You'd be surprised my friend . An oven thermometer can be tested in your oven . Not sure about doing that with your bbq gauges . I paid alot of money for these gauges to have them read the same as the ones I pulled off . I noticed that the temperature at the bottom grate is 15 to 25 degrees hotter then the tel-tru says . That is due to the way the inside of the smoker is designed , not necessarily that the gauges are wrong . Gauges are just a reference point . Gotta know what your doing though.

So an oven thermometer from WalMart is more accurate than a Tel-Tru thermometer on you multi-thousand dollar BBQ Pit?......really?
