  • A great covering, thanx a lot!! Best regards from Zagreb, Croatia..

  • Yep, I watched Paris Texas 3 times in a row back in '88 & I'd say that is a fairly succinct intrerpretation.

  • thankyou for your appreciation.

  • Bottleneck guitar is a Primal thing. There are those drawn to it, & those that are not. The ones that are have a certain inherent affinity. Maybe came from the same swamp 're something? Anyway check out a guy name of "Harry Manx" He's on MySpace. He plays a thing called a Mohan Veena. It's swamp music. It's Bottleneck.

  • Thanks very much!

I have seen Harry Manx in concert and his amazing instrument.

I guess we all come from the swamp originally so to speak, but I hope we're heading in the opposing direction when they blow the final trumpet

    Regards DC

  • For sure. It be nice if they blow "The Last Call" with a bull bass, a piano, a saxophone & some sort of bottleneck guitar. Like the "Battle of Jericho" when the walls came tumblin' down.

  • heard this song by Ry Cooder for the first time tonight on the Radio, couldn't find the original on Youtube, but found this superb cover, thank you so much for covering it so well and posting it! AMAAAAZINGG!!

  • that was some soulful stuff. i like your style.

  • thanks a lot

  • The movie is an all-time favorite for the story and Ry Cooder's pickin'. You did a very, very nice job with your pickin. I love the sound of steel on steel, but especially acoustic. Very nice.

I love open d much more then open g for some reason/??????????

  • That was beautiful. I love open d tuning. Great work!

  • This is reasonably simple to play but to get the emotion into the tune is bloody difficult.. You have done a great job. Well done.

  • Thank you for your kind words.

  • bloody brilliant

  • thankyou

  • Is really Ry Cooder? Because this is awesome either way, watching the raw deal on Paris Texas. Paris Texas got me into the blues.

  • thanks

  • Slide guitar is all about feeling, showing your emotions.

  • thanks...you can, dig deep.

    DC

  • Thanks kindly, and glad you liked it.

  • Lovely job. Forget any critics - you nailed it!

I can play the guitar reasonably well but I'll never beat that.

  • Thanks dude, that was awsome and for a cheapo parlor guitar it produces a beautiful voice and tone. You did Ry proud on that one, for sure!

  • Thanks brotherwally

  • Any guitar is a $5000.00 Martin in the right hands.

    Nice job, brother.

  • Thanks, wish I had 5000 in the bank.

  • niceee sound! i'm addicted to that!

    Thanks

  • very nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!! excelent sound!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thankyou

  • good !

  • thankyou

  • good sounds

  • thankyou

  • very nice.

i remember seeing Paris, Texas (the first time) and being sucked into the tone of the film by this opening sequence.

i like the personality you lend it.

your "set" is nice, too. i am imagining you in an old airstream near terlingua, a bucket of iced beers at your feet.

    good job.

  • Thanks kindly, a bucket of ice cold beers and an old airsream in the desert, you should write a screenplay.

    Cheers

  • Great but, a minor note (half tone down on the first note on the second part of the mainriff). You know, more blues on that note. Slide a little bit lower.

  • I play it my way, it's not meant to be an antiseptic clone of the original, that would be clever , but boring, and defeat the whole artistic expression of dong it with your own feeling.

    Thanks

  • Moody piece of playing.....not easy to do and you nailed it.....good one mate !!!

  • thankyou!

  • That's a great song, and you did it justice. Thanks.

  • thankyou!

  • Beautiful take on the song. Thank you.

  • Thankyou!

  • very nice.

  • Thanks

  • Great sound mate!

  • Thanks

  • excellent! It's obvious how much you feel the song.

  • Thanks , those great tunes kinda do that to you.

    Cheers Dan

  • Going thru my favorites and happily found this. Your vids really make me wanna play guitar! (I can't play a note on one to save my life.)I've always played drums but there is nothing you can play on drums that bring out these kind of feelings. Thanks again DB

    Sincerely Allan

  • Alan, thanks and maybe you can dig into these feelings you mentioned and apply them to attacking the guitar in a methodical way, start small, build gradually, as slide open tunings are great for those new at guitar.

    Dean

By the way , I love the drums, but can't work out what those two wooden sticks are for!!!

    haha

  • Very nice take on this wonderful and haunting music

  • thanks a lot

  • absolutely amazing

  • thanks kindly

  • This is an excellent "earthy" version. It is very raw and powerful. There are many versions of this theme. This I would imagine ,was how it was first played ..

  • You are too kind, but I appreciate your comments, and glad you had some positive feelings about such a CLASSIC tune!

    Cheers, Dean

  • I think it sounds freaking cool man!!

  • thanks friend

  • i loved it!!! great sound even if it was a parlour geetar.

  • okie dokie ...thanks

  • to jesusjones ... the fretboard clicks ARE part of what makes this styles music SO good & give it an earthey feel .. If U remove them , it sounds too clean & takes away from the atmosphere of this & other tunes that R meant to have fretboard clicks in them ...not just IMO ..a Fact !!! have a nice day now :-) ...

  • I agree with you friend!

And so does Ry Cooder and John hammond.

  • That's what I tell the fretboard click haters,( and there a a few) if you want antiseptic , or want it real, you choose.

    Cheers

  • You did a VERY good job!

I've got something like a slidemetal thing too.

But its not to put around your finger, it's more to play a Dobro guitar.

It's heavy as hell and I can't play anything like this with it.

Anyway, I think you did it awesome.

    5 stars!

  • thanks kindly, keep practicing it will eventually happen

    Dan

  • All the best man, ive subscribed an when i have something decent to offer i`ll post it but i wouldnt hold your breath,,he he. Talk again.

  • ok thanks

  • lovely, thanks for that, nice control, you made the space between seem as important as the notes to make the tune timeless

  • Thanks kindly!

  • Youre absolutely welcome, i could listen all day. I just recently got turned onto slide when i heard the track Jackie Blue and now theres no goin back, people like you are an inspiration. Live long

  • That slide intro by The OMD on Jackie Blue is a ripper, I think it's standard tuning though, not open tunigs as I play mostly, alyhough I must learn it.

    Cheers

  • ***** blues is black, black is back (amy whitehouse)

    rudi

  • THANKYOU RUDI

  • sweet,,thank you, nice and relaxed..,I am gonna try that,,

  • thanks

  • The very tune that turned me on to blues in general and especially slide. Nice rendition.

  • Thanks , you must love those rice biscuits

    Dean

  • haha - I try not to eat too many.

  • Yeah, it's a strait guitar tune. Sound track btw. There is a guy here playing it on electric guitar. Check that out.

  • ok thanks will start to learn this when I have free time

  • Great tune man. Keep up the good work!

Would like to hear you play Southern comfort by Cooder too. Don't care about self appointed "experts" like Mr Jesus

  • Thanks ,and I don't.

See if I can learn that tune, haven't actually heard it, is it a straight guitar piece?

  • Great man ! Nice tune! I agree, The ones who can't play, is always the most loud mouthed "exsperts".

Keep up the good playing! Would love to hear you do Southern comfort by Cooder too.

  • stop clicking the fretboard!

  • Yes Sir Jesus!

Interestingly noticed your lack of guitar videos.

Sometimes the rudest critics are the ones that can't play at all!

  • Ya Ive been playing since I was 6...but that dont matter, You sound great execept for the fretboard clicks...I think I posted that comment when I was in a bad mood, sorry.

  • ok thanks

  • yeah you suck

  • Are you talking to me or Jesus?

  • i'm ment jesusjones, i mean it's easy to complain i'd like to see him play it better

  • Ok,I was unsure.

    DB

  • lovely work man ....

    peace & love

  • thanks and Happy New Year

  • So cool man, thank you - love the movie and really love this guitar piece - nice played.

  • thanks

  • That was awesome !! It gave me goosebumps.

  • Thanks sincerely!

    DB

  • That was awesome!!! It gave me goosebumps.

  • Lucky you are - you got the gift ;-)

It's the feeling for the piece and the technique for the instrument - you have both.

Even cheap wood can produce resonance.....

    Thx for sharing!

  • Thankyou sincerely, it is a majestic piece of music.

    Dean

  • Sounds nice, good upload.

  • thankyou

  • Very funny Larry, I used to smoke ,till I lost one of my lungs, now I cut my smokin' in half!(Cheech and Chong?)

    Cough..............

    Cheers, Dean

  • Damn that was nice. Thanks. After that I felt I needed a cigarette...and I don't smoke.

  • Muchas Gracias

  • Bravo!

  • Very good job sir

  • Thankyou sir!

  • this piece is called "dark was the night, cold was the ground," written by blind willie johnson. this version is very nice, but viewers please check out the original recording. no video exists for it. musicians have been trying to capture willie's technique for years. no one has ever succeeded.

  • Thanks, technique really isn't the thing here on Youtube , it's the feeling and your own interpretation that counts, just like the creators who said it their way, everybody should express their feeling, not just parrot the original.

  • what guitar are you using?

  • Garden variety parlour guitar

  • is there a name brand you could suggest

    i don't have a lot of $ to spend and i

find the good ones are way expensive

    -cheers

  • I guess you could look at an Epiphone 00 size type parlour style guitar , I think model no. is

ELV 00, or something like that, I'll check and let you know.

You can get this smaller body guitar around 200 second hand, or 350 new.

If you will send me a email address, I will post you a picture of the exact guitar I'm thinking of.

    Dean

  • This is great! I love your tunes. Soulful!

  • Thankyou

  • 5 stars man

  • thankyou

  • "thats some sweet country blues."

    -Saucepanjeff

  • thanks jeff, just the mention of sweet country blues is enough for me

  • Nice playing with lots of feeling, Cooder's style is hard to emulate but you did it your way and it sounds great, happy to see that we share the Love of Ry Cooder's music

Your parlor guitar sounds really "rich"

  • Thankyou ,glad you liked it.

    DC

  • thankyou for the kind commentary, I appreciate your interest.
