When Worf goes into the fissure and you see all the Worfs, if you look closely like half of them are either pacing and one of them is having a drink O.o
We won't go back, you don't know what it's like in our universe the federation is gone.. The borg is everywhere, we're one of the last ships left please. you've got to help us. NO WE WON'T GO BACK!
And Nero does say that the original timeline "was another life", and it's referenced in the movie that it's an ALTERNATE timeline once the Kelvin is destroyed, so think of the original universe as Universe A, and the one where Vulcan is destroyed as Universe B.
I prefer Universe A and hope they eventually go back to A, though maybe a DS9 movie or Voyager (and hopefully get a REAL ending to it, instead of that crap "ending"...)
@TyVulpine If you think the differences began with the Kelvin being destroyed, you're decieving yourself. :p The Kelvin looked way different from the TOS Starfleet ships I remember. I think there were already some differences between that universe and the "Prime" universe.
What i dont understand is why is there so much fuss made about temperal incursions and corrupting the timeline? If an infinite number of parallel universes exist then any change in a given timeline merely sidetracks you into a parallel universe where that change would have occurred anyway.
This episode is exactly why Star Trek XI works. I've heard several fans complain that the new movie erases the 40 years of Trek that we've grown up with. But honestly, this episodes specifically states that for every possible outcome, a reality exists. If Earth and the Feds can be assimilated by the Borg, then its perfectly fine that Vulcan gets destroyed.
I have great philosophic problems with this episode since it states, as parallel Data says, that EVERYTHING that's possible actually happens in an alternate reality.
That means that there is no free choice because every choice is taken in a separate universe. Kirk was killed by Khan? He failed rescuing whales from the 20th century and so on?
Star Trek is based on our free choice and its consequences. This episode really, really gives me great problems I haven't been able to solve so far.
I disagree. This episode doesn't say there isn't free choice, it's reiterating what Star Trek has always said: There are always possibilities. You are freely making a choice, but in another universe, some small detail convinces you to go another route. The choice was still yours, but different factors created a different outcome. The reality or path you follow is the result of the choices you make.
But wouldn't the situation you're talking about mean that all universes have been existing parallelly since the Big Bang? Some have had an outcome close to ours, some don't.
But the theory Data mentions says that the universes "split" when decisions are made -- so when the chef decides whether to make chocolate or citrone cake, the universe splits into two universes: one chocolate and one citrone one. So the situation at the time of decision-making is the same in the two universes.
@SamHawkens Also every decision in every situation keeps multiplying the alternate universes .Its kind of silly but fun. Riker dresses like a little girl somewhere over the gay space rainbow ! The gay space rainbow should have been in one of the star trek encounters .
I take it the Enterprise we see the bridge of isn't the "usual" Enterprise from other episodes, due to Riker as captain and that screen behind Wesly with the designs of the ship on.
I just finished watching this on Netflix. This is one of my favorite episodes! Almost done with the entire series (in order) =D.

I think you're looking at it too deeply, it is just entertainment at the end of the day :P

I think it means the exact opposite.
The other universes are a result of different choices and/or different consequences.
This indicates that each universe is the result of free will and chance, rather than a fixed unalterable fate where nothing you do matters.
It means you're free to choose anything, so long as you're willing to deal with the consequences.
Because you're literally creating a universe with every choice, choice becomes THE most important thing in the universe.

It's not about choice, it's about possibilities, I think it would actually confirm choice.

Geeze, why would the Riker from the parallel universe freak out because of the Borg?
They are pretty adept at time travel and could go back to a time before the Borg.
