Romney is trying to discredit the polls by not attending. He's trying to make it difficult for second-tier candidates to use the polls as a launching pad for their campaigns. Romney Doesn't want to run in any of the polls because when the election is fixed and the candidate who was rightly elected into the primaries, Ron Paul, doesn't win, there will be little proof as to why the election was, in fact fixed.
It will be considered a "surprise" win, if Mitt Romney wins the primaries, instead of a nearly impossible win against Ron Paul, who would win the polls regardless.

Romney is trying to discredit the polls by not attending. He's trying to make it difficult for second-tier candidates to use the polls as a launching pad for their campaigns. He knows he runs the risk of Paul gaining steam and beating him out - so by not attending, there is a better chance that the media dismisses a Paul win. BUT, he doesn't understand that you can't stop an idea whose time has come ;)

It cost Romney too much money to bribe people in order to select his name in the straw poll. Romney would bus everyone in for free after he paid them tons of money, than he would pay for their Hotels (at the straw poll), and then he would pay for their expenses and food, and then he would beg them to vote for him, he would give them free merchandise and other expensive freebies, that is why most people would select him in straw poll, but many just went in the booth and voted Ron Paul secretly.
