I like Tom's backup too. He gives a solid backup without taking over. I'll see about getting a clip showing his backup, but probably not soon.
I've played with Tom for a while and would say he puts the emphasis the bass note with sometimes only a bit of the chord. Sounds great and puts the beat where you'd tap you foot.

Leather Britches is a classic on fiddle. If you decide to learn it, you'll find out that it's a fun tune to play on fiddle.
Maybe you can work up a guitar version.
