Although there have been some remarks about Scholl's limited stage-presence, he acquits himself here in his usual heroic form. Next time he will be better, and also the time after that. He is a handsom man whose voice and demeanor were made for the opera
Very fine performance. Andreas and sounds looks good, he has filled out well. Ms. Dam-Jensen sounds quite good. I've not heard here before and am quite impressed! I'm not a fan of minimalist production, but at least the staging doesn't have them hanging upside down out of a window to express "fragility or danger." The singing is first-rate, which why one goes to or listens to opera in the first place...or it SHOULD be!
Inger Dam Jensen won the prestigieus Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1993. I wont forget her rendition of "Let the bright seraphim" which she performed in the final. I enjoyed it tremendously
I am really disappointed because of these minimalist customs and stage decorations. While they add nothing to the music, the create an alien atmospheare.
It would be fascinating to see these peaces in original baroque setting!
I think the costumes and the setting add a sense of purity/serenity and peace now that all the evil has been defeated.
It might be minimalism, but a central point of minimalism is to express as much as possible, while "doing" as little as possible. I think they succeeed well here. Besides, they are both quite good at singing. I do like Dam Jensen best here, though. Of course, she is my favorite soprano so that might be why:P
What part did Khalid El Awad play, besides looking like Michael Maniaci's double (Michael Maniaci's skinnier double)? Pardon my asking, but I have not seen any videos with him; just that bow at the end of this video. I also don't see him mentioned in the cast listed in the description. Would like to know.
Thank you so much! and by the way, palcika, don't know if you saw my comment some time ago, but I used your tip to find Scholl's "wrggle Taggle Gypsie Song" and I'll tell you, I was completely floored at the way he can sing so low; WOW! And the way that he changes his voice back and forth from low to high, and vice versa. Thought I'd take this opportunity to tell you.
Thanks again for your reply with the info on Khalid El Awad .
Ну что же.... остается пожелать Вам .....Приятного аппетита ! ;)
P.S. Кстати, в парижской постановке Андреас с таким аппетитом поглощает свой ланч, еще и умудряется классно петь при этом арию за столом hehehehehe ;)

2:44 to 3:06 = perfection. As well as the dissonance at 4:38 held extra long. Sublime performance.

They're a perfect match :) Timbre and even vibrato frequency. It's not a given even with the best singers.

veressf,
I can understand your disappointment about the pure setting. But ist the musique not reach enough ?
Have fun and enjoy Händel.
Best regards
