@TheSmoshmy Please understand, Greenhouse is about 90 years old, do you possibly think that a 90 years old Legend can play as well as when they were younger or around that age? I don't think so. Greenhouse whipped out this piece something he probably hasn't played in years, to show someone, who has probably been practicing for months, how to play it.
@k73f Greenhouse was around 92 at the time of this video, but unfortunately he died in May last year =( Generally speaking though, it looks like being a classical musician can lead to long life - look at Greenhouse, he was 95 when he died, Casals was 98. Parisot is still around and he's in his 90s, Starker and Shuttleworth are well into their 80s, so hopefully this is a good sign!
You advise a student how to play more musically and intellectually when what they do does not convince. You really think this student had anything to say at the start? How can the Greats help me is what this is about. And boy, does he help and inspire this student!
Technical tips R 4 people who don't work enough in order 2 discover themselves.
On the other hand though, i think donaldcallen is being away too nice/polite towards the this student in particular - & others like him in general:-)
Meaning: the fact that people need 2 B "taught" how a phrase should sound is outrageous!
What's wrong with their instincts (or they have no ears at all)? Why do they want 2 B musicians, if they don't have the basic skills (musical common sense)?!?
@akifusion I think this makes a lot of sense. Were the greats "taught" how to shape a phrase? I don't think so.I think that they developed their art through incredible hard work to gain technical mastery. then a lot of passionate listening to great artists and great music, a lot of trial and error. a lot of natural development over time and then a lot of self-reliance on their own instincts and intuition. To tell a student "how' to play something strikes me as only encouraging inauthenticity.
@NonoRocca This pupil doesn't like this recording either :) And it was recorded 6 years ago. He is the principal cellist in in the Munich Broadcast Orchestra now
So basically he's just telling the kid how to play like him. Not very good imo. He should tell him tips like lift your fingers etc, but not teach this kid how to play the song how he would.

I am not a 'cellist, but I actually liked the student's sound more than the master's..Greenhouse struck me as a bit rough.
