CHRIS MCCANDLESS IS NO ONE TO LOOK UP TO. OR TO ADMIRE. THATS MOVIE BULLSHIT. CHRIS WAS A CONFUSED AND FUCKED UP PERSON. HE WANTED TO BE ALONE AND DIE ALONE. ITS THAT SIMPLE.
Chris was prepared, he would have made it out alive too had it not been for a mold growing on the potato seeds he ate and it wasnt that he stopped thinking of himself as no longer free spirited but in a book cant remember who by he wrote "happiness only real when shared with others"
i truly respect chris and he and i are a lot a like i spent 5 years hitchhiking canada and have spent 3 months in the wild aka no mans land ultimate freedom i made some travel videos check em out on my page
Had this guy studied George Ohsawa's macrobiotic philosophy he would have gone about his adventure in a much wiser fashion. Because he did not he was foolish and reckless. One should never stop talking to others, especially loved ones, no matter how difficult. Macrobiotics teaches one to live free like wild birds, fish and other animals do. To never work or be attached to money. To live as close to nature as possible. Ancient eastern school of thought far exceeds any western school of thought.
Lots of young people run from their dysfunctional families. Many have use drugs and alcohol as an escape / adventure, sometimes with deadly consequences.
This guy used cross country travel and societal abandonment as his drug. He basically overdosed on some delusional notion that he could live a poetic solitary life in the wild unprepared. Sad but true.

The distress note below was purposely not part of the movie.
Attention possible visitors. "S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak too hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August ?"
He screwed up and in the end no longer though of himself as the free-spirit Alex Supertramp.
@imUntraceable Maybe you got a little teary eyed watching this Hollywood hype. Maybe you got a gay tingle wishing you could have held and comforted the dumb hobo.
Get yourself a fragrant bottle of lotion and a warm moist towel and cuddle up to the DVD player again, seeing that you enjoy acting like an emotional ass-clown.
@SpiralsHappen - I totally agree. Everyone keeps talking about how "free spirited "he is, etc. Here's the thing: it's fricking easy to be free spirited when you're all alone; what's hard is to be free-spirited among other people. It's not an accomplishment to be yourself when you're alone - try finding a way to be yourself, while you're among others. Also, he's DEAD. So, really, how did that work out for him?? Um, I'd say, not, since he's dead.
@travpoet He was reckless and didn't think his Alaska trip through well enough - The alaskan wilderness cares not for passion or ideals or philosophy. And that was his ultimate mistake. He had this idea, that grew too big and he assumed things that werent true about nature. BUT that being said, his lifestyle, his thought process in regard to society, all of that is so admirable - truly not for everyone - I am so sick of the materialism, and superficiality of life that I understand his philosophy

@nignogery it was still beautiful film making and a brilliant film as a whole, exquisitely acted and who knows how many people would know about Chris if it wasn't for the film???? The book is almost always better than the film but it was still phenomenal work xx
"Society, you're a crazy breed / I hope you're not lonely without me / Eddie Vedder and Chris McCandless a perfect match. Can't wait to watch the dvd. The book is great btw!
Great movie, he had a very liberal minded. NOt too many people willing to go into the wild for too long. He is one of the bravest one. Without humans, Way too crazy.
