I've been a fan of this band since 1984 and gay, straight, or celebate, I couldn't care less about Michael Stipe's sexuality. If you do, then you probably have some hang-ups about your own and can't enjoy art for art's sake. They've always BEEN a "lefty" band, supporting Greenpeace and other social/environmental causes, which, again, doesn't bother me at all. If you can't listen to the music FOR the music, then don't.

Micheal Stipe makes me not want to like REM. He made them into a gay, yuppie, lefty, PC band which has made many back off from REM.

@knightschwartz All of them made the band what it is, was, and what it will be remembered for. As for Michael, he wrote the lyrics. Just by reading and analyzing his brilliant, metaphoric, lines you can tell the man like many other people, has been through a LOT of shit. He expresses his own internal pain through his beautiful, often vague lyrics. As for him being gay, im not sure what that has to do with it. R.EM. is the greatest, geekiest, deepest band ive ever had the honor of listening to.

@987m654e321 who knows, people need to stop judging others. If I was that closed minded I would get rid of half my music. granted I would not listen to a Nazi punk band. I would rather listen to a lefty PC band than a band that is closed mined and spreads hate and judgement. When I found out Michel Stipe may be Gay or BI. I was like so what let us listen to the great music he and his band mates created. I don't label people MS is human like the rest of us and a great artist at that.
