While out on the stump, Obama talked about raising the FICA income cap as the best way to deal with the growing problem with the Social Security trust fund. I believe that many in the GOP agree, but I don't see them saying they're going to reduce taxes for 95% of working Americans.
The current cap is something like $102K. I've seen a proposed raise in the cap of $17K. $17K @ 12.4% would be $2108. How do those people fit into the 95%?
You're right, it does have a hole. I've seen mumblings of removing the cap altogether. The hole would be eliminated, but then we'd be dealing with the biggest slight of hand imaginable. It would blow any pretension of our contributions being a prepayment toward our own retirement. Could be why the Dems are talking about elimination of the 401k & replacing it with a new mandatory retirement fund.

If she tanks then I tank and my employees tank. It is real. Minimum wage went up recently. Good for unskilled workers right? Not for the 15% of my staff that I had to lay off. The same will be true with B.O.'s tax plan. People have to get past the promises of sunshine and lolipops Obama is making and deal in reality.
I actually started out at minimum wage in 1988for $4.35/hr delivering pizzas. I got in the management training program and got a raise to a whopping $4.50/hr. But I worked hard, got noticed, and soon became successful enough to raise 3 kids, put my wife through college, and own a modest home. Yes,I got many raises, but I worked hard for them. Minimum wage offered a chance to gain experience and training to move to a better postition. My point is that now 15% less people have that opportunity.
Take it from a 20+ year CPA that's out here doing all of these corporate and individual tax returns, that allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire given the problems we're having will be a DISASTER. Businesses are not taxed on expenses, including employee costs, so no one has ever been fired over taxes. Individual tax rates only apply to certain business entities, the ones with the least legal protection, so most businesses don't choose them. Obama has no plans to change the corporate tax rate at all, so it doesn't affect the most common entities.

Wow, I can't believe so many people actually believe that higher taxes means a business will "fire employees". That lack of understand about the most basic operations of a business is frightening. People, businesses are only taxed on profit, not revenue. Do you know the difference?
I'm talking about the video. The claim that high taxes will mean businesses will be forced to fire employees and an inelegant lie - businesses are taxed on whatever is left over after all expenses are paid, so employee expenses are neither taxed nor count as profit.
It is only businesses with employees that get hit by this. Taxes are an expense just like any other. Business owners want profits to grow, not shrink. Obama will shrink them. To offset that, any business that cares about staying in business cuts costs. That means hours of payroll.
It also means a job they never offer because it is not worth the risk to grow at such obscene tax rates. That is the real cost.
Wow, we were having a fairly intelligent discussion until you just started saying things that made no sense. "only businesses with employees"? "Taxes are an expense"? "cut costs" with "hours of payroll"?
If a business can continue to make profits and still cutting payroll hours, they usually do it for the sake of cutting expenses, period, not because taxes have "risen" (even though those taxes would not apply to employee expenses).
What if not enough is left over? What if the owner wants to make $1 million a year so he can invest in a different business?
You really have to be naive to believe what you say. Businesses are in business to make a profit. If you tax that profit at 56%, you will turn off all incentives for small business to grow. Risking the farm for 44 cents on the dollar is a bad bet, I do not care who you are...
You make it sound like S-corps have no choice! If one chooses to be an S-corp, which can mean fewer taxes depending on the situation, then yes, then the profits are passed on to the stockholders and they pay individual income tax rates. However, if it should be more advantageous, tax-wise, to choose a C-corp election, then they may submit a form to the IRS and pay the corporate tax rate. There are many options, depending on the situation. No one is forced to be a S-corp or soleproprietorship.
Then you get double taxed on dividends, which is EXACTLY why they never do that.
Who cares what they are forced to do, that is not the point.
Millions choose S-corps for simplicity and the preferential tax treatment. Obama's plan destroys that, along with about a million current and potential jobs.
The corporate tax rate is 35%, but you have a completely different accounting system, meaning that many expenses will no longer be allowable. Plus, you then have dividends which get taxed again.
We have an S-corp and I know that I am not intimidated by the rolling back of the tax code to the 2000 levels. I don't mind, it's really not as big a change as you think it is. Only the top two tax brackets will rise and those will rise by 3% and 6% respectively, rolling by the Bush tax cuts from '01-04 back to where they were under Clinton.
And you are wrong about one thing once you begin to make a lot of money, there are many situations where a C-corp makes a lot more sense than an S-corp
Maybe you do not employ 10 people...maybe you do not have $3 million sunk into that business that requires a 15% rate of return to attract investment capital.
It is the business that create real jobs that care about such things. Most S-corps are Avon sales ladies and the like, that is not what grows this economy.

If you research you'd find that Dubai has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world and average salaries start out higher there than in the US. You have to take into account that $200 a month goes much further in some countries than it does in the US.

Maybe one of the Obama fans can help me out. While out on the stump, Obama talked about raising the FICA income cap as the best way to deal with the growing problem with the Social Security trust fund. I believe that many in the GOP agree, but I don't see them saying they're going to reduce taxes for 95% of working Americans.
The current cap is something like $102K. I've seen a proposed raise in the cap of $17K. $17K @ 12.4% would be $2108. How do those people fit into the 95%?

You're right, it does have a hole. I've seen mumblings of removing the cap altogether. The hole would be eliminated, but then we'd be dealing with the biggest slight of hand imaginable. It would blow any pretension of our contributions being a prepayment toward our own retirement. Could be why the Dems are talking about elimination of the 401k & replacing it with a new mandatory retirement fund.

Obama represented ACORN in court to force banks to lend money to the people who could not afford it. Obama is the second largest recipient of money from Fannie Mae. McCain in 2005 and Bush in 2003 proposed to regulate bad loan practice, but Obama and Dems refused pass the McCain's bill.

What I find interesting is that some people will believe anything Obama says and say something to the effect like, "but he said". The day I believe everything a politician says is the day I am a sucker.
Since when have we regarded politicians as the truthful type, I like a lot of what Obama says, but I feel he is saying what he needs to get elected, I just don't think his record and past give him the credibility that he needs to promise what he is going to do.

Doing hundreds of corporate tax returns gives a person insight into what the business owners are thinking. They are racing to sell real property, and get things done before Obama gets elected. They are going to do nothing as far as expanding once he's in office. I know, I get the calls every day. I'm simply stating a fact. I get calls constantly from small business owners (Gross $1-$6 million year) who are terrified of Obama winning. They are taking steps now to prepare. It sure seems to me that we will go from a credit crisis to a full blown deep recession.

McCain will win this handily. The sad thing is that whomever wins this will be labelled as the one that presided over the worst depression in world history, no matter what they do.
That said, if Obama actually were to actually win and actually do what he says he will do, it will end in civil war, the people will have no choice. The "good" news is that if he were to win he probably would not do all those things. He is trying to win and will say anything to get elected -promising us "stuff".

This is spot on. This is the message McCain has to get out there. This is the winning strategy. I've managed a pizza shop for 20 years. I don't make $250K. But my franchisee does. If she tanks then I tank and my employees tank. It is real. Minimum wage went up recently. Good for unskilled workers right? Not for the 15% of my staff that I had to lay off. The same will be true with B.O.'s tax plan. People have to get past the promises of sunshine and lolipops Obama is making and deal in reality.

I actually started out at minimum wage in 1988for $4.35/hr delivering pizzas. I got in the management training program and got a raise to a whopping $4.50/hr. But I worked hard, got noticed, and soon became successful enough to raise 3 kids, put my wife through college, and own a modest home. Yes,I got many raises, but I worked hard for them. Minimum wage offered a chance to gain experience and training to move to a better postition. My point is that now 15% less people have that opportunity.

Find one economist who believes increased gov't spending and increased taxes during a recession makes any sense. There is not ONE who agrees with that. We were in a recession when Reagan took office and he CUT the top tax rate from 70% to 28%. THAT MAKES SENSE, NOT AN INCREASE.

S-Corporations also file as individuals, so the same issues affect them. A smart person would know this.
Employers get taxed on the profits that any new employee helps generate. How dense do you have to be to see that?

No, you didn't. Or maybe you thought you did and you just don't know what you think you know about the American tax system or running a business. Businesses are not taxed on expenses, including employee costs, so no one has ever been fired over taxes. Individual tax rates only apply to certain business entities, the ones with the least legal protection, so most businesses don't choose them. Obama has no plans to change the corporate tax rate at all, so it doesn't affect the most common entities.

What do I do? I cut costs, I cut staff.

It is only businesses with employees that get hit by this. Taxes are an expense just like any other. Business owners want profits to grow, not shrink. Obama will shrink them. To offset that, any business that cares about staying in business cuts costs. That means hours of payroll.
It also means a job they never offer because it is not worth the risk to grow at such obscene tax rates. That is the real cost.

If a business can continue to make profits and still cutting payroll hours, they usually do it for the sake of cutting expenses, period, not because taxes have "risen" (even though those taxes would not apply to employee expenses).

You really have to be naive to believe what you say. Businesses are in business to make a profit. If you tax that profit at 56%, you will turn off all incentives for small business to grow. Risking the farm for 44 cents on the dollar is a bad bet, I do not care who you are...

If one chooses to be an S-corp, which can mean fewer taxes depending on the situation, then yes, then the profits are passed on to the stockholders and they pay individual income tax rates. However, if it should be more advantageous, tax-wise, to choose a C-corp election, then they may submit a form to the IRS and pay the corporate tax rate. There are many options, depending on the situation. No one is forced to be a S-corp or soleproprietorship.

Then you get double taxed on dividends, which is EXACTLY why they never do that.
Who cares what they are forced to do, that is not the point.
Millions choose S-corps for simplicity and the preferential tax treatment. Obama's plan destroys that, along with about a million current and potential jobs.
The corporate tax rate is 35%, but you have a completely different accounting system, meaning that many expenses will no longer be allowable. Plus, you then have dividends which get taxed again.

And you are wrong about one thing once you begin to make a lot of money, there are many situations where a C-corp makes a lot more sense than an S-corp

It is the business that create real jobs that care about such things. Most S-corps are Avon sales ladies and the like, that is not what grows this economy.
