Wow---FANTASTIC!!!! I'm an "original fan" from the '60s and have been a dedicated fan ever since. I've had the good fortune of meeting Davy numerous times over the years, the first time being in '75. What great guy he is, truly loves his fans. Great to see this little interview!
The Beatles were a manufactured band???? UH, REALITY CHECK: DON'T THINK SO. I don't recall the members of the Beatles showing up for an audition to make a band for a TV show. And the fact is, they were NOT playing their own music, it was done by stage producers. Let's see how many record labels today bear the names of "Tork/Nesmith/Dolenz/ or Jones as a writer; then let's see how many say Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/ or Starr. Get real. This is like comparing a skateboard to a Mercedes Benz.
Davy, as much as I like you, but The Beatles were not a manufactured band. They came together naturally, through friendship, through meeting Ringo when he was in Rory Storm. They formed naturally. You were an English actor, who was teamed up with three American guys. You were put together by Robert "Bob" Rafelson - you were the first manufactured band. But I still love you fellas to bits... :)
I love all the guys but Davy was always my favorite. He looks really skinny in this video (the 60's part). I heard he went down to 104 lbs. in order to avoid the draft.
I understand alot of what he says here. He has my respect and I think he is very talented. But what he said about the Beatles being a "manufactured band" is a bit much. I know Brian was responsible for the matching suits & shoes (not hair!)but that was just a tactic to pass early skepticism and things. It was just on the surface to avoid the rejection of those who judge based on presentation.. Beneath all that they made themselves & their own identity. They risked alot to be themselves.
At 43 seconds - I've got a KIMN presents sign similar to that one from their August concert in Denver. First time I think I've seen a video of one of those signs. They're 2'x3' so kind of neat if you can find one.
It's easy to misinterpret what Davy said re: the Beatles. Prior to manager Brian Epstein the Beatles were "Teddy Boy" scruffs ie: crude, rude, & very unpolished onstage (albeit very talented!) Their IMAGE was then changed or "manufactured" by Brian (think Pierre Cardin suits & ties!) to be more acceptable/marketable worldwide. Taken in this context David is indeed correct.
What David meant in this clip may be misinterpreted. I believe what he's referring to is the fact the Beatles WERE groomed and their IMAGE cleaned-up or "manufactured" (so-to-speak) by Brian Epstein so as to be more presentable/marketable world-wide (ie: Pierre Cardin suits& ties, etc.) Prior to Epstein the Beatles were "Teddy-Boy" scruffs - raunchy, rude, & crude (albeit very talented!) In THAT context David's comment is indeed correct.
Thing is YES the Monkees were loved & COULD play their own music but the press were right if they said that they DIDNT initially cos the 'band' had no control ; it was LATER that they did play & write more but then they became LESS successful because they were'nt great prolific writers like the Beatles who had played & wrote successful from the start so they were NOT a manufactured band like the Monkees were. The Monkees werent even hired as a band first ; they were hired as ACTORS to play a band
Davy Jones is completely wrong when he calls the Beatles a manufactured band. First of all there were no t.v producers who created the band and did auditions. Second of all they weren't created for a t.v show or assigned their instruments. They did not hire other musicians to play their instruments. Now I know the Monkees played their own instruments.
I find it extremly irritating that footage like 1:30 exists and is nto released!THATS THE ERA I WANT(68-70)Media almost always glosses over everything after HEAD,It's annoying...where is the 'Oh My My' video on dvd? Live stuff from the Goodtimers...they did concerts for Instant Replay/Present & after all these years THATS WHAT I WANT!
It must be incredible to get to see yourself 40 years ago in all your youthful innocence and comment about it. David looks like he was in the period of starving himself to avoid the draft. He wrote about it in his "ought-to-buy-ography." I was so jealous when I heard about this being shown in the UK. Thanks so much, mate, for sharing it here!
I love this, davy seems so down to earth and I laughed out loud when he said "I used to be a heartthrob now Im a coronary" hahaha! I cant wait till my hubby gets home so I can tell him that one lol!
Hi, the clip is from a UK TV show called 'Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll - The 60's Revealed', which was broadcast in December 08. I think the younger Davy footage is from 1968.
Good stuff, what show is this from? Some of that footage of the 3 guys is from the lost year, 1969. Is that footage of the younger Davy from 1968 or 1969, does anyone know?
Songs in Latin? Lolwut

I havent heard anything mentioned about his Scooby Doo days tho... he sang the Intro song for Scooby series....

Brian Epstein dressed up the Beatles look, true. But the manufacturing ended there. No one handed the Beatles their songs to sing.
