Shes not ignorant; I've realized it as I've grown older; shes naive; yes shes spoiled but shes also naive. I mean look at what shes done; she persuaded Harriet to NOT marry the other guy; she wants her to marry Mr. Elton; shes wants her to go BEYOND her station; to have a better life; think about it. UNFORUNATLY; back then that wasn't possible it wasn't something that was done; in their way of life; their society.
LOL Emma has got to be the more ignorant woman in this movie... what makes her think for one moment Elton likes ms.Smith? when has he ever asked about Ms Smiths wellfare or called upon her for anything? i think Emma is just daffy ..can't she see how Elton hangs on her every word..?
I love how Knightley comes to Emma's aid in little ways, like at the dinner table when he interrupts the argument between John and Emma's father. Very sweet. I love him!
From all Austen's leading ladies THIS ONE is very shallow, i dont like it so far. It's diferent for example comparing them with the Dashwood sisters or Lizzy Bennet, or any other women from other writters of that time like Jane Eyre.
This Emma girl is the most shallow of all of them.
Mr. Knightly is soo sensible, he always speak the truth even if emma hates to hear about it. they are soo meant to be, she is dramatic, emotional and sometimes silly, while he is calmm sweet, honest and just straightforward.
the only "good" thing about this adaptation is blake ritson. I find this adaptation too "modern" and don't think emma and mr. knightley have any chemistry whatsoever!
lol I like how Elton's horse always slips a little when he's riding. It seems to add to the silliness of his character. (and all addition to his silliness is needed in this one, for he is far too good looking to giggle at for to long without sighing in heartache!) ;)
although it must be really annoying to have a dad so overprotective and always worrying, i think he's just so sweet and he always does look so genuinely worried, it would be hard not to like him no matter how silly some oh his ideas may be
I should have said that her formidable heighth makes her stoop and seem less elegant. Daughters of landed gentry were taught how to move with grace, to stand straight, not to stare with open mouths, to use good manners while eating, etc. It is not Romola's looks but her extreme facial gestures that do not fit the role of Emma.
Although this Emma is likeable she lacks the grace of Austen's Emma. The actress's formidable heighth is a disadvantage in this role. Her body movements seem uncouth and her mouth movements look clownish. She is better suited to play a farmer's healthy daughter rather than a daughter of landed gentry.
Really? You have statistics on this, then? What did typical daughters of landed gentry look like? What if they happened to look like the actress here and be tall-ish? They were thrown out of the family to become farmer´s healthy wives? And how about the moves then? Do you have videos so that we could compare?
"Ship court!" I loved Emma's face when she says that! I thought that Emma can be a little annoying, when she forces relationships, like the refusal of Robert...Martins? Can't recall the name. yeah, but she's just trying to be good at heart, and she has spirit :)
Emma's elder sister Isabella Woodhouse is married to Mr. George Knightly's younger brother John Knightly. Therefore, Emma and Mr. Knightly are in-laws.
Sometimes? I almost hated her at first but then... I just accepted her.
I was so mad about the idea of Austen writting about someone like Emma. I don't know why I was so.. against this special character of hers. Finally, at the very end, I kinf od fell in love with the book. It just jumped from one extreme to the other.
Me too. She's a silly rich girl, but in spite of her little prejudices and childish fantasies, she has a good heart, she takes care of her father and she's certainly not as vain and arrogant as someone who's been spoilt as she has could end up being.
why didn't mr. elton just say the riddle was for emma? he could have shot down the idea that it was for ms. smith and then there would have been no confusion... oh well
I think his arrogance prevented him from ever thinking that Emma would imagine otherwise. He was SEVERELY shocked when he realized that not only was Emma uninterested in marrying him but that she'd hoped to set him up with the likes of Miss Smith.
How can you say that!?!?! Emma and Mr. Knightley are the PERFECT couple! Emma may make mistakes, but we all do. Her heart is in the right place, which is what counts.

Hey, Elton and Emma totally deserve each other. Better a sweet useless girl like Harriet than a snarky useless girl like Emma - who is actually more frivolous than poor Harriet.
Odd that they give the original lines to everyone but the main character, Emma....who just seems to be bent on being a contentious woman 90% of the time.
I think the whole story is about Emma growing up. It's not her fault that she's been spoiled all her life. But through the events happening in this story he becomes a better person, and a large part of it is with the help of Mr. Knightley. As for who is better to end up with who, you can never tell. The heart wants what the heart wants. There is no such thing as a perfect couple. What you think is perfect, might not seem perfect to others.
