Can some natural born english spoken take a minute or two to write down all the Clapton intro Mark's speech?? I get the whole point (the dutch subtitles help) about Jack Sonni, his daughters and the last minute stand in (fantastic irony, couldn't do better tribute, both guys admire each other no doubt!) but I'd like to know the exact words. Thanks in advance and what the hell, a good chance to re-visit this amazing piece of music!!!
@blogdelsapo he says "Well you may notice that jack's not here tonight. its because he's had two baby girls. So jack i've been waiting for this moment so 600 million people could congratulate you. So we've got a stand in and i'm very sorry for this; he's a last minute stand in on my inside left. And he's never played at Wembley before. But he's the best we could do so ya know. And he's never played here before: Eric Clapton."
@MrMorganfarts Thanks, thanks!!! many thanks!!! so long wanting to know what he exactly said. really grateful Morgan farts. An great nick :)
BTW , I notice he says "He's never payed in Wembley before .. but he's played before" ("you've played before" is a way to reckon someone's ability, Mark and Chet Atkins repeat that to each other in "There'll be some changes made" fr."Neck & Neck" album) so I wonder if really Eric had never played in Wembley or wasit a irony too...Great! THX!
I've just noticed that @5:10 Mark changed lyrics from the original verse "Here comes Johnny singing I Got a Woman" to "Here comes Johnny singing Lay Down Sally"...
Haha, it's so cute! And witty too. After all it was Eric Clapton there on stage with him, not Mr. Ray Charles (R.I.P) ...
@avidbookreader Nicely spotted. MK likes to throw in these little contextual lyric changes, such as mentioning the name of the city they're currently in while signing So Far Away ("Here I am again in Roma town" for example, something he did just two nights ago). At 2:09 here he changes it a little, too, singing "Six Blade Knife," in reference to a tune on the first Dire Straits album.
You are a fuckin idiot. Eric Clapton has NEVER been a member of the Straits. To say he may Be a gifted guitarist is a UNDER STATEMENT. YOU ARE A ASS THAT KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC.
To be honest I think the first solo from Clapton was too much "blues" and too little "walk of life". He may be a gifted guitar player, he's not entirely right for Dire Straits.
@tommiechem that is true, the mandela 88 concert, live at knebworth, and other knopfler performances where clapton was involved didnt really seem to sound like knopfler or dire straits at all. but clapton and knopfler are still gods at guitar and always will be
@BrissoParrothead No doubt Clapton is a supreme guitarist but youre right, not a great fit. Clapton seems to turn up in things like this and sometimes he showboats a bit. But great to see him and Knopfler on the same stage!
Slowhand blew me away with his 3 so fuckin' awesome guitar solos on my first ever favorite song as a child!!! lol Kinda wish MK sneaked a solo in too, nonetheless two guitar masters (and my 2 all time favorite guitarists!!!) sharing the stage together, FANTASTIC!!! I wonder if Clapton learned the Dire Straits setlist songs in under a half hour lol. The man can play and solo to any song you give to him!!!
Best ever intro of a rock god! Makes me smile every time I hear Knopfler introduce Clapton by saying, "we had to get a stand-in........he's the best we could do".

Clapton could drop his guitar down a stairwell in a subway station and it would sound good!

@tommiechem
funny, that's just what I like about it. Kind of a bluesy spice in the major key of the song. Very nice.
mfrieauff 7 months ago
@tommiechem Sorry but this song can't be more bluesy, a I-IV-V progression in E, I for one loved EC's solo, I wished they'd play together again...
sirgerry 6 months ago
@tommiechem i'm gonna have to agree with you. although he is a great player, way to bluesy

None of the thousands in attendance seemed to complain. EC was cool.
