  • The tubes allow fluid to drain out of the middle ear but they also may allow fluid IN, which is why some Dr's recommend earplugs when swimming or bathing (for a child especially). There is some research to suggest this may not be necessary though.

  • So why is it that kids need special ear pugs after this for swimming?

  • i've had ETD for about 6 years now and have had atleast 50 of these surgeries! have learned to live with it though! and i am only 26 years old!

  • Getting this done today. My fourth set(i'm 17). I will have to get this done many other times when I get older as my ears will never function correctly. :(

  • I had tubes and one fell out and the doctor ended up pulling the other one out at an appointment It didn't hurt... It just felt weird but now there's a hole and he said I have to get it patched when i get older

  • I had this operation when I was 4.

  • I had this operation done 5 different times when I was younger, mine kept popping out. When I was younger it seemed like it took longer than this but the last time I had them was when I was 13, can't quite remember everything because that was 17 years ago and the anesthesia made me loopy. =)

  • Has anyone got it done as adult and if yes, were you able to hear afterwards with same ability? Also how painful is it? please respond?

  • Had it done a few times when i was 4, made many many visits for hearing tests and stuff.

  • UHHHH I THOUGHT THAT SHIT WAS AN EYE

  • Do you know when the tube comes out? I don't think mine did but the hole is plugged up now - do the tubes staying in hurt you?

  • @codyjp5 My tubes came out about a year later. I had a check up with my usual doctor and he used a speacial plastic instrument to take them out. If the hole has plugged up that should mean that they fell out one their own.

  • @codyjp5 I have had this done many times as a child and it never hurt and they do come out on there own. they grow out or if like me having a bath the next day after having it done. the doctor wasnt too happy about that.

  • @codyjp5 uh..no...after about 2 years thaey should be taken out if they havent fallen out, one of mine is out and it has been about 2 years already...i dont think they can hurt you, but you can talk to your doctor.

  • I am awake everytime they put tubes in my ears. Mine seem to fall out every 5-8 months, it sure gets annoying!! They do have a T Tube which is more long term but they have to put you to sleep.

  • DO YOU USE RIGID ENDOSCOPE FOR THAT

  • no but i was awake when they took them out and age 14 and it hurt like a bitch

  • R u awake when they do it

  • Nope. You're out for like, 10 minutes. I had ear tubes in recently(May 2009) and they're still in. I need them in for my hearing and for plane rides(My ear drums literally exploded last time I was on a plane.), so I let them fall out on their own.

  • @mom402 no your under anestisia

  • @mom402 no!!!!! that would hurt like hell :D

  • @mom402 no you are asleep for like 5 min...i had it done

  • @SiicKSmUrF519 HA me 2 although for me it was like 15 minits long though

  • how often do they cuse trouble? and do they fall easly ... my 18 month son is going to it next month and im afraid that's its gona fall or at lest water is going to go in

  • ive had several done (had lots of ear problems wen i was a kid...even now i still do.) most standard tubes last about a year (you can also get a "T" tube inserted, which can last up to 5 years due to its shape.) And, yes, with the ear drum being initially open, it is easier for fluid to get in and cause infection, so have him wear ear plugs when swimming or bathing. custom ear plugs can also be made if you fear standard wax or rubber plugs will fall out easily.

  • @MrG6051 me too only sad part 4 me it permanant ear infection i probly have same thing as u cuz my ears do same thing and when i get an infection they have yellow stuff coming out of them

  • I just got this done yesterday. Did anyone else have a rather large ear ache afterwards??

  • Yes, I think it's the drops that cause it.

  • dang... so i wasn't even in the surgery for 10 minutes? that tube is pretty big though :/

  • the tube looks big but when you see it its really tiny

  • In this video the doctor does not suction the opening of the ear drum BEFORE he places the tube, he's supposed to do it. Cut, suck, place, suck again, ear drops.

That's the way I had it done and that's how, I understand, SHOLUD be done.

  • Not necessarilly-my father does this procedure quite often and i showed him your comments and he said it depends on the level of leakage

  • that its a really big tube, mine is tiny

  • I had this done when I was younger. And my ear drum never healed. It finally healed after more than 5 years, right before they were about to perform a surgery on my to close the ear drum...

  • yes, although it does leave a scar on the ear drum but if you get it done once or twice its fine you will hear again, but I have had it done 10 times now including one removal of the tube, and my hearing has suffered because of the scaring! but as a rule yes the ear drum heals and all should be well after the operation :)

  • This is great, thank you for postin, I have had this done 9 times, the latest was for T-Tubes in april, and they may have to come out again as they are causing trouble, but thank you for this, its great to see how its done :)

  • do you ear agian when they cut your eardrum
