  • did they mention anything about polio or tuberculosis, low sanitation even in the cities, hairy armpits and many more of sweet 20s? :) So, do not complain. And watch "Midnight in paris" if you are so in love with the 20s (to get the message, you know).

  • 0:16, Epic sax guy of the twenties.

  • Great fun !!!!

  • It was The Roaring Twenties. Many folks were doing just fine. What I find troubling is the tone of a few posters who seem to have an issue with so-called upper classes. America doesn't have the classic caste system, even the poor can rise to the top. Don't be jealous, join them!

  • I wish I had been 20 in 1920 :(

  • @keykeyBLUEBELL

But then you would be long gone by now... unless you were 112 years old :-p

  • @Barkermush I don't care :D now we have justin bieber, oil disasters, global warming and there's only crap on tv. i don't need that haha

  • Sagacious,You have a point,a good point but,always a but,I fear,the poor are so uninteresting!

  • Wasn't there like an economic crisis in the 1920's, well late 20's?

I thought they were still recovering from the effects of the First World War in the 20's.

  • @Barkermush There was at the beginning of the 20s with a deflationary depression in the US, very much an after-effect of world war 1 and the unbelievable level of war spending and monetary expansion. But as with both world wars, the US itself was relatively untouched.

  • Ah!! Days when men were men,, and women were double breasted....

  • This is such a biased perspective. The videos capture the rich... take a look at the poor and "middle class" lifestyle, and you'll see a lot of misery and death and disease.

  • my grandma is about to celebrate her 101st birthday, I should ask her what it was like to live in this era.

  • @XmuertenegraX Is she single?

  • Does anybody knows which movie is it in 1:55 ?

  • The best part is at 3:26, when she readjusts her strap and her nipple get a little bit too much action.

  • I was born in the wrong decade

  • @MRcagekicker Thank you. i deeply appreciate your perspective. i was once quite obsessed with 'paris in the twenties' and now i am more obsessed with picking up dying children from hospitals and gutters in Mozambique with Heidi and Rolland Baker. THANKS aaron1912! do you know the Carl Fisher and Henry Joy stories?? great post!!

  • Just saw THE ARTST and devoted my FACEBOOK page to the film...and era, so yours is on my wall today. Thanks for sharing this fantastic real-life reel.

  • what about the poor side of the twenties? working in a dingy factory sucking in coal smoke and getting paid pennies. thirteen years old, addicted to morphine because the dentistry was so bad and one could not afford it anyway. having to share a bed with grandfather who shakes and sweats all night, coughing blood and dying from tuberculosis. the next meal was not certain and and disease ran rampant in the city. yes the twenties were a magical time. the electric park burned with sis inside.

  • @MrCagekicker Make your own video then.

  • @arielgirl529 hey im just sayin! i was fortunate to know my grandfather who went to ww2 in his late thirties and told me about his experiences in kansas city in the twenties and thirties. his perspective was that of a hard life in which nothing was certain and danger was eminent. he worked for a candy comany till ww2 then volunteered for the navy. he retired from the railroad and lived to see the late eighties. he was a good man and told it like it was. i was glad he shared.

  • what is the song during the prt in color in the city?

  • @9519nick I also wanna know!

  • Nucky Thompson brought me here. Prohibition!! Yea!! *Pops champagne*

  • before weed was illegal, look how happy they were!

  • @DDSproductions08 Im still happy;p in my country it's legal haha

  • ...and freaks were freaks!

  • I wish we had modern cars that did that, Real Talk!

  • THat's what's up!

  • Anyone know the name of the first song? And please anyone check out the song I'm Your biggest Fan by my friend. It's on my channel(:

  • And they're all thinking that in less than one hundred years, everyone around the world will be watching them on a small box in their bedrooms.

  • cool. portable motor car for women

  • @ 2:57 i would so tap that ass.

  • @ivegotamagicstix In your dreams, Pedro...

  • hi, what were the cars made for women called? :)

  • Best "Ghost" Video ever. Most of these people are ...gone ,and yet they still found a way to dodge time and become immortals one way or another .

  • @etherealvox2010

nice comment (cool to see someone using their brain for contemplation on YT for once)

I'm 42, and my grandma is 102 years old in March, and still pretty much cognitivly in place, most of our conversations are small talk, but by crickey, it's sure some jaw-dropping shit when she roles out the memories of German occupation, workers conditions in the 30's and who and how really changed them etc etc

    Heres to you Astrid!!!

  • Замечательное видео! Благодарю! Наилучшие пожелания!

  • Ach, żyć tak w tych latach 20-tych! Pomarzyć już nie można? Beautifull dream.

  • Someone can tell me how's called the first song that appears on the video.

  • @MrAncor92 It's Variety Stomp by Fletcher Henderson.

  • I LOVE the 20's

  • ...and 90yrs from now...

  • Creepy? Yes, a little.

  • Smoking,drinking,and fun with eachother,

    Thats the life

  • @theTF2sniper what do you think we do now...lol

  • @theTF2sniper Then comes a crash.

  • @theTF2sniper Not to mention the smelly pussy.

  • @theTF2sniper People in the video are all upperclassmen. Think about the middle class and lower class. It's like people in the future watching a video clip of the 20th century with all the rich kids going to massive parties, and saying "Wow, Thats the life"

Take into account the middle and the lower class. Only SOME people had the party life in the 1920s because they were upperclass

  • @theTF2sniper For The Upperclasses.....

  • @korea902 Actually the US was one of the few places in the world at the time where life wasn't *that* bad for most people.

  • Was the next to last film reel real technicolor, or was it hand-painted?

  • @badreality2 I believe is real colour, but do you recognize any star? I recognize only Gloria S.... Greetings from Argentina, sorry for my English.....

  • @charlesnorte I don't recognize rany stars from the era. I watched this video just to take in the atmosphere of the 1920s. Everyone was so happy and loose. It was like living in a party that lasted an entire decade. :)

  • @badreality2 You are wrong, in 1920s some people was happy and some others was in misery, at least today we have the technology and we can live more better than before.

  • @charlesnorte ...at least for America.

What were the 1920s like in Argentina?

  • @badreality2 I believe that only the rich people like ours land owners, a few families enjoyed those days. For the rest of the people there aren´nt "roaring twenties". EEUU had a good times after WW1. May be?

  • Would it be okay if I use snippets of this video, with credit to you?

  • but only the rich could afford to be living lives like these, right?

  • Not everyone is six feet under! my Mum is still alive at 91! I know which time she prefers, national healthcare, central heating, a pension, telephones, washing machines, freezers, the list is endless. We need to appreciate what we have now, there have been no major wars since 1945, we all live longer and have much more choice in how we live, even those of us on low incomes have access to information, education and doctors services, luxuries for so many in the 20's...........

  • Disadvantages: no penicillin, Beatles, Internet

    Advantages: less government

  • How do you call that song?

  • never would i like to live in the past, no assigned roles now, all of them look like clones, spooky

  • They sure had a lot of SMOKE everywhere! Cigarette smoke and car exhaust smoke - how can they breathe

  • 1920 seemed alot better less distactions more family time more love.

  • Going back in time to any time period before 1940's would suck, unless you'd be an aristocrat.

  • @cadmus98 Urban areas, and that was not even a common feature there. Their deodorant back then was nearly as strong as today (It was perfume) and it was not antiperspirant and 3 outfits that were not washed often, including underwear.

My point is that people look at the 20's and say "Oh, I wish I could go back in time.." and they don't realize how boring it would be to go back in time to any time period before the 1950's, in my opinion.

  • @whatevr192 You only say that because you know of the modern interests today.

  • Butch and femme lesbians in the 1920's were hot! <3

  • Glad to see America was its own country at a time.Maybe that's how we became so uniquely rich. Now we follow Japan along with there evolution in technology and style of social science.I can say the enjoyment we find today is mostly in technology, rather than in each other. Not a good road to go down. Were not robots! We have souls!! And the ability to discover, which can be one of the greatest feelings.FACT! I guarantee the robot-road were racing down will lead to a world very miserable and dull.

  • There was no hygiene in the 20's. Giving up daily showers, deodorant, and more than 3 outfits.

Still seems appealing? I thought not.

  • @whatevr192 They had indoor plumbing in urban areas by the 1920's. Daily showers are unnecessary for a lot of people; once every second day will suffice. They had deodorant. As for more than 3 outfits, who really needs more than that?

  • Comment removed

  • I think this is interesting and charming, but I'm happy living in 2012.

Sure, there are SOME things about the 1920's that interest me, but overall things are better now.

You all say "Oh, look at that, people having fun without electronics". Look at yourself. You're on Youtube. Just embrace technology.

Maybe you guys would be more chill about the 20's if you read some book from the time and realized that it's not completely different from today AND things weren't all that great.

  • @whatevr192 Like I totally agree. I'm a lesbian and very satisfied with my power tools. Also if I get drunk and screw I can get an abortion. But the twenties were better for bush and I luv to go down on my BLGF Maggs after she takes a hot piss.

    Now that's a good taste!

  • @SweetJaneofGoth You don't think there were lesbians or abortions in the 20's? That stuff was taboo, but it WAS present. Why don't you read some books about the 20's so you're not brainwashed into thinking these were innocent times like 98% of the people here? Plus, there was a ton of dirty porn in the 20's.

  • umm how did i get from american gangster to this??

  • omg...if only men of the 1920s saw the bathing suits women wear today!....It would be equivalent to porn

  • If you love the 1920's era...check out the musical production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie"....one of my favorites! Takes place in 1922...Broadway version stars Sutton Foster...movie version stars Julie Andrews

  • 3:28 ,come on really?

  • Was in 5:09 Gloria Swanson?

  • before women are obliged to wear hat

now women should not be wearing elephant jeans but

skinny pathetic jeans even L H guys.

  • It's pretty cool to see how my grandparents grew up in those days, if they were still alive just imagine the stories they would have

  • Its nice to see that gay people were around almost 100 and ofcourse since the beginning of time, but this video is prove to all dick-faces who think homosexuality is a new "trend". It is also nice to see women in 1920s were sex toy subjects, and in 2012 still are and got worse due to the control and brain washing of straight horny men! Enjoy! :)

  • This video is just great, I find myself coming back to it over and over again.

  • Does anyone know what the first song is called or who it was by?

  • at 3:10's the good officer is checking for length of the bathing suits..If the bathing suits were too short they were asked to leave the beach. If they disagreed they got the hurt put on them and were arrested. Those were the days.

  • Ahhhh when people fell in love and worked out there problems instead of just leaving and moving on to the next, and the next, and the...

  • the 1920s were good providing you were a straight, rich, white, male. For women, minorities, gays, etc. it sucked and you were either a second class citizen, always at fear of your life, or some combo of the two

  • At 1:30 I want one of those!

  • Wow, first time I've seen that ancient three wheeled car. I wonder.... a 300cc, front axle, chain drive ?

  • who noticed the girl at 3:00 is hot/beautiful

  • cool vid ..now back to the future!

  • it's funny cause people from the 20's look young

  • @dieglhix Yes and if any of them are still alive, theyr'e over 100 years old!

  • the rich people in the 20's ....

  • The usual answer to people (myself included) about living back then is 'anesthetics', although they were around in the 20's. Still curious to note that the girls were well up on the driving thing, something thats not yet allowed in Saudi Arabia and a few other places.

  • I just came here from random :)

But if I had a choice I would go back to 2006. Why go back to years you weren't even born in? I would go back in time to relive my moments and my childhood that was taken from me. </3 Happy New Years.

  • Yeah apart from ricketts, child labour and abject poverty in "civilised countries" it'd be great eh?

  • @motosque1 you mean "civiliZed"?.... apparently, literacy is still over-rated....

  • @liljgoneman If you were better educated you'd know that, in British English, 's' instead of 'z' is standard usage for words ending in 'ized' . Remind yourself where the English language originated.

  • @usefulmusic Hey, your'e right! That language was invented in England, not America.

  • 3:41 mini skirt SO OUR days!!! omg

  • The footage at 2.00 and 2.20 What films are they from? Also What is the name of the first song played and who is it by?

    An absolutely Enchanting Video, most educational. Thank you Aaron1912. ★ ° . . . ☾ °☆ . * ● ¸ . ★ ° :. . • ○ ° ★ . *

  • The "to the city" part at 4:02 features 1940s automobiles (?)

  • @harmagician1 no- all of those cars were prior to the 30s from what I can see

  • They were all so alive and vibrant and now they are all 6 feet under, dead and gone. Makes me wonder who will be watching videos of us 100 years from now, seeing us all vibrant and lively today, only to be 6 feet under 100 years from now.

  • @harmagician1 Almost all of them are 6 feet under. I have a family friend that is 90 years old. She was only a child when she lived through the 1920s, but she is old enough to remember those good ol' times. :)

  • @harmagician1 You can always get cryonized :)

  • @harmagician1 I know what you mean. That circle of life thing can be rather depressing...

  • was i the only one dancing to the music?

  • Look, no Ipads or mobil phones.

People actually had to have fun with each other!!!!

  • @szaki He says on a comment board on youtube.

  • @szaki they knew how to enjoy life !!!

  • and to think about all the stuff we have now if i time traveled and said do u have an ipod i would look so stupid.

  • I am a classical pianist. It is my passion in life. Knowing my health would be fine, I would take the chance to live back then in a heartbeat. I would rule the world with my fingers. Ah yes.. great music, great fashion, no Justin Bieber. Life would be swell.

  • 62 Gangsters did not like this video

  • the cigs back then had no filter..a whole lot of smoking going on...i'll bet mostly everyone in this footage died from cancer

  • everybody in this movie is dead...great to see

  • I'd love to have the ability to travel through time and see everything with my own eyes and then change the course of history the way I see fit ^-^

  • @brokenthorn15 We tried that in order to finally establish world peace. It resulted in 2 world wars.

  • wow this is gay bring t on haters

  • The people were kind, jolly, and classy. The buildings were beautiful, the music was real. If it weren't for the Great Depression, I would so go there.

  • @Jguy365 Fortunately the Depression was mainly in the 1930s (it's usually said to have started about 1929), so you are good to go!

  • @eMuse5 Alright!

  • @Jguy365 i would still go if i could go back by god i would

  • @Jguy365 I agree, but another thing I don't like is that women's rights were shit

  • @Jguy365 I was licking my wounds from WWI. $#§###!

  • @Jguy365 the Great Depression hit in 1929, so it didn't really affect the decade that much (mostly just the 30s.)

  • @Jguy365 The 20's was a huge boom of consumption (the roaring part) fueled by easy credit. You would have had a great time - you just had to go to the backroom speakeasies if you wanted to drink.

  • @toolkien

20's were the boom economy, because US won the war!

Germany paid! $40 billion to England and France! They payed the US for helping them to win the war!

Until greedy investors crashed the market (margin loans) in 1929 and 7 year depression followed.

    Bang!!!!! WW2 saved their ass!

  • @Jguy365 how?

  • @Jguy365 U KNOW WHY ITS NICE???? NO NIGGERS

  • @maxwellthebest Not so fast! it was mostly "niggers" playing the music! That last score sounded like Carolina Stomp by Jelly Roll Morton.

  • @maxwellthebest ignorance at its finest (you)

  • @Jguy365 and also segregation

  • @Jguy365 the great depression really was at the end of the twenties. I wish I could go time hopping to the twenties, to Woodstock !

  • @Jguy365 if i were to commit murder and other crimes, 1920's is the place to be - forensics was crap, circumstantial evidence ruled, racism and sexism were totally acceptable, safety standards were crap, crude industrial technology, information was slow and minimal, their music was loud and analog. yeah, great place to be...

if someone builds a time machine, i'll have to follow you to the 1920's so i could rape and kill you and get away with it. then blog it and listen to my iPod.

  • @manualLaborer The thing was that people were so kind as to teach that stuff as bad. It was rarely seen. And anyway, racism and all of that had to happen at one point so we could learn from it and stop it. Besides, those things happen now and people can still get away with it.

  • @Jguy365 ok, i won't rape you. you have some good points. are you hot?

  • I don't think the music is very appropriate from 5:13 onwards.

  • Is this a Fletcher Henderson arrangement?

  • Search for "Claude Friese-Greene" (wiki, Amazon, youtube). He did colour movies in England in the 1920's. h t t p : / / filmstore . bfi . org.uk/acatalog/info_154.html

  • .....nur leider weiß man ja, was danach kam....

  • In about eight years, 1920 will have been 100 years ago. What the fffff.....

  • @TheChirpingAssholes 80 years where do you get that number? Shouldn't it be more like 9 years from this year? 2020-1920=100. 2020-2011=9

  • Comment removed

  • @coolieo389 It's almost 2012, give a couple of days. In 8 years, we'd be much closer to a hundred than we would be in nine. ^-^

  • @TheChirpingAssholes sorry grandpa

  • @TheChirpingAssholes And it seems like it was yesterday.

  • @TheChirpingAssholes I knowwww, now Tiatnic sunk almost 100 years ago.... weird... by the time i die (around 2085-2090) lol I'm young... 1920 would have been 165 years ago... WOO!

  • @TheChirpingAssholes and in another 100 years when our lives have extinguished people will look at us and say the exact same thing

  • @TheChirpingAssholes your screen name wtf :)

  • Every time period I think about wanting to live in, I start thinking about the problems of it. I came to realize that there is no time period that is "happy". They are all tumultuous in their own way and have their own problems. But of course in some decades they are worse than others.

Where it stands, I want my childhood from the 1990s back.

  • fascinating! i wouldn't have liked living in the 1920s though, i much prefer the present day. the 80s would have been interesting though if only for the music and technology. how did you make this video?

  • I don't recognize the actors..

  • back then kids were playing at the yard!!1121314123

  • 4:34 into the video. Is that a welcome for dirigibles?

  • <3

  • Favorite Women's style decades in the 20th century.

    1. 20's the haircuts and attitude, along with those skirts and dancing moves ='d sexy as hell. Contrast to stiff 40's look. Lillian Gish

    2. 60's. Makeup and miniskirts. Free-love look buried 40's and 50's. Natalie Wood, Goldie Hawn, Barbara Eden...

    3. 80's After horrendous 70's, before multiculturalism meshing, You could judge a posterior instantly with women's levis. Daisey Duke look, Suzanne Somers

  • it must read 'to live in the 1920s as a factory owner'

  • 4:20 drugs!

  • fuck watching these and having flashbacks

  • I would like to time travel to the 1940's and see the Stooges and witness World War II but

I would not want to stay there. I would alter history if I could and there would be no war and no Hitler.

  • There was nothing fun about living back in those days. No condoms no shaved pussy nothing to do in the house besides chores, no TV, no internet, no basic medicine (could barely cure pneumonia or even the flu), very limited communications besides writing letters. Those people would prefer to live in 2011.

  • maybe it wouldnt be so bad...but i dont like the music, cant say much for the new stuff now either

  • Ahh HBO's Boardwalk Empire ;p

  • A frolicsome lot; those flappers of the twenties. And you thought the nineties were gay.

  • First there was a huge war, then in the 20's you had a period of economic boom and happiness, then with the 30's an economic bust and great misery, then another huge war in the 40's. It's crazy time changes everything so dramatically.

  • Before the Blacks really made a mockery of big cities.

  • their all dead
