The humvee was not pressed into combat. The grunts took them on patrol themselves because they were more agile in the narrow streets of Iraq where tanks and APCs don't fit. The humvee was also quicker than tracks. Then the grunts complained the humvees were poorly armored so the brass put armor on them. Humvees were never ment to be an mini APC. Nobody makes a mini APC that can both defeat a 155mm shell or two and fit through the narrow streets of Iraq.

cont. I questioned LAV - not because I think Humvee is better. It's because LAV hardly perfect tool for anti-insurgency. RPG will go through LAV like trough butter. It can't hold heavy MG either. It cannot hold IED's well and prone to rollovers. LAV can only carry 6 infantryman at the cost of 5 Humvees (10 in case of ASLAV). There are other vehicles lot better suited to modern combat.

What exalts these vehicles as the premier off road trucks, and by far the most effective true "Utility Vehicles" is the massive amount of TORQUE their engines can produce (in excess of 400 ft-lbs at minimum).
