  • Do you have a website?

What IGBT's are you using? Bus voltage? Driver?

    Thanks!

  • No, i don't have a website.

but i have more pics on flickr.

    search under Bennem1.

    My IGBT's are HG1N40N60A4D's

    bus voltage is about 300v

(240 v mains here in the UK)

and the driver is Steve Wards primary current feedback circuit.

    Mel.

  • Thank you,

The PW was about 50-80 uS

and its operating frequency with that

    8 x 2 inch top load is 385 Khz.

This coil is about 2 and half years old now

but still working fine on its original IGBTs.

  • Very nice coil Benem! Great craftsmanship.

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of PW are you using? What is the operating frequency?

  • The coupling i aim for is around 0.17

The secondary diameter is 2.75 inch

and the primary is 4.15 inch,

The secondary sits about 1 inch into the primary coil and with thoughs parameters JAVA TC calculator says its coupling is 0.17.

I coated the secondary coil with four coats of varnish, just to keep the turns in place.

This coil is about three years old now,

    but its still churning out....lol

  • what kind of coupling do you have on that thing? Very nice work. Im sure it took a lot of secondary coats to prevent fashovers.

  • Cheers Peter,

Its spark reaches nearly three times the secondary height which i'm happy about,

but there are better performing solid state coils out there than mine.

    Take a look at TAB540's coils.....they

    spark without any breakout point!

the random production of sparks from a toroid is way impressive!...IMHO

If i attempted that my transisters would surely blow!....lol

    Mel

  • very impressive!! carefully built!! one of the best sstcs ive seen!!! sorry "drsstc"has it been improved since this video was taken? not that it needs improving.. just asking!

  • Cheers!....no i haven't made any alterations to this coil since this video was made at the Derby 'thon.

Its input voltage was just under 200 volts as i was having problems with my solid state variac not giving out full mains voltage....i've since recified that.

  • This coil outperforms any one of mine! It only has an 8" secondary! Mine are 12" Very nice looking too.
