  • That chord at 3:12 is amazing!

  • Amazing

    - Finland

  • Lovely performance! And your Finnish is very good. I am native Finnish and I understood each word :)

  • TwT So Beautiful!!!

  • This is awesome, good job! You're finnish is really cute (but it's very good thinking that you don't speak it!) :)

  • Beautiful, love it!!!

Your Finnish sounds pretty terrific to me!!! *****

  • I think I favorited this video 3 time already hahaha xD

  • Check out KYN - Rajaton :)

  • @LauluTiia Just listened to them singing Kaipaava - wonderful! They have a nice, focused sound and I liked the little embellishments and extra pitches they added to the arrangment. Thanks!

  • I just noticed my writing wasn't so correct..of course I meant "Check out KYN - Kaipaava" =)

  • This is one of my favorite Rajaton songs!!

Lovely work : ) I need to find to a friend to sing the male harmonies with me....

  • Good job guys! I'm from Finland and I know that finnish is a hard language, but you did that very well! :)

  • I am from Finland and I have seen Rajaton couple of times live. Work on the pronounciation (or however it's written), then I think this song would be EVEN MORE awesome! You are so talented guys really! :)

  • I get chills, amazing talent!

  • Brilliant, absolutely awesome!! gives me goosebumps - ;) - thank you!!

  • Great job guys! :) your pronounciation is marvelous! Loving it

  • I love this song, and this performance is brilliant ;)!

  • This is amazing .

  • che schifo, fate venire voglia di suicidarsi

  • Come on! who the fuck said you don't have permission to perform anything on this on this planet if you can do it properly. What the fuck is wrong with some people.

  • @GHOSTVAL Hahaha - my first comment with profanity, and it's in my support! Thanks, Ghostval!

  • great guys!

  • Very beautiful :) And you really have reached emotions that this song needs - like the finnish melancholy.

  • My god you guys are talented. And what struck me most was that you're from Canada! The way you pronounce scandic letters is amazing. All f**king thumbs up <3

  • Fantastic! Think I'll need to get a Rajaton tee for myself maybe :-)

  • As a Finn I can proud say that the pronunciation is excellent! There is only a very little accent that gives away that you are not a Finn. You are both very talented singers. <3

  • This is amazing guys! So nice to "see" you both again, if only virtually! Let us know if you are ever in Vancouver - would love to see you

    Matt & Heather

  • nice. your pronunciation is very good!. the difference comes in your own language i think its much softer then finnish. only word that i would say were too much off was ''hienoinen'' just before the guy comes along. u cant hear the h letter.

but dont get me wrong i have sang this song many years and it was beautiful. and it brings your own style in it too.

  • amazing. . . quality recording, mixing and of course Singing :D

  • Tämä maailma pimiä on.. the "tämä" word sounds not finnish :P too much H on it.. don't say thama xP say tämä xD good job anyway from a non-finnish.. beautiful xP and "minä matala .." it's not mathala it's just matala without any kind of Hs in mid xP but still good !!!

  • You're wonderful! This is just so beautiful - what a great idea.

  • Gotta hand it to you...well done! Your finnish sounds great! And that´s not very easy...finnish is a difficult language...or so I´ve heard from my foreign friends. Oh yeah...nice voices too! Check out another finnish group ...Club For Five.. I bet you´ll love it!

  • Comment removed

  • thanks! One of my favorite old folk songs! A Finnish teacher (for foreigners) from Finland. - Keep on pushing yourselves forward - no limits... :)

  • love it.. you "six" sound great ;o)))

  • I really like the girls voice! I also like how you would look at each other. Really cool effect!!!

  • beautiful voices!

  • sorry...I couldn't help myself Marsha...I mean Michael...all kidding aside, you and your bro are great and your mom and dad are very proud

  • The Brady Bunch! ...Not really, y'all are awesome, pure as the white driven snow...keep at it

  • @arclight777 Haha - that's what my mom said the first time she saw it

  • I'll just assume that the one dislike was an accident.

Such pure tone and melody, beautiful.

  • Great, Great, Great, Great, Great, and the last guy gets a good rating, not great. 5/6 stars ain't bad. :-)

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually witnessed a high school Finnish choir from Sibelius perform this and many other pieces! Love the Finnish people sooo much! I still talk to them thank to Facebook...Anywhoo I have been looking for a way to purchase some sheetmusic and thank to you I can! Thank you so much! Love the harmonic dissonance!

  • Your pronunciation is very good! The were only few parts where a Finn heard that your not Finnish, and that's really something! :D I think you've done pretty good job in this video :)

  • @moimaailma Thanks! Let me know if you noticed any words or sounds that we're consistently getting wrong so that in my next video I can come closer to fooling some Finns!

  • @michaelsaunders77 Well, since you asked; you could pronounce the "a" with the two dots (Ää) more sharp - like the "a" in the word "cat". The word "ikävä" is pronounced great, I bet you'll find the difference if you check it.

The only other sound that's "wrong" is "L" - It's technically right, but it's a bit off. For example, your "kultani" sounds a bit like "cool-tani" because of your accent on the "L". All else dead-on, I think.

She needs a bit more work, though.

Oh, I'm a finn, too, btw.

  • haaahaaa when the guy starst singing it soooo CUTE how it sounds cuz im from finland :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD keep on going !

  • Both of your finnish sounds great! You must've listened the song like crazy. o/

  • @TheRawrnstuff Thanks! Yep, I've probably listened to that song a hundred times.

  • @winlovefulness Haha - thanks for the insight there! I guess I should get her to lean towards hair down and slightly-overexposed lighting for the next video. How does that hotness compare to the other video (armottoman osa) in your opinion?

  • this is soooooo freakin excellent cause i don't know how else should i put it

  • Hey! This is awesome! I´m from Finland and a big fan of Rajaton. You do justice to this song, and I mean it. Your finnish is not pitch perfect, obviously, but pretty good. Super!

  • What did u use to make this?? I really wanna make something like this :) awesome video! :)

  • @ninoboy213 The most important tools were the microphone, the interface, and the software. I could have done this with any "large-diaphragm condenser mic", any USB-compatible interface with "phantom power", and any recording software with unlimited multitrack capability. My specific equipment is all listed in the underbar.

  • nice !!! thumps upp

  • Beautiful voices, both, and the tracks are very well synchronised.

Hope to see more from you two...

  • Trippy

  • I was scared this was going to be embarrassing to look and listen at

    But it was beautiful

Though the dude underneath, I thought you were a nerd, but when you started singing, your expression was suddenly much more friendly

    nice ^^

  • @GerbendeJong Haha - thanks! Sorry about my expressions when I wasn't singing - they DO look weird!

  • Beautiful! Loved the video synchronization too - how you guys look at each other :)

  • @carmen75013 Thanks! I can't make up my mind about the head-synchronization. I ended up not doing it for my newest video because I thought it looked a bit cheesy here.

  • Hi! As a finn I love to hear you singing this! Very interesting, I can´t imagine how does it feel like to you, to sing in finnish. Languages are interesting, the boundaries... and especially breaking them =) KIITOS! KAUNISTA!

  • Thanks! It feels great for me to sing in Finnish. I read the translations to get a general feel for the meaning, but when I'm singing I don't understand what most of the individual words mean. I almost think the language sounds so beautiful that understanding the individual words would detract from the experience. I like the element of mystery!

  • I watch this quite often, it's beautiful.

  • Just awesome!

  • I keep watching and listening to this! Really one of my all time favorites on YouTube.

  • Thanks! I'll be releasing another slow one with harmonies like this at some point in the next couple months.

  • @michaelsaunders77 Well yay I'm looking forward to it :D By the way, I'm a huge collegiate a cappella fan and I saw that you are in UPenn Dischord. I plan to order your CD soon. I've had the version of 'Suddenly I See' in my playlist for many months now, and I love it!

Keep up the great work! Your a cappella inspires me! :)

  • I love this so much. You are both out of this world.

  • Oh my god, that was awesome! We are singing this song at school and I absolutely love it!

  • And about the language. You don't speak it? Well, it was absolutely great, almost perfectly pronounced! First I didn't even realise that you weren't Finnish.

  • Hahaha - thanks! Is this a popular song for school choirs in Finland to sing?

  • No, I don't think so... But we have a group of skilled singers at school =D And our teacher just came with a note and said: You're going to sing this =P

But I guess people sing it in schools sometimes. Not Rajaton's version though, the traditional one =P

  • Amazing.

  • I'm from Finland and I absolutely loved this! Thank you so much. :) Oh and your finnish is actually very good.

  • Very good! I actually just came home from Rajaton's Christmas concert :)

  • Oooh, I'm so jealous! I haven't been able to see Rajaton for three and a half years!

  • Michael is an excellent singer and cute too ;)

  • This sounds awesome :) You both are very good singers!

  • beautiful!

  • My recent Joy to the World video prompted my cousin Mark to send me here to see this song. I'm glad I saw it. Well done!

  • About 0:47... wow

  • I'm Finnish, you are awesome! Give me goosebumbs!

  • Very nice singing!

  • Thanks. I actually just watched your Over The Rainbow collab - it's really good!

  • I found that very enjoyable. You both are very sweet. ^^

As a born native finn i can tell you that your finnish was a-ok. I can hear that you are foreign(to me), but it doesen't get in the way of the singing one bit.

And yes, the title means "The Longing One".

Oh and if you want the words that i think you pronounce just a little bit funny:

"Yhden" comes out as "YhTen" which is a bit odd, make it sound like a D.

"Hienoinen" comes out as "Ienoinen", bring out the H as if you were saying "hat"

  • "Matala" has a weird sound on the "ta" syllable, the finnish T doesen't have that err... moist quality to it. X)

"Etkä" comes out "Etkha", a harder K should fix that.

Ok that's about it, and remember, this is absolute nitpicking and none of those things really matter. It's really fine the way it is. :)

  • Thanks for the pronunciation help! I'll make sure my Ds and Hs are clearer on future videos.

  • Hey guys! It is Andrea Grant! Man you guys have grown up! WOW MICHAEL YOUR A BASS! and man girl! You are beautiful and such a great voice! I will see you guys at the christmas concert this year!

  • Hey, Andrea! Thanks for saying hi. Yeah, my soprano days are over. I won't be at the Christmas concert, but Lauren will. You were in Newfoundland where we first saw Rajaton, right?

  • this is amazing guys

see ya @ the concert @ christmas <3

  • 1:08, that gave me chills.

    awesome.

  • They would be proud of you, this was truly beautiful :)

  • Aww, that's the best compliment I can imagine. Thanks!

  • AMAZING!

Even though you dont speak finnish, but your vocals are great!

Its funny you like finnish songs, and i dont even though i am finnish...

    BUT i love rajaton!

  • Hahaha - thanks! I can't believe you don't like songs in your language - I think it's very beautiful, especially compared to English, which I find ugly for singing. Maybe it's because I don't understand the individual words I'm singing, so that adds an element of mystery for me.

  • Alwaysflashy, thanks for your concern. I've heard Belle Canto and the Chamber Choir. You guys are good.

I'd like to know who arranged the version you sing. If it wasn't Jussi and Essi, then we're actually dealing with different arrangements of the same Finnish folk song.

Thanks for the criticism as well. Yes, there are some tuning issues, but I thought it was pretty good quality for an amateur recording. I'd be interested to know which words were the most poorly-pronounced.

  • Your singing is great. I really love this song and I've been also performing this song with a Finnish choir. I can hear your foreign accent but you are pronouncing very well, I am amazed :D

Did you knew the meaning of the lyrics while you were singing? Those are very touching.

  • Kiitos, Kati! We have a translation, so we know what the emotions in each phrase should be. But we haven't looked up the definitions of most of the individual words.

  • Some words are very old so you may not find those from dictionaries, but if you like I can try to explane some words. :D

  • The copyright issue has been resolved: 2 years ago the score had not been published yet.

  • How did you get the sheet music for this song. Because I do believe it was written especially for one Canadian choir and you should not be able to have access to it.

  • This song was arranged by Essi Wuorela and Jussi Chydenius (both Rajaton members) for Rajaton to sing. They published through Sulasol, which is the company that sold me the music. I believe it is based on a Finnish folk tune - perhaps you're thinking of a different arrangement that is not available publicly.

  • No it is most definetly this arrangement because there was a big argument between two conductors when my choir went to sing this song. So I would take this video down because you are risking getting fines for copywriting reasons like we did.

  • ¡GENIAL! ^.^

  • Wow I really love this video! Great job :). Love your voices. Amazing Finnish too!

  • Fantastic! I'm sure Rajaton would be proud of both of you!

  • wonderful job!!

  • Excellent job with the Finnish! :) I like your interpretations of Rajaton songs. We've done a lot of those with our choir but it just doesn't work as well with 30 people instead of 6...

  • This is beyond fabulous.

  • Lauren and Michael, that was inspiring!

  • I want your Rajaton t-shirt so bad!

  • wow !

great Music , obviusly great pronounciation :D

    i Dig you rmelodies !

  • Great singing and nice pronunciation. It gives a feeling of listening to people who are fluent in finnish, which is not the case, I presume.

  • Thanks, Kilu! We don't speak Finnish, but we do love the sound of the language!

  • i love her voice!

  • needless to say i have spent the last hour listening to that group. you guys rock

  • i am so glad that you are covering this group if it were not for youguys i would have stayed ignorant... this group is by far one of THE BEST vocal groups. i grew up on TAKE 6 and all that cool stuff. but had no idea were to get this standard of singing. this is just as soulful as any TAKE 6. you guys are good too. like for real. GOOD WORK thank you! GOD BLESS

  • Thanks! I'm really happy that I helped you find Rajaton.

  • this is great. i wish i new what you guys were saying

  • this is a beautiful video and the clarity of both of your voices is brilliant

but i will say the length of the last note made me laugh quite a lot :)

  • You are both my heroes forever

    Love, Rena

  • I couldn't have done it without my apprentice trainer way back in the day!

    :)

    Love, Lauren

  • VERY polished - you two work well together - why didn't you get her to help you with Butterfly?

  • Really beautiful performance! My finnish amateur choir is practising this, and it is always, always both difficult and very enjoyable.

You pronounce the words very well, I have no trouble

understanding. (And yes, it is 'Kaipaava', wishing to be with Someone very dear...)

  • Good job! Thank you so very much for singing this song. It has been missing from Youtube way too long :) It's one of my favourite finnish folk songs, lyrics are so sad and strong.

  • Wow Man this is AWESOME! And great job with the collaboration with a girl too :).

I believe the title is Karipaava, not Kaipaava... or am I wrong?

  • Thanks, Dan! Your new collab is spot on, by the way!

And I checked the CD insert - no "r".

  • Thanks, I"ll be changing my itunes' title now haha.

  • actually it IS kaipaava. I am finnish girl, I'll tell you it's KAIPAAVA! :) means yearning, longing...

    it's very beautiful song

  • I don't know the title of the song but kaipaava means something in finnish unlike Karipaava

  • Ok, again then: it's a very nice multitrack collaboration and I hope to hear more from you two.

  • Thanks! We'll be working at it!
