NEVER underestimate the Germans. Their technological prowess is proven. Panther and Tiger series tanks? Dominated WWII to the point that every allied armor soldier "thought" he saw a Tiger. Leopard-2? Totally modern tank and whose Krupp gun, BTW, was used in US M1 Abrams tanks. Me-262? First operational jet fighter in history and caused great havoc. Mercedes? BMW? Some of the best cars in the world. German quality is not in question... but they (as no one) can take on the entire world at once

Sure this tank is one of the best, but so is the Abrams. Does it really matter which one is the best? Does it make you feel good if it's the one your country uses? They're both great and each has its little advantages over the other. And as long as they're not fighting eachother, is doesn't even matter. Talibans don't even have freaking tanks.

@SirChubblesSteen auctually the germans and americans collaborated on 'the future tank' in the 1960's, that tank then had more features then modern tanks now, but went wayyy overbudget and the german/american partnership broke off - with it both nations took what they learnt from each other - the abrams an leopard are the results of that.
@toketokepass All correct, except of one part. Germany took nothing from Americans, because a German prototype was tested in US without Germans themselves. US could test, evaluate and research all of its systems and subsystems. Germans never touched the American prototype from this joint project.

It is not surprising that after MPAT rounds proved themselves a failure against soft targets Rheinmetall stopped their production and now develops a new dedicated HE-FRAG round, which will be tested in Afghanistan in 2011... and after than it will be adopted by US company making ammo for Abrams. Is it "Raytheon"? I can't remember right now...
These kind of statements remind me of the MiG-29 supporters out there who talk about how much their aircraft "kicks ass"

In the american corean war, you had big problems with russian(german researched) plains, your P80 shooting star was inferior to the me 262. So an america gave the order to rebuild old me 262 parts and you flew again with it. Same with tanks, gas powered tanks was a german idea. The M1-A2 and the Leopard is basically the same tank up to 60% completion when the common relations for building a Main battle Tank for the UN was disbanded. The states went their own way with their part of the up to then designed tank chassi and the germans kept on working on theirs.

Chile just bought some up-dated second-hand early block F-16's from the Netherlands to counter the MiG-29's of Peru.
From what I have read, they feel confident that they can prevail over Peru now.

In Cold War Era other countries were buying downgraded stuff, just because they couldn't buy anything else. All those countries were anti-American ones... so they were buying from USSR, whatever..

Initial versions of MiG-29 were much superior to first versions of F-16. Actually it was designed from the beginning as anti-F-16 and stunning results of Luftwaffe excersizes just proved that. But today fighters are more in competition of electronic suites and weapons than as aircrafts themselves.
So, in theoretical Chile's Falcons against Peru Fulcrums everything comes down to training, budjet and tactics, because as planes F-16 A/B and MiG-29SE are very..

@rampking1 The Bundeswehr is not operating them. The Canadians rented some of our spare Leopard 2 two or three years ago and liked them so much they're buying them now. Do a search for "Leopard Afghanistan" and you'll find some footage.
It's true, we (the Luftwaffe) do not have aircraft capable of transporting MBTs, but maybe the canadians did what our forces always do when there's heavy stuff to transport down there: rent an ukrainian Antonov. That's how we got our heavy howitzers there.

Abrams are constantly criticized for using D.U. (Depleted Uranium) in shells and armor which couses cancer and deformation.
And also maintance for Abrams is a disaster it's also waaay to expensive and hard to produce. Leo can be diagnosed over a laptop and you can change it's engine in 3 mins.
i agree with you on the Abrams performance in the sand. they suck up so much sand it aint funny, and i drive the abrams for a living, i know it up and down. they realy are gas guzzling too.
Also the barrel goes up after a shot to vent all the gases in barrel, this keeps the barrel cooler and cleaner. The barrel is restored back on target automatically before any gunner could possibly reload a shot anyway.
M1 is faster but has shorter an much shorter range plus guns on gasoline which explodes very easily.
Both tanks are better in different ways and we aint ganna know which is better unless there ever pitched against each other. So stop bitching and appreciate their awesomeness.

The leopard's barrel IS longer which increases the velocity of the shot as the shell can gain greater velocity from the expansion of the gas's in the barrel before decompression at the break. Sure it does give greater stopping power but the fact is DU rounds dont need more power the only good point is there is less travel time for the shot decreasing the chance of missing.

It is more likely because we shoot depleted uranium which do to it's extreme density does not have a high rate of drop unlike conventional rounds. They also happen to be heavily radio active....
Depleted Uranium used in weaponry is not highly radioactive the radiation it emits, alpha, can be blocked by a piece of paper. so its not because of that.
In terms of other radioactive materials, your are correct. In respect to those depleted Uranium is quite week. Your claim that it can be blocked by something like a piece of paper, however, is false. Pure DU is more then radioactive enough to cause functionality issues in major organs, and cause cancer. DU used in munitions, however, is not pure. It is about 99% pure, the other percent being split by much more active forms of (what some might call naturally enriched) uranium.
Bullshit, there no rifled gun in ANY version of the Leo2, but the A6 does use a longer gun, L55 instead of L44 (the latter being the gun used on the Abrams as the M256).

no its not, the Abrams is the fastest tank on earth capable of going over 70 miles an hour. It has a jet engine. They have to put a speed reducer on it though, so the engine doesn't destroy the transmission and drive train.
I know, saying I like anything American will get me thumbs down, but I think the choice of a gas turbine power plant for the Abrams was the best engine choice for a tank. The power to weight ratio, durability, less moving parts (think about it) and most importantly, you can use WHATEVER fuel will burn, just change the atomization nozzles and you can run an Abrams on Diesel, Jet fuel, Gas, Kerosene, alcohol etc.. which comes in handy when fuel supplies become compromised in war.

@rampking1 At least at excersizes they were on equal terms. Top equipped vs top equipped. Put F-15/16 without radar against fully equipped MiG-29 and guess what will happend. Of course it is not your fault that Yugoslavia flew with cripped, downgraded, underequipped MiGs... But you know what? Celtics are soccer champions in Scotland year after year, just because they don't have competition there. And when they come down to UEFA, they usually get their asses kicked :)))

From what I have read, they feel confident that they can prevail over Peru now.

F.e. combination of HAF F-16s/ERIEYE proved to be superior against French Rafales/French AWAC, during joint excersizes in Mediterranean.
Only having data from air battles in three such scenarios we could safely say today which fighter is actually better.
Fact also is that US AF never faced an equal opponent since times of Korea and Vietnam. In such enviroment it is easy to set combat records.

Plus the rules of engagement restraints placed on the Bundeswehr by the German government pretty much keep their soldiers from going on the offensive.
The country of Chile just aquired some surplus Leopard II's from Deutschland and lets just say they are no longer concerned about the Russian tanks in Peru now.

@rampking1 The Bundeswehr is not operating them. The Canadians rented some of our spare Leopard 2 two or three years ago and liked them so much they're buying them now. Do a search for "Leopard Afghanistan" and you'll find some footage.
It's true, we (the Luftwaffe) do not have aircraft capable of transporting MBTs, but maybe the canadians did what our forces always do when there's heavy stuff to transport down there: rent an ukrainian Antonov. That's how we got our heavy howitzers there.

The Ehrenkreuz für Tapferkeit in Gold (Golden Honorary Cross for Bravery) has been awarded to US helicopter crews who rescued wounded german soldiers from an ambush in Afghanistan under enemy fire. The medal is relatively new... it's been given to the troops after a petition to the german parliament to reinstate the Iron Cross.

This doesn't tell me anything...I've read accounts of Tiger Panzers getting hit over a dozen times without being disabled, including tank rounds. All you see is the concussion and smoke, nothing else.

and it was in some serious military magazine they tested the 3 tanks you mentioned and Leo won i think T-90 was second but I'm not sure.
Abrams are constantly criticized for using D.U. (Depleted Uranium) in shells and armor which couses cancer and deformation.
And also maintance for Abrams is a disaster it's also waaay to expensive and hard to produce. Leo can be diagnosed over a laptop and you can change it's engine in 3 mins.

Also the barrel goes up after a shot to vent all the gases in barrel, this keeps the barrel cooler and cleaner. The barrel is restored back on target automatically before any gunner could possibly reload a shot anyway.
M1 is faster but has shorter an much shorter range plus guns on gasoline which explodes very easily.
Both tanks are better in different ways and we aint ganna know which is better unless there ever pitched against each other. So stop bitching and appreciate their awesomeness.

The leopard's barrel IS longer which increases the velocity of the shot as the shell can gain greater velocity from the expansion of the gas's in the barrel before decompression at the break. Sure it does give greater stopping power but the fact is DU rounds dont need more power the only good point is there is less travel time for the shot decreasing the chance of missing.

Read this and then say again why abrams is better ? Leopard 2 A6 use 120mm L55 caliber gun which is 25% longer then M1A2 120mmL44 gun, therefore gives 25% more punch power, Leopard 2A6 can engage enemy from 4000m compare M1A2 3000m,
secondly Leopard 2 A6(62 tons) armor has more protection then M1A2(67tons), because it use more angle armor, front side use Arc shape armor, good protection for top attack and bottom(for mines),

haha! barrel length has nothing to do with power, the leopards barrel is not 25% longer anyway, and the leopards barrel goes up after each shot affecting the accuracy alot. The accuracy is a little bit less than the abrams because the barrel is shorter than the Abrams
Abrams has the same arcs that the Leopard does to avoid damage. I've been in and around each tank for U.S-German joint exercises back in '04. I love both tanks but I like the abrams more just because I grew up with it

The Leopard uses a longer, rifled version and the M1A2 uses the shorter, smooth-bored version. They used to claim it was to protect sensitive electronics on guided missiles. It is more likely because we shoot depleted uranium which do to it's extreme density does not have a high rate of drop unlike conventional rounds. They also happen to be heavily radio active....

In terms of other radioactive materials, your are correct. In respect to those depleted Uranium is quite week. Your claim that it can be blocked by something like a piece of paper, however, is false. Pure DU is more then radioactive enough to cause functionality issues in major organs, and cause cancer. DU used in munitions, however, is not pure. It is about 99% pure, the other percent being split by much more active forms of (what some might call naturally enriched) uranium.

wtf do you not understand about the abrams having its speed reduced? I said nothing about km/h. I am well aware of the fact that 45 mph is over 70km/h. THE ABRAMS WITHOUT ITS SPEED REDUCER CAN DO OVER 70MPH. Again for the 3rd time they have its speed reduced so the tank cannot go so fast as to have its drive train and trany blown out. Also military training is bullshit, real rounds are not used.

Its a fact that the Abrams can do over 70mph. it has a jet engine you fool. jet engines go faster and faster until they cant go anymore. The Abrams has a speed reducer so that the engine doesn't destroy the drive train, I just fucking told you that. Plus the Abrams can run on Jet fuel, Diesel, Gas, Alcohol, Kerosene, and other fuels.

I know, saying I like anything American will get me thumbs down, but I think the choice of a gas turbine power plant for the Abrams was the best engine choice for a tank. The power to weight ratio, durability, less moving parts (think about it) and most importantly, you can use WHATEVER fuel will burn, just change the atomization nozzles and you can run an Abrams on Diesel, Jet fuel, Gas, Kerosene, alcohol etc.. which comes in handy when fuel supplies become compromised in war.
