@everyone on here. Quit hating. thats all anyone does. I know damn well I could go through every post. Go to your page. Watch your videos. I'm pretty positive you don't have a talent near him. NO you wouldn't see this back in the day in the buddy rich band. if any of you are drummers. You'd know bass isn't a primary object in big band. Let alone double bass. Yes he does take it over boar
@paisteguy799 hahaa. I can't believe someone could talk bad about this. lmfao. Its marco!!!! if he were in front of you. You wouldn't touch a drum stick. You probably say you will. But you wouldn't.
his feel for big band is actually pretty good but goddam hes playing the bass drum waaaaaay too loud, its driving me crazy, does he know about feathering?
First off...Congrats on everyone who has stuck with drumming. Next, there is room for EVERYONE at the top, says Dave Weckl on his early video effort from back in the day. If I want to record a song with a harmonica, a salad mixer, and a garage can I can call it soup salad jazz rock and metal and it would be my right. Free country. Such is life in the Americas. you fucking loser big band/bop dorks need to stick to what you know best...squatting on cocks and accepting piss facials...I guess you didn't happen to notice the glaringly obvious "mm" on each players podium...this video is supposed to highlight marco...he's one of the top players on the planet, he more than knows what he's doing and if this wasn't his show he would be doing exactly what all you little pussies are whining about...quit trolling and please please please kill yourselves...

so ive been playin listenin to jazz for 11 years but ok, and you consider what marco is doing good its too heavy too brash for jazz, and manifest I think you wanna live in iraq then and rise to power there where u can tell people what not to do on the internet but this is america son , freedom of speech , I cant stand guys defending bullshit jazz and tryin to pass it off as equal to the real thing to each their own.
@manifestgtr I guess you're a Marco fan, OK, but everything you write just underscores the criticism; all drumming is supposed to highlight the arrangement, not the individual. Probably the reason why the band didn't play up to potential was because the drummer was stroking his own at their expense and they knew it. Go back to the porn sites and stroke and swallow to your hearts content.
I get it, really, and I have nothing against "MM" (except here); but if it's for drummers, I'll consider it instructive if this cut is under the sub-heading "Don't Do It Like This".
yeah this guy was hitting shit and being fast for the sake of it,. his right did keep tempo but the left hand is suppose to comp what either horns or the bass is doing it sounds like hes just hittin shit with his left hand , his comping ability is awful, and hes too loud with the left hand , his solo was technical but it lost me he lacks the finesse and improv skills to play jazz., he shud stick to double bass noise music.
Technical ability, yes. Good for his ego, maybe. The horn section should have stopped playing and kicked him off the stage. Even the solo at the end just did not belong. Maintain the pulse, stay UNDER the band and DRIVE. Marco failed.
@KarateMastR57 Go listen to any of Buddies performances of this and tell me he doesn't smoke Miinnemann; I'll tell you you're either nuts or you just don't have an ear for music. Maybe someone else knocked Marco's performance and you got all pissed. I just saw him play with U.K. a few months ago; great drummer but it just goes to show you how even greater Rich was. Even the band sounds sluggish here and I can hear fuck-ups everywhere. Not with Buddy behind the skins; that band is tighter than...
Disappointing, but then again, nobody is Buddy. Marco clearly doesn't have the feel for big band jazz. Good thing he's an amazing rock/fusion drummer still.
Well who would want to be a "big band drummer" anyway? Considering no one gives a flying fuck about big band music that's a good thing ...He did an amazing job making a Big Band solo sound modern without completely abandoning the feel....I don't think he fell short at all
@PUSHMUSICNY When you say "no one gives a flying fuck about big band music" your speaking for yourself and yes the majority of people but then again listen to what the majority of people listen to: shit. The top 40 is the worst music out there. Good music is good music whether it be big band or any other genre. If you feel Minnemann is great then the fact that he can't play this music nearly as good as the great big band drummers should make you repect them more not less. You're closed minded.
Another testimony to the challenges of playing drums in a big band. Marco is an awsome drummer but falls short here, mainly because of the sluggish, heavy-handed swing feel. "Swing" is a style which demands a lightness, a push and at the same time a special kind of energy. Nothing to do with volume but with understanding of a style of music. Same applies other way around, light handed swing drummers often fail to play rock, funk or R&B grooves with the right feel.
Is that a drum key sticking way above the lug on the left side of the snare, doesn't look like the strainer lever. You would think it might be in the way up like that.
As a big band drummer, my experience tells me the reason the band misses the cue at 2:21 is Marco's fault. He's of absolutely NO support to the rest of the band! He plays his fills like he's playing to a click trak - not to a big band. These guys need a clear sense of the 1 in order to come in solid. Good drummer he is, big band drumer he is not! Sorry!
The feel is indeed different than that of Buddy but it's not any worse, just a bit more modern. I think it's pretty cool for a change, giving old songs a new feel just makes it more interesting to listen to because your not hearing the same thing again.
Just toward the end of the solo you start to remember "oh yeah, he's an extreme metal drummer!" And I mean that in the best way, it's great to see such versatility.
i don't like the feel and direction of his solo and his fills have no genuine jazz big band swing feel to it...he's a remarkable talent but he's human
Hmmm....Well...., the way I see this, it seems Dream Theater really did their homework in the drum auditions for the replacement to Mike Portnoy. My first choice though was Mike Mangini and next was Virgil Donati. But watching Marco Minnemann play, I think he's one of those "world class drummers" DT was mentioning about. Congrats to this guy then if he's the one. Only one thing I suggest, MM should get a drumkit, I mean a real BIG Drumkit, as in w/ double bass pedals!!

@realdrummer110 I think that's a very biased view. DT is a great band with great musicians. Everyone has their opinions. But Dream Theater has and will always be one of my favorite bands. Their arrangements and skills are fantastic. Marco would be a great addition to them.
Like I said earlier everyone has their own opinions. I don't think so. I believe Dream Theater have always brought good a ideas and music in all their career. It's an amazing band with phenomenal musicians. You have your opinion I have mine.
@immortalsoloist I hope DT is finished forever. That's my opinion. Unless they want to do a concert on a raft in the Gulf of mexico. i wouldn't mind that. Would you go see them there?
@realdrummer110 I don't mind seeing them live at all. I have been a huge fan from an early age. Wherever they play and if i get a chance to see them I shall. Why should they end... They are a great band.... Although them without Portnoy is kind of weird but anyhow best of luck to them. You shouldn't be so biased. There are very few good musicians being able to bring out good music to a wide market. DT is successful at it. So support it. If you don't want to then that's your own view.
AMAZING time and feel, considering Marco didnt have a lot of practice time with the band before this video was made! Anyone trashing his playing or feel is just fucking stupid. period. He is one of the best I have ever seen behind a kit, and to this day still blows me away how he can do so much with his limbs! If you think this is good, watch him behind his regular kit!! Marco!! Solo!!
Fantastic solo, havn't seen such stick flipping since Sonny Payne, Kind of unusual kit setup with hi-hats and floor toms on both sides, Incredible hand speed and coordination. It says that this is the Buddy Rich Big Band but why are all the band stands MM, the tune was a Buddy standard but this must be Marco's own band.
The tempo is not right, he does not swing, the phrasing is all over the place.
His chops are brilliant, tecnique is flawless but this is not that great.
An insular performance. Checkout the Buddy version from '73 right up to '86 and feel the swing. Sorry Marco you are a brilliant drummer but this just does not work

@fletcherman1 He never shook tempo, he never shook the swing when he played with the band. I don't know, maybe since you look at it and see Buddy isn't on the kit you automatically decide to thrash Marco's performance?
@JorahDumond He's always been one of my favorite drummers. He still ain't got that swing though, but he's probably getting there (and it's not that I'm saying that I've got it or something ludicrous like that). Other than that: WORSHIP HIM !
@fletcherman1 I have to agree with you. I was searching youtube for MM and when I saw "Time check" I got excited. I played this in High School back in 1981. When the band first came in I was scratching my head, something was off, it could'nt be MM he is a monster. After reading your post I realize it wasn't in my head and it was MM. Although MM is one of the greatest, Jazz/Swing is a different Animal.....Im gonna go search this with Buddy on drums.
marco is the proof that a drummer can attempt to play any style of music there is but can't be as good in all the genres like the real genre pros.. even if he feels comfortable in all those styles. marco combines a lot which is great. but that solo was pathetic compared to buddy or morello and the REAL big band and jazz drummers. and in death metal? yeah he tried death metal (in necrophagist). = failed. he has no high speed and stamina and the wrong sound and setup for that.new necro drummer has
Dude, are you of his callibre? He's one of the most impressive drummers I've ever seen. There's not many drummers out there who can play as well as he can
I know some pianists who can play both classical and jazz, at high levels; I assume it is possible to achieve the same with extreme metal and jazz drumming but hey you "might" need to practise a LOT :)
the feeling is so different from the former to the latter. Nonetheless metal is mainly about speed and stamina, no need to learn crazy licks and subtleties. Of course Necrophagist is different story, no really insane speeds but the drum tracks are a hell to play well (from Romain's words)
Is it just me or is this really out of synch?
Forgetfulfergtison 1 week ago
Wow I never knew he played this concert too truly a great musician maybe the reincarnation of buddy rich? Certainly without the temperament tho xD

@fletcherman1 youre kidding

@fletcherman1 He never shook tempo, he never shook the swing when he played with the band. I don't know, maybe since you look at it and see Buddy isn't on the kit you automatically decide to thrash Marco's performance?

@JorahDumond yeah people ride buddy's dick. there are other drummers out there.
CamerOneiric 1 year ago
@JorahDumond He's always been one of my favorite drummers. He still ain't got that swing though, but he's probably getting there (and it's not that I'm saying that I've got it or something ludicrous like that). Other than that: WORSHIP HIM !

@fletcherman1 I agree, no doubt the guy has talent, but this did no feel right. Sounds like a talented drummer who doesn't have a feel for this tune.

Although MM is one of the greatest, Jazz/Swing is a different Animal.....Im gonna go search this with Buddy on drums.

now this is a guy that can play anything...from death metal to jazz. this swings really nice.

marco is the proof that a drummer can attempt to play any style of music there is but can't be as good in all the genres like the real genre pros.. even if he feels comfortable in all those styles. marco combines a lot which is great. but that solo was pathetic compared to buddy or morello and the REAL big band and jazz drummers. and in death metal? yeah he tried death metal (in necrophagist). = failed. he has no high speed and stamina and the wrong sound and setup for that.new necro drummer has

Of course Necrophagist is different story, no really insane speeds but the drum tracks are a hell to play well (from Romain's words)
rbDrum01 2 years ago
and I think Marco played it fine, he can definitely groove
rbDrum01 2 years ago
Yeah, metal is definitely not all about speed and stamina. Naybe some generic mainstream metal
XylussN 2 years ago
@rbDrum01
Mainly about speed and stamina? Depends on the kind of metal... For instance, early 90's power metal or progressive metal are not that way.
Perhaps that's what's mainly needed to play grind core, death metal, and black metal...
