  • really great!!!!! bravi!!!

  • 3:45-3:47 epic performance.

  • I never get tired of this.

  • this is fucking unreal. damn.

  • MERAVIGLIOSI!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bravo bravo encore encore

    brilliant

  • @lty2k84 Back to your bridge, troll.

  • @lty2k84 ...that seemed unnecessary. If you don't like it (which is unfortunate) then skip it.

  • hey the beginning is in the same key as the ambassadors of harmony 76 trombones

  • Muito bom...

  • Reminded to glee stuff

  • @Obnavo if you're trying to say what I THINK you're trying to say, get. the fuck. out.

  • @digglytracks then if you dont know what the heck I'm talking about you should keep things to your self.....grow up

  • @Obnavo the only reason why I didn't know what you were talking about was because your first comment had horrid grammar.

  • from 0:31-1:07 my jaw was droping every time I heard a different chord....WOW!!!

  • Words cannot describe how much I wish 1:07 was an authentic cadence

  • how do i join this chorus or tryout?

  • @c93194 email join(at)westminsterchorus(dot)org

  • Who is that clown that looks like he is going to explode throughout the whole song, and is camper than richard simmons, you see right at the end he is behind conductor about to cry, he ruined it for me, stook out like a soar thumb, everyone else was great he tried way way way too hard

  • @larkin2404 You have to remember to divide the emotion by 10 for the people in the crowd. Probably didn't look too ridiculous.

  • @mattdre88 It did, I was there. Now I'm a barbershopper myself, and you have to get into it for it to be a good show, but he just went too far.

  • Flat out amazing...love this!

  • This is AMAZING! I am really blown away!

  • @darklordsexypants To be fair, I didn't really look at the video to see which person you were referring to--I see him now. That might be a tad too much, LOL. I'm just programmed to search barbershop videos for "barbershop haters" and tell them off. It's kind of my thing :P Your comment led me to believe you were just ignorant towards the style, but clearly this is not the case.

"It CRUSHES American Idol, boys. Barbershop is where it's at." --Joe Connelly

  • 5 people had their sound turned off.

  • i tried to hold out that note from 0:35-1:07 and i almost passed out. staggered breathing or really huge lungs?

  • @sportsfan050 I have no clue o.o...probably staggered breathing. Pulling it in one breath would be like superhuman!

  • @violinwesley Tim Waurick could do it. XD

  • @sportsfan050 Staggered breathing most likely, however, they have HUGE lungs anyway

  • I swear @0:42 I felt like the lights in the background grew more radiant every time they changed chords xD

  • Your the tops!

  • 3:28 TJ BROWNNN

  • @darklordsexypants (continued) So, what looks "exaggerated" to us looks perfectly normal to those at a farther distance. That is the goal, and that's one of the reasons why Westminster's presentation scores were through the roof on this song.

    Happy Barbershopping :)

  • @darklordsexypants First of all, your name is funny. Made me lol.

On to important matters, no one in this chorus was over doing a thing. I'm not sure how much you know about barbershop--I am not accusing you of not knowing anything, I just don't know how much you DO know--but facial expression is one of the keys to excellent barbershop singing. What we are seeing up close via the cameras, the judges and audience are seeing from a while away since the chorus is on stage....

  • So many shivers every time I watch this :). Wish I could hear them live!

  • That tag at the beginning alone was enough to win them the Championships.

  • @Esandcircle01 No kidding. I giggle every time I watch from 0:50-0:53. Nowhere will you hear or see cooler dynamics simultaneously than in barbershop choruses.

  • D# dim not C# before the A7/E

hmm. too loud to for an overtone it seems?

  • I made the most incredulous face at :42. DANG. and then they kind of never stop the epicness from there.

  • Comment removed

  • [@ the intro] Who the hell arranges this stuff and HOW????????

  • and then came the chills...

  • does anyone kno the chords from :33 to 1:07?

  • Comment removed

  • @smartguy906 F7/A -> A -> C# dim -> A7/E -> Db7/Ab -> G7 . and then here comes that big brass band!

    i think

  • wow!!!!!!! really sounds good, so smooth, they deserve the title

  • I like the guy who does the first flip at 0:20 the best haha. He's so expressive for the entire thing

  • 5 people must be VM members...

  • Westminster sure likes to sing about parades! South Rampart Street, Strike Up The Band, Mardi Gras...

  • @Jastro88 As Sound of the Rockies would say, "Why does every chorus sing about a parade, a band with trombones, or a Mardi Gras charade?" :P

  • WHO DISLIKED THIS?!

  • @suzi32 Vocal Majority :)

  • I just keep watching this. WOW!

  • 0:33 - 1:06 is actually Jesus singing!

  • So that's where Chuck Norris's vocal cords went......

  • The final stomp was in perfect sync. Just one massive BOOM!

  • These guys are amazing.

  • I love the smiles at the end, as if you can read their minds, "yeah we just did WORK!"

    PRICELESS!

  • i've asked this quite a while ago...but do anyone have a score of this arrangement or know where can it be bought? i've heard that it's arranged specially by someone....

  • AWESOME!!

  • Who's the guy with the spikey blonde hair in the front row who consistently makes the most hilarious gestures ever?

  • There has to be a name for what they're doing from approx. 0:40-1:10...eargasm

  • @Runnadaroad The barbershop name for it is, I believe, "chord worshiping".

  • Comment removed

  • a quartet from VM disliked this.

  • This is how MEN sing

  • I'M GOING TO BE IN THIS ONE DAY

  • the countertenor section knocked my socks off

  • @ganekelioque Countertenor section? In barbershop, it's bass, baritone, lead, and tenor. So do you mean tenor section?

  • @supersingerevan i really just thought there was more than four parts, i thought they mightve split the tenors. and the higher guys would be counters of course lol

  • @ganekelioque No, they would be disqualified if they were singing more than four parts. Those are overtones you're hearing ;) Also, a "countertenor" is a very rare occurrence in the male voice, where there is an actual anomaly in the vocal chords. I doubt they found that many real countertenors.

  • @supersingerevan lol thanks for informing me ahaha, i didnt know the rules of the amount of parts they were allowed to sing. i was just listenin to this pretty awesome choir :-D

  • @ganekelioque They ARE pretty freaking awesome.

  • @supersingerevan Countertenors aren't rare at all dude. My highschool prides itself on males carrying the bulk of the soprano part... And no, it's not an anomaly of the vocal chords, it's practiced falsetto. If you listen to the countertenors from Chanticleer or King's Singers speak, there is nothing girly or anomalous with the voice. It's all discipline. Also, basses make the best countertenors.

  • @Icyveins906 Oh, your HIGH SCHOOL says those are countertenors. Well, that definitely tops my college professors. There's a bit of controversy, and different schools of thought on the matter, but I would call what you are referring to as "male sopranos" or a "falsettist". If you want examples of REAL countertenors, look at Russell Oberlin, or the soprano in m-pact.

  • @supersingerevan You may be confusing a countertenor with a male alto or soprano...or even a castrato (I certainly hope not). Countertenors generally do not have any vocal abnormalities, and simply have a practiced and reinforced falsetto via their 'chest voice.' If you're referring to Oberlin, he's akin to a male soprano I mentioned above, or someone like Maniaci, whose larynx never fully developed.

  • @Protomagi Again, there are different schools of thought on the subject, but my professors teach that someone with a practiced falsetto is called male alto or soprano, or a "falsettist", and countertenors are the men with vocal abnormalities.

  • @supersingerevan I think you're being too adamant about the terminology in this case. This is akin to someone lecturing someone else for calling vocal folds "vocal chords" instead. The common vernacular won't dissipate overnight. They're just viewed as synonymous, so don't worry about it as much. Also, I have a degree in music education and this is the first I've heard of a "falsettist" :P

  • @supersingerevan the last chord before the big B major chord got 5 notes [two Bs of an octave (bass n lead) holding; D natural for tenors; F natural and G natural for baris (correct me if im wrong cuz i don't have the score)]

but hell yea who cares! that chord rang the wax out of my ear n i stood up and clapped in front of my computer anyways

  • @iwanabana Methinks you hear an overtone ;)

  • anyone got a score for the arrangement?

  • To edwards21416 You can bet there are guys in this chorus who were public school boys. The Barbershop Harmony Society it loaded with boys and men from every walk of life. There isn't a chorus in the society who wouldn't welcome a young singer from any school with open arms. What you're seeing here is the cream of the cream of the crop. These guys got here by virtue of ability and above all hard work and dedication. But anyone who loves singing and performing can find a place in the society.

  • bet there arent any public school boys in it ,money still buys your way

  • @edwards21416 You might consider which kind of music is commercially successful in 2011 (i.e. rap, hip-hop, and NOT this), and where those musicians come from. I sure that these guys, in contrast, drive themselves to gigs, don't have managers and PA's, and have to nickel-and-dime their way to avoid financial collapse on a regular basis. They perform for the love of singing in a group, and they're terrific at it. Try listening again!

  • @edwards21416 I don't have the hard numbers, but seeing as I went to public school and sing in Westminster I can attest that at least one of us didn't go to private school. In fact, most of us went to public school. That's how we recruited each other...by calling up our friends from high school or college, etc...

  • @edwards21416 you would lose that bet

  • gosh. i'd so love to get a copy of the score...

  • They take themselves WAY too seriously.

  • @Compooky121 is that another way of saying YOU wouldn't muster the dedication and effort to achieve at this level? maybe it doesn't motivate you, maybe it doesn't even entertain you; that's fine. but please don't denigrate the accomplishment of others to serve your own ego.

  • @EnergyPimps Lol chill bro.

  • @EnergyPimps Lol chill bro. I'm not "denigrating" anything mr. big words.

  • @Compooky121 I doubt if they take themselves seriously but they do take their music and performance seriously. You don't get to this level unless you do.

  • Man are they good!!!!

  • the post...good god the post, it was BEAUTIFUL!!

  • I really love this kind of music!!

  • This is pretty darn HOT! BRAVO!

  • WOW!!!

  • AWSOMEEE!!!..keep it up guys!!!

  • Lol the soloist last year got his head shaved :P nice haircut dude

  • @yfjameslo haha thanks man. Luckily it grew back....some of it anyway :P

  • OMG!!! It's MR. RODICH!!!

    That is awesome.

  • Yes it can be veryexciting to hear an ALL MALE chorus sing - and well! BUT where has the amateur status gone??? I find most of today's chorus' sporting too much dance and stick which distracts. I would like to hear them stand and deliver. JUST THAT - Stand still, show us good facial involvement and present a Fully Expanded sounds that send chills up and down my spine... This one, when I close my eyes and listen, leaves me empty. JUST being honest.....

  • @egraber61 Type in, Westminster Chorus It Only Takes A Moment. You'll find they do "stand and deliver" quite well.

  • Comment removed

  • @egraber61 @egraber61 These guys could ALSO show you what you prefer and in a professional manner!! It's a good thing to travel many highways, not simply to stay stuck in a one-way lane...

  • @egraber61 If you watch the ballad "It Only Takes a Moment" or any of the Choir of the World sets...we don't do a lot of movement, but more facial expressions. You also have to remember that this video segment is a part of Barbershop Chorus contest, where we are solely judged by presentation (also singing, musicality). Every barbershop chorus' does this dance like choreo to their up-tune because it's a part of the competition.

  • 0:39 My choir would die in the ass if they had to do those chord changes.

  • this is amazing!!!

  • Comment removed

  • such a weird vowel @ 2:06 COME ON NOW ..but I love it

  • @manof1000voices its supposed to be a southern accent, poking fun at the Dallas Vocal Majority

  • WOW!!!...blown away!!

  • jesus wept. this was amazing! From a Sweet Adeline, may I just say DAYUM.

  • OMG 2 peoples not knows to sing!!!

  • BEST BEST BEST CORD AT 0:52

  • @deathrock16 It's called a "chinese 7th chord"

  • That was wonderful!

  • Mardi Gra's coming up, everyone! Better get as animated as these cool cats with beads, dance moves, and colorful presentation to boot!

  • wow. just....wow.

  • Not bad, but you're gonna have to up your game to win in Wales this year. Its ON...

  • @bagzet Westminster is not attending Llangollen this year...

  • Can't get enough of this choir!

  • ver very good job guys!!!!!!!

  • Amazing...as it was live in Philly!!!

  • hells yea; i know most of these guys don't come from Westminster; but to know they represent my city; just crazy to think about.........

  • It's nice and all but a tiny tad on the trained monkeys' side for my taste. Plus the noise is anoying. I guess it works in a competition after watching 15 choirs you surely thank this kind of performance, but it doesn't stand on its own IMO. I like barbershops from time to time but am not a hardcore fan.

  • @Elsupertonto you need to be there. The sound they produce is a lot different from your stereotypical barbershop chorus. the sound is clean, bright and controlled, not bellowed like most bbshp choruses...

  • @XarionGod Unfortunately, he is correct. The average age in the Society is currently 68 years old. However, more guys like this will do wonders to help correct that.

  • @ZMarquart89 oh, I'm not debating the fact that the average age is 68 haha. I was just pointing out that the number of young barbershoppers is much larger than most people think.

  • @XarionGod The really sad thing here, is that all these young men in this chorus probably out number the number of people their same age in the audience.

I play theatre pipe organ concerts, and those of us on the concert circuit deal with the same problem...concert attendance average age: Deceased.

  • @RonRizzy I hear you. Nothing would make me happier than to see more young blood in the Society.

  • Amazing performance. As someone earlier mentioned, that guy with the cartoon face was kind of scary.

  • OMG this choir is beast :D

  • GODLIKE

  • I just pissed myself! This is amazing. I love when guys can sing and are also cute :) haha good job gentlemen!

  • At what point does a physical plan become choreography, and at what point are great choruses no longer considered great barbershop because they're not dance troupes? I'm a newbie to Barbershop and I already miss the old days.

  • @charliehtube Was this is response to someone else's comment? I was watching the video (for the millionth time--lol) and your comment perplexed me.

  • I've have been a member in S. P. E. B. S. Q. S. A. before. This is a remarkably young chorus. Most of the Barbershop members now are like 70. I'm 44, but I'm a young 44. I wish I had a chorus like this to sing with

  • @dantescratch First of all, your statement about the age of current barbershoppers is a common misconception. Second, if you really are still interested, I'm sure there's a Barbershop Harmony Society chorus very near you (assuming you're still in the US/Canada). If you go to the BHS website, you can use the "Find a Chorus or Chapter" function to find the chorus nearest you.

  • so who is the oldest member?

    is he like 23?

This is such a young chorus!

  • Comment removed

  • The white lines on the stage are to tell the chorus members where the curtain will fall.

  • the conductor is my chorus teacher :)

  • Fantastic discipline and hellishly good breath control all round.

  • Man... Just came from listening to the VM's silver medal performance. No disrespect to the VM, but these guys are on a whole different level.

  • @BarbershopHero No disrespect? Really? Whole different level? Your ignorance is showing. Westminster is terrific. The VM is the VM.

  • can anyone help with a question... are there any rules that involve the markings on the stage floor? at 2:05 there's a white line accross the front of the risers. are there any rules saying singers cannot cross that line or anything like that? or are they just randomly there?

  • @timmylead That marking on stage is where the stage curtain goes, it has nothing to do with rules or anything.

  • Absolutely thrilling!

  • what's the flash at 3:46?

  • @LilKroog It's an old college marching band trick -- you take an Instamatic camera flash cube (the kind that pops onto the top of the camera and has 4 sides to it), carefully stick a piece of toothpick in 1 of the holes on the top. Hold it hidden in your hand, and when you press the toothpick, that section of the flash cube goes off. You can do this 4 times with each cube.

  • @pywacket12 actually its just a disposable camera

  • @TenorJOE

    hahahaha

  • I must admit that even after listening to the Vocal Majority, Ambassadors of Harmony, and other greats many times, I have never heard a chorus lock this well. Westminster might as well be a 60-70 man quartet from what my ear can hear. That said, I wonder if Westminster's lower numbers, younger member age, or experience with non-barbershop music helps them achieve that. Could anyone with more barbershop/singing education tell me if I'm talking out my hind end?

  • @BlackLotus1786 Yup. Anyone who says that music can teach him/her nothing is a fool. All music can teach you a new skill. Classical music requires a lot of use of the soft palette and operatic production while jazz can focus the front. Asian throat singing makes you really fine-tune your resonant space. All of this together can turn a vocalist into a flexible machine. The last one doesn't apply to these guys, but it helped me.

  • @BlackLotus1786 A full diet of barbershop singing cannot make a complete musician. Exposure to other forms of vocal production and other harmonic structures can only strengthen the tuning of barbershop chords. Although I feel strongly that the barbershop choruses should only sing barbershop chords in competitions, it would be a big mistake for any chorus or quartet to only explore those chordings and not experience other harmonies.

  • @thelonearranger1 Restrict BBS chords only to competition? Outside of official (eg: BHS) or exclusive BBS events, should BBS choruses (and quartets?) only perform totally non-BBS arrangements? or just non-competitive ones? BBS 'sound' evolved because of satisfaction in both audience and singer, engendered by that special 'lock and ring'; audiences at our quartet's non-BHS gigs and open mic performances sure seem to like it. As for other influences: absolutely! enjoy and learn whenever possible.

  • @BlackLotus1786 The Westminster chorus performed "Lux Arumque" which has extremely difficult harmonies that most choirs cannot achieve, and that really keeps them on their toes musically.

  • I need a new pair of pants

  • Great Actions..... Super Sound...... Wonderful Chorus

  • Fora do comum , muito bom
