The fact that people of all beliefs can stand up for them is a direct result of that flag, the song and the thousands who have died defending your rights to be disrespectful. If you were in some foreign countries and protested or disrespected their government, you would be jailed or just taken out and shot. We owe it to those who died for Freedom to stand, take our hats off and stop acting like it's such a bother. I stand out of respect for any National Anthem, even other countries'.
I have no problem with standing to show respect for a national anthem, mine or another's. I do it as a polite gesture, not as an endorsement. Just as I have no problem standing and bowing my head during prayer because I use the opportunity to make my own prayer to my own God. To each their own.
The Star Spangled Banner glorifies and worships the Battle Flag of a government that makes war for "manifest destiny", "the common good", & other collectivist & religious fantasies.
"Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'"
The idea of compromising principles in quest of a "bigger tent" is what has destroyed the LP.
And just as destructive and deceptive. Isn't it interesting who the anarchists are out on the street with when they do their upstanding and civilized destruction of private property, that is right the Communists, Socialists, and Fascists.
Because too many people slept and allowed humanities lowest nature to take control of the reins of governmental power in the USA, the system is bad? NO! The system works great, the sleepers are just as culpable as the criminals now in charge in Washington DC. People that think thugs in control now are bad, just wait to see what a Utopia an anarchist society would be. Anarchy is just as firmly shaded under the Totalist Permutation Umbrella as any other slave mongering philosophy.
I have no problem with the song. or standing but inside I just don't really connect with it. and I can tell you why. I associate songs like that with fake patriotism not because it isn't a good song with meaning but because people worship something that hasn't existed since the civil war. we worship this false idea that we live in a free country and that somehow our government is good simply on the merits of its founding fathers.
but the problem with that is we have long strayed from the principles of our fathers and that flag no longer stands for what we think it does. so while I might stand out of respect and politeness I know that essentially it is empty pining for something that once was.
The people who are sitting should be ashamed of themselves... the Founding Fathers died for us to be able to have the Freedoms we have. Show some respect.
@JJ4Governor That being said, what does a song have to do with that? Furthermore, what does a song written about the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1812 have to do with respect? The song itself was not adopted as the national anthem until 1931. It's just a song, and it appears your ire is that some people do not honor "freedom" the way you choose, that being stone faced solemnity during a song.
Actually, the Founding Fathers died mostly of age or disease, though they sacrificed greatly.
I wouldn't have stood. I never do. I usually just leave to go to the bathroom as everyone's getting up! It's a good length song to drain the lizard, plus the bathrooms are relatively empty at that point! What a deal I wouldn't get upset but I wouldn't stand either. Now, if we can just get the nationalists to stay calm when we don't stand for their song that would be something!
First off I am not a anarchist but I was at a table were I believe no one stood and we were right in the front row I even left my hat on. I did applaud after the singing because Mrs. Itse did a beautiful job singing the song. I do wish I saw her after the dinner so I could have complemented her.
If someone had a problem with her singing the song they need to look in to the mirror and find out why they felt that way.
I went to a libertarian meetup once and they started with the pledge of allegiance. I thought I had accidentally gone to the wrong meeting.

Anarchists getting upset at the Star Spangled Banner are like people who get offended at South Park.

Awe! You left out my "WTF" hand gestures. Oh well. :)
I'm not surprised Seth took the opportunity to rant about anarchists. *eye roll*

I think more anarchists were pissed that they had to wait for dinner while hearing "vote for me blah blah blah."
