The purpose of stropping is to hone/polish the micro bevel on a tool. Therefore, when I'm stropping, I make sure to hold the tool absolutely flat against the leather to avoid any rounding/dulling of this micro bevel, which would defeat the purpose of stropping.
I was taught that the "barber's stroke/swipe" is only appropriate for hollow ground tools, like straight razors; but if this method works for you and you're avoiding rounding, then that's great.
you hold to the 30 degree angle on your carving knife too?
