I saw the man here in Melbourne Australia, many years ago, he was supporting..Sonny Terry and Brownie MaGee ! It was a great gig, would love to have the chance to see him again, what a show :)) oh yeah, I also would love to see a clip of "Kings and Queens" and, another favorite... "On the Rocks"
I always loved the part of this video where he sings "so you better take warning and start treating me good". The angle from the rear really gives such emotion to the line... such vulnerability. By far my favourite performance of this song.
Anyone still searching for great new music in a similar vein should check Freebo (bassplayer on unrequited) recent albums, just great folk music and he does amazingly intimate live shows around the country all the time. Check his website freebomusic
Didn't he do this song on the M.A.S.H. tv series? He appeared on that show 3 times and he sang some of his songs. This was back around 73-74. I seem to recall the 'chuckle, chuckle, chuckle' part.
Loudon Wainwright is one of the greatest songwriters I've ever heard. His songs are poignant, funny, and beautiful. I wish I could write songs like this.
Loudon Wainwright is one of the greatest songwriters I've ever heard. His songs are poignant, funny, and beautiful. I wish I could write songs like this.
Rufas Wainwright is Loudon's son? Wow!! What a very lucky kid to have two songwriting and performing geniuses for parents. I wish I had inherited Loundon Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle's genes, but I've still done alright for myself with what I got.
as far as I know, there are no known video recordings available to collectors that feature "Kings and Queens", so you're out of luck there. Feel free to make another request, though, and I'll see what I can do.
I watched this when it went out on the BBC, and the whole concert has lived with me ever since...this performance of Unrequited to the Nth degree was the highlight.
The previous song in the set was about the fear of flying...or more accurately, the fear of crashing. Hence the "that's programming for ya" reference.
Yep - I remember taping this when I was at University when this went out simultaneously on BBC Radio and TV (Sight and Sound in Concert), but I'd never seen the TV version until today. That Loudo concert has lived with me too over the years. His pathos and comedy about his "cheesy life" is very refreshing, and I can relate to quite a few of his experiences over the years.
I work for the beeb quite regularly, and I got this concert out of the bbc library (a crappy vhs viewing copy) a couple of years ago. Perhaps they'll put the Sight and Sound series out on Beeb 4.
As it clairly says right there on the video, it was recorded in February of 78. I actually tried to figure it out. According to Wikipedia there were no commercial aviation accidents in February of 78, so as far as I know, it can't refer to a commerical crash, anyway.
Air India Flight 855 was a scheduled passenger flight that crashed in the evening of 1 January 1978 about 3 kilometers off the coast of Bombay, India. All 213 lives on board were lost.
@gulrotkake This was recorded 25th Feb in the UK. There was a crash on 11th Feb, Pacific Western Airlines Flight 314, a Boeing 737-200 at Cranbrook Airport, Canada; 42 of the 49 people on board died. Was it big news in the UK? I don't know. Odd, though, that the audience would laugh so readily at the mention of a plane crash just because there had been one recently - if that is the reason - it's not normally a light hearted topic. Anyway, thanks for posting this video, I really enjoyed it.
@gulrotkake Sorry, I should have read the earlier comments more carefully first. Have just spotted jay1lees' explanation of the plane crash reference.
@sycophanticstress The plane crash reference is to the song Loudon performed immediately before this one - I'm not Afraid of Flying (just afraid of dying) Hence his comment : That's programming for you

He's not like the other children. (Except, maybe Will Ferrell.)
Anyone remember what his dad was famous for?
And, YES I love his kids' stuff too.
