the opteron has kept up with todays tech pretty well...I have an Opteron 170 overclocked to 2.7ghz with RAID 0 hard drives...that thing keeps up with some of the the Athlon X2s and lower clocked core 2 processors in performance...I also have a Gigabyte GTX 260 in there too and gaming performance is pretty killer for a dated rig...Crysis runs on ultra high settings, 4X antialiasing, and 1600X1200 resolution no problem
Opterons are the shit, I have a Opteron 175 and overclocked it to 2.8ghz. It will hang in there with an Athlon 64 6000+ in benchmarks. I'm waiting for the AM3 chipset to come out for my next build.
seriously? i have the 180 and without being overclocked it is supposed to be comparable to the 4200+, and its stock frequency is 2.4ghz. so are you saying that its better than what i think it is?
Yes it's even better then the 4200+ the 4200+ has a smaller L2 cache then the opteron 180 and it's 200 mhz slower then the opteron 180. The opteron 180 is equal to the 4800+ in speed and cahce, but it's even a better overclocker, because the opteron was designed to take more abuse since it's a server cpu then the 4800+. So you may be able to get an extra 200mhz on air stable with an opteron then you would with a Athlon.
hmm cool, good to know. but, i'm still really iffy about the 939 opterons. as far as i know, they don't have all the features and power of the 940 and AM2 opterons, making it basically the same thing as the athlon 4800+. correct me if i'm wrong.
its a shame my motherboard doesn't overclock well, i was looking forward to pushing this thing to its limits but i'm pretty sure i can't. i have a 3800+ that i overclocked by 320MHz, this opteron i can't get above 5.
Your right about features the socket 939 opterons don't support features that AM2 opterons do like VR but neither does any socket 939 processor. All that started with AM2 processors with the only expection of the AM2 Semperon that doesn't support VR, but VR is a moot feature anyhow. That and the onboard memory controller which is DDR2 on the AM2 processors, but that's really it. The AM2 opterons and Athlons build on the K8 arch is the same since socket 754. The new phenoms are based on the K10.
well i wasn't referring to new features, i just read from wikipedia that the 939 opterons aren't actual opterons, at least thats what i got out of it.
but are the quad core opterons k10? whenever i get a quad core its definitely going to be an opteron and i'm just wondering if it is k10 or not
Well for one don't ever trust wikipedia, because anyone can go in their and edit stuff. They are opterons their is no diff between the old socket 940 or socket 939 opterons. The only diff is that the socket 939 opterons uses registerd ram, because it's on a mainstream socket. Yes all Quad core Opterons are on the K10 arch Opterons were the first to get the K10 arch then the Phenoms.
wikipedia isn't that bad though, they make sure many articles are checked before changed and very often you'll see them comment if an article is poorly written, has no sources, or isn't specific. they keep backups of every article in case if they're changed
It isn't bad but it isn't dead on either. I have ran across articles where they sounded good but they were off and misleading especially on anything dealing with politics or religion.
