The amazing thing about both John and Charlie is they grew up in the same neighborhood in the Bronx. I jammed with both of them way back when and they were amazing even then. They are both gifted drummers and great guys.
I got that quote from James Hetfield himself! While talking to him after the Monsters of Rock tour that they played with Kingdom Come,Dokken,The Scorpions and Van Halen. A mediocre show...Was backstage and the only band I wanted to meet was Metallica and got to...made fun of Lars and thats when James said that to me...SO When you OWN drummer thinks your a douchebag...who am I to argue...He sucks! Even James thinks so....You going to argue with Hetfield also? Good luck!
You MetalliaFAGS...Even James says that Lars is s shitty drummer...and I quote" Hey he may be shitty...but he is ours!" open your screwy minds and listen to Charlie Benante. The man has the fastest feet in the business. Lars is a sawed off HACK compared to Charlie and Mike. These guys play circles around him...
@frankiethedago It always amuses me when some neanderthal has to resort to juvenile name calling because someone dares have an opinion that differs from their own. Context of the quote....look into it. James was obviously being sarcastic. No, lars is not a shitty drummer but yes tempesta and benante along with a horde of others are miles ahead of him
John Tempesta is really good,But Charlie Benante is fucking great-there's a difference.Charlie is also credited as being the father of the blast beat, and like someone else said on here,Charlie don't cheat!!
@38decembers actually blast beat was already played by jazz drummers in the 50's and in heavy metal Eric Brecht of D.R.I. was probably the first drummer to use it
@38decembers john tempesta is great 2. its hard to say drum offs are rly competitions there a coming together of drummer to show there different styles and have a good time doin it i do "like" keyword :P charlie more but that doesnt mean john tempesta isnt better see what im sayin :)
@38decembers yea i like charlie more cause he has def influenced me more...but man john tempesta is a helluva a metal drummer a very "versatile" one at that. Def in one way or another can give charlie a run for his money
@OGTheDemon They are both pretty verastile but being in alot of bands like John has gives him an edge but Charlie has played with Public Enemy and a few others as well.Their are tons of bands that cite John and Charlie as influences for what they have brought to the metal genre and I don't see either one giving up their sticks anytime soon.
Man, what a couple of badasses! So cool that they've remained good friends and the mutual respect is obvious when they play together. Gotta call this one a draw.
Very cool that they reference "Bonzo's Montreux!!"
wow.... John used to be a Drum tech for Charlie and now he's headlining MD fest and what an honerable way to pay tribute and share the stage with charlie.
@danszig actually triggers are mainly used to produce a sound when hit using audio samples. alot of drummers use this to have a decent kick sound at all times, but it can be used for multiple hits i spose. also, you can set the softer hits to react softer etc. so you can keep playing using dynamics as normal but just with any kick sound you like. so if i got triggers, i could take john bonham kick samples and either have that myself, or even mix it with mine. :D
funny thing is charlie does not know what he is playing as far as being able to put in into tab form however he is great. always loved the stuff he came up with for anthrax. what a great drummer

Lars sucks nuts. I learn a metallica song a week (on average) on drums. And I only drum about 6 hours a week.

I think Benante is one of best drummers, Urlich and Lombardo should buy some lesson in Benante's school
