @redryan20000 so you're saying terran is underpowered?

    if you answered yes:

gtfo the internet, you're obviously retarded or a troll

    if you answered no:

    then make sense please

  • @redryan20000 part 1, joke

part 2, banes don't counter thors lol...

21 banelings to kill 1 thor

    50/25 per baneling

    75x21 = 1575

    1 thor - 300/200

    300+200 = 500

  • @redryan20000 loving all teh bronzy trolls, and al the whiners lol

  • Actually, not focus firing thors is better only in very large numbers. When you don't focus fire mutas will shoot the thor that is closest to them, focus-firing makes a big difference when you have smaller nubmers, I found that one of the best ways to go about this is to send your mutas right next to the thor closest to you (so the will all shoot that one) and the focuse firing the others.

  • christ, i lost a game cuz the guy massed thors, if i had this technique i probably would have won -.-

  • This is ridiculous. I think this is a bug in the game, and really needs to be fixed. Splash damage is a fundamental mechanic in the game, and to avoid it you need ridiculous micro. Air units, on the other hand, are apparently completely exempt from this. All you have to do is click, and the game does the micro for you.

Why don't we have a "magic box" for zerglings against tanks/colossi, or for marines against banelings/colossi?

    This must be a bug.

  • @TheDestroyerCrom No it isn't. I think it has always been like that from Brood War.

Blizzard theirselves mentioned this tactic in one of their polls, so, no, I don't think this is a "bug".

  • WOAH aug 20th!! this was realeased on my bday 1 year ago

  • :D usually i bunch up my mutas so no one can tell exactly how many i have and then when i get over something it goes splat, but now im going to do this just incase haha

  • Was this patched? Or have I not worked with thors enough to know their AA does area damage O.o

  • Damn I didn't know that thor has splash damge..that's why my a clump of fiity mutas were killed at one shot..

  • thannks man i could never beat those dman thors b4 this <3

  • wtf, thor= expensive and worthless now

BC= way way way to expensive, to slow and no splash and upgrades cost a billion???

after 30 minutes in the game you are pretty much fucked again zerg and youll only win against protoss if you have mmm AND vikings AND some ghosts for emp... ridiculous.

off course terran is gonna rush

  • @jeffsstt What about the fact that BCs are near invincible without proper enemy micro? What about the fact that Thors can still tank damage and deal heavy against enemy units with splash? With drops, tank micro, and repairs, Terran are amazing mid-late game.

  • @jeffsstt zerg pretty much auto wins past 30mins since terran has no effective late game units =/ i mean all we had was the thor but now that seems easily countered by mutas, and BCs take way too long to get out, and just as long to get into the battle =/

  • @XxAngelShinn Uhm, what? Zerg tend to win past 30 minutes because that means they've been econing for 30 minutes, and zerg econ better. Simple builds like hellion-tank-ghost, with a bit of air support against the zerg air, wreck the usual zerg endgame if your micro is good (hellions in front handle lings, tanks kill the other ground units, ghosts EMP infestors before they can do shit and snipe away overseers so they don't get killed.)

And even with this, mutas lose to thors, just not as bad.

  • @jeffsstt

I also love how when a worker is fixing a thor it has the same threat level as the thor so it goes down even faster now

  • do mutas auto attack thors or marines? when u try to magic box it

  • Thors nothing but a walking disaster specialy since energy is back, I used that 250 MM spell when it was energy free but with Time limit, now it's just a free HT kill since no one ever use it's spell, and always wait for it to be a deadly Ball free 250 Dmg just for 50 Energy gg blizzard...

  • @Terrantje If you think Thors aren't good when well utilized you're doing something wrong.

  • @Terrantje awww you mad nooby terran bro?

  • @99adgil fail nooby yet terrans dominate the gm ladder

  • Are antiair rockets doing splash too ?

  • eh, i rarely go thors anyways

  • Omg!! Thank you, now i will enter masters league. Your sir, are Gosu!

  • I lost a game I had won. I had like 40 muta 100 ling and they had nothing and i lost a group of 30 muta to 2 thors cos I misclicked

  • @AEgamesFtw You have my sympathy.

  • @xKanden15x it was painful

  • I like how in the suggestions is all starcraft, then randomly "fitness - cardio strength workout" and has a chick with big tits. Your not clicking it because you care about fitness, are you, starcraft player?

  • @ShvenWonk I don't appreciate your cynicism, it's important to keep in shape! boobs.

  • @ShvenWonk Now there's a also the "Worst Nipple Piercing Reaction Ever" vid, which seems to be in the suggestions for every vid nowadays. lol

  • does this work on missile turrets?

  • @MELTYblood8 turrets has no splash

  • @MELTYblood8 Missle turrets don't do splash damage.

  • nice vid, thank you

  • so how do you counter the magic box without marines?

  • @BIAXlD3NT why not MAKE marines? they own the most things, especially mutas and lings :)

  • zerg is op

  • terronz OP!!!11!1!11!

  • whoever wasnt already doing this is retarded.

  • @Coople

I got the game a week ago. Sorry if I can't learn all these tricks in a week.

  • @xDemonJohn

WHAT TRICK?! a bunch of units clumped together are going to be FUCKED by anything with splash....so dont clump them....its common sense...

  • @Coople

Still, you have to know how to keep them from clumping.

  • @xDemonJohn

well i am glad you gave the game more than a week before you rage/quitted and started looking for videos on how to keep mutalisks alive....oh wait...

  • @Coople

And you assume that I was actively looking for this why? I never said that, did I?

  • @Coople oopz/ I didn't know.

  • gooooooddd explanation....

  • Damm thanks man this really helps out :)

  • I wish this video was never released...

  • @insight1337 lol umad cos you gettin raped

  • @Flamez2k10 I don't play starcraft that'smuch to say that this crap is OP and that is UP. But mutas are having a way too easy life in ZvT.

  • @insight1337 it's not the problem that he shows how to counter thors and making them nothing but walking Scrapmetal.. the real problem is it's Splash Radius is to small and it's to slow, besides that once there's ground and air the thor will stop firing at anything and takes untill dying time to realise what to fire at a Zergling or a mutalisk.. or a medivac which it still seems to prefer even after patch

  • @Terrantje they should make the thors like Warcraft:FT siege engines. Those things could shoot 3 rockets at 3 different airborne targets. This will certainly be better than gimmicky splash.

  • @insight1337 Umad terran :(

  • @insight1337 I know, right? The thor would have got so nerfed if nobody knew about this.

  • Thors cost 6 food each and mutas cost 2 food. So you are doing 48 food verses 24 food, hardly a fair fight.

  • @98smithg read description moron.

  • @98smithg How often do you actually have about 8 thors ready to attack 24 muta?

  • got 2 answers to mutas besides marines

    1-Hunter Seekers

    2-Battle Cruisers

  • Hey guys, check out my channel for SC2 gameplay and commentary, including my upcoming series "DeNieeeD's SC2 Return!". First season Diamond ranked 1st in my league when I played, so hopefully I can get to that stage of play again!

  • omg son ur AMAZIIIIIING! :D

  • oh gawd, you make me feel noob :(

  • IF U TAKE EVEN COSTS OF EACH UNIT THE THORS WILL RAPE THE MUTAS OMFG THIS TACTIC IS DUMB.

  • if u were starcraft 1 player...than u could just master mutalisk spread control that is commonly used against countering corsairs and vessel...

  • @BboyByungGyu Screw corsairs......

  • only thing is that if the thors spread outside of bounce range it increases effectiveness as well.

  • @uriel005 most terran compositions vs zerg have siege tanks that your mutas should be focus firing. By using this technique your mutas can last long enough to take them out and your army can sweep up the rest. Thors die fast to hydras, roachs, and zerglings. Mass banelings against a Terran player with no siege tanks? gg.

  • :) /watch?v=k2IpG5pyND8

  • aww i wanted to see you clump up all the mutas and run them in for the last one :(

  • yeaaaaaaaaaaahhhh thank you so much. time to consume, infest, and assimilate

  • god you sound so much different back then

  • "They basically have to be inside each other to take extra damage." :/

  • As a new player to both Starcraft 2 and the Zerg race, I found this very informative, thanks!

  • Legendary!

  • so simple yet so effective, its surprising how many people dont know it

  • sorry but this is just op

  • I understand what magic box is, how it works. The thing I don't understand is why is the box "Magic"? What's so magic about selecting rectangle?

  • @Tyfyh

    Simple: "Eet hes awesum sauwce!""

  • awesome.

  • how do you make those mutas against those thors like that? costom game? how?

  • @1998umit Map editor

  • Thanks for sharing :) Will greatly help out my mid-late game as zerg!

  • Why "Stop" and not hold position? Doesn't "Stop" reset the cooldown?

  • @ExcalibursinX what cooldown? Like attack cooldown? If so they haven't attacked yet so it doesn't matter, i think stops better coz if a muta is out of range it will move a little and attack i think thats better than not attack at all even if they may get splash

  • @Darforl Yes. Attack Cooldown. Stop used to reset the cooldown, so you'd hafta wait a full cooldown cycle before attacking again. It doesn't now. You know, like how as soon as a unit gets in range of siege tank it'll shoot. Then you hafta wait 3 seconds before shooting again. It doesn't have it so it sees an enemy, waits 3 seconds and then shoots, which is what would happen if you reset the cooldown.

  • @ExcalibursinX okey!

  • How do you controll the enemies? PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME.

  • @conradhall1972 You don't, you abuse the enemy ai, and splash etc...

  • @Holyhetero WHat about on his tips and tricks videos?

  • @conradhall1972 I don't think he did, as far as i can tell he just ran close enough to get shot, or shoot at the thors.

  • @Holyhetero Not on this!!! On his tricks and tip videos 1, 2, and 3. Just look up : "starcraft 2 tips and tricks" and pick the one that is Psy's. Now how does he controll them on that?

  • @conradhall1972

    I see what you mean...

Okay as far as i can tell, in the first video everything belongs to him, i think that all the units technically belong to him, or something like that, and i didn't get to the third. So most likely as you said, some kind of trigger built to let you have it.

  • good thing about this video, no protoss whiners

  • @xDyonx its how to make most oout of your units idiot

  • Verry good info for begining players yes i know its ovius for some more better players but evrybody needs too start somwere

  • they can just use some kind of bomb and slay them all in 1 hit

  • 24 mutas can take out 7-8 thors.

  • @huskysglare1 8 thors beat 24 mutalisks if the mutalisks magic box and the thors are spread out.

  • terran go mm or mmm anymore solution bane roachs

  • I know this is probably a dumb question, but would this mechanic work the same way with say banshees or any other air unit?

  • @TheCarrShow Banshees can only attack ground, remember. But this tactic should work for anything that does splash damage to air.

  • @Azurite22 i was speaking more in the sense of asking if the splash damage is nullified the same way when using banshees

  • @TheCarrShow I think that it works the same since the hold command is the same for everything, it just stops movement and avoids clump. So yeah should work just the same but you should make a map and test it.

  • @TheCarrShow with v rays and banshees yes but proly won be as effective since there not as fast

  • what if you just press hold position and then focus fire? plz thumbs up so Psy can see

  • my girl magic boxed me

  • Thanks this video helped me a lot =)

    GG PsyStarcraft !

  • Cheers helped me a lot!

  • merines counter every shit magicbox terran is imbalanced and ZvT is micro intensive

    fucking terran imbalanced

  • @OnliDM all you need if they have marine thor group is create banes this will own the marines and the thors will be cleaned up by your thors

  • @OnliDM how did JULYzerg beat the best terran in the world MVP then... yea terran's probably OP

  • @OnliDM no, you probably just fail with Zerg and dont macro enough, or start with roach and lings and dont change your units, the bitch about why you lost to tanks+thors with lings+roaches.

  • i love the textbox on the video. the "troll" is saying the same exact thing as OP: that thors will rape mutas, and OP says the same exact thing, that mutas wont win against thors. trolls 1 OP 0

  • try moving the mutas with the minimap. if its anything like sc1 they will stay in formation better.

  • did they patch this???

  • @penguinslapper156 no, its not a bug

  • he helping the zerg!

  • I find it creepy how the Zerg HUD moves.

  • @natey10101

That's part of the design aesthetic I love :)

As for balance: the official #s show Terrans are favored on most servers by <5% but other factors (like # of players per race and what race the campaign familiarizes most players with) could account for this data.

I've found in my play + watching pro games, the Zerg race's designed to encourage expansion. You must out-macro your opponent. Whether needing an econ advantage to win means ur race is weak is a dif. Q.

  • @EminemTheRapLegend wtf are you talking about the video is not about splash damage, it's about avoiding it by avoiding clumping, did you even watch the vid even halfway? The realization is that Mutas dont' necessarily have to clump up when attacking, it's how you position them over the target and hwere they are when they target something.

  • @darknessofkrish what i was trying to say was that every (halfway) good player already knows how to prevent that because it is so fuckin obvious.....that's why i complained about this video

  • @EminemTheRapLegend Well then I guess I'm just a quarter way good player, and I wasn't aware of just how good the splash damage was or that they really won't clump if you position them that way :P. And this vid was from August just a few weeks after release so the info was probably a little more relevant then.

  • @darknessofkrish

    complain about your face

  • @EminemTheRapLegend

    Video helped me.

    So his mission was accomplished.

    Suck it dipshit.

  • @EminemTheRapLegend

fucking haters make me sick. i'm fed up with them. some people are probably better because of this video, so if you are already on top of this tactic move on. bitch, move on.

  • You can also utilize other certain air units like Banshees to do the Magic Box, if it's possible...

  • would be great if some1 created this map for testing :)

cuz im a sc2editor noob. tnx

  • Zerg is definitely imbalanced, you gotta be a decent zerg to beat a mediocre terran.

  • @Ibakecookiess

No. I'm a Diamond zerg player and I don't even agree. The only problem I really have against T is late-game if I get stuck on muta/ling or something. Otherwise, I'll just run over them. Just learn to utilize banelings.

Also, muta harass, contain them, expand like crazy and utilize the fact that they're so freaking immobile.

  • So, now stacking mutas = bad?

  • @kirillos24

When there's splash dmg, stacking units has always been bad. What are you suggesting?

  • @wanzed T'was a question. Thanks for telling =) Haven't played SC1 much....

  • I don't really get this.. =/... 4 Thors are way cheeper than 24 Mutas, that's not a good compensation imo. Mutas are generally not good against Thors, Ultralisks or Brood Loords are more effectiv in this situation. Magic Box is in any case useful, but to be honest, except of bronze players, no one would let his thors allone, I have always 4 oder 5 Vikings ready, for instance, that the enemy comes with Mutas

  • @3v3ryt1m3

Read the fucking box in the beginning of the video. Fucking kids these days.

  • @wanzed

listen carefully, cause I talk only once to retarded people:

A situation like this one, you will never be into while playing. 24 Mutas?? That's even for bronze players too much, it doesn't make any sense. The only things you really need in this game are micro/macro skills. I've seen units with over 50 kills, that's impressive and it's more realistic to bring this in comparison with the magic box.

  • @3v3ryt1m3

Haha, you're the retard here, fucking moron.

24? Who says it has to be 24? Can't you think for yourself? Even with 10 mutas. which isn't that uncommon - I'm talking from my own Diamond point-of-view and a lot of replays from top players, but you probably wouldn't know shit about this, Gold newbie), this 'trick' will be beneficial.

Ehm, micro/macro? Doing this is part of microing correctly you fucking moron.

And 50 kills? What the fuck does that have to do with ANYTHING? Idiot kid.
