what type of cell were they? were could i buy some?

They are Headway model 38120S cells. They are manufactured in China and are available from a US distributor called Manzanita Micro. (I can't paste URLs here but they should be the first link returned from a search). There are discussions about these cells on the forums sections at both endless-sphere (dot com) and diyelectriccar (dot com). Both of those sites have discussion forums on electric car and electric bike technology.
