This is easily their best album since Everything Must Go though, and to those of you extreme nazi snobs who think they've sucked after the Holy Bible, they've always come out with tremendously good singles (A Design for Life, Kevin Karter, Everything Must Go, The Everlasting, Tsunami, You're Love Alone, There by the Grace of God, Empty Souls, So Why So Sad... etc)
This album is immense. It took the charts by storm, shook pop music to it's foundations and for a short time reminded us all of what guitar music should sound like and that it does have a place in the charts no matter what. Redemption in one album! The manics have gone from strength to strenght since and whilst not quite recapturing the old manics certainly making their new album releases an event and something to look forward to for all!
luv it. The stuff they have made has been a bit patchy since the holy bible which was amazing. I reckon if richey had not had been dissapeared this would have been the holy bibles follow up not middle stuff like kevin carter and a design for life
@5T3V3N94 sorry, which song was it they used a verse from spirit of radio..? i'm a rush and msp fan; not surprised to hear msp are rush fans, but always nice to hear the influence rub off in places.
The title... could it refer to the journals he kept in The Priory? I know Kurt Cobain left behind a couple of journals before he disappeared n killed himself.
this album is like the holy bible: new testament. the holy bible was like a big question and a problem (not criticising the album by the way) and this for me is like the answer or the resolution. thats how i think of it
yep, people need to let go of the assumption that there is a comparison between this and the holy bible. I hate it when people complain it wont match the holy bible, i mean maybe it doesnt match it but the past is the past. Yeah it was great 15 years ago. BUT FUCK IM LOVING THE PRESENT
@PeeledApples it's a good thing it wasn't Holy Bible 2...this album stands on its own, no matter when the lyrics were written or by who, as part of the recent trilogy of great albums by MSP.
Actually in various interviews both James and Nicky have said that musically it's an attempt to sound like Rush played by Magazine so tednedbed's got a point.
I've only gotten into the Manics within the last few months, but I have to say the music with Richey's lyrics seems to be the most thought provoking. He was a true poet.
@PeeledApples so true, I am a new fan, not from the UK, and have been obsessed with them for a couple of months now. Not that my obsession is waning :) Wish I'd known them earlier. They've changed my life profoundly. MSP 4ever
i think people need to let go of the past and move on to the future. Yeah the holy bible was great just move on, this is the manics nowadays. No amount of complaining is gonna bring the holy bible era back. I Bloody love this song
I think you're right. Holy Bible will always be my favourite album of theirs, but there has been some great material since. Lifeblood was the last one I bought and was a big disappointment whilst Send away the tigers completely passed me by, but this album is a real return to form! There is life after " ...Bible " !
I read that Richey wrote this about his time at the Priory n its pseudo-God bullshit. The "Only a God can bruise..." is good sarcasm (in my opinion, don't give me flak...)
I would love for this to be a No 1 album but it's unlikely to reach No 1 as Eminem is releasing his album on Monday as well. So that would probably be No 1 with the Manics probably ending up at No 2 again.
"You can have lovely shiny buttocks and guns everywhere in the supermarket on covers of magazines and CDs, but you show a piece of art and people just freak out," he said.
Listened to Generation.. the other day, and thought how suddenly out of date that song is. I wonder how long before the other two change their names and make the song an obsolete piece of history.
yeah they are amazing, im uploading a couple more videos which as far as im aware are not yet on youtube and these are from the new album. (mate of mine burned the disc for me, god knows where he got it from) but check my channel out for more songs from this album!
this album got richey's lyrics

The Verses and solo are great, guitars give me goosebumps there, chorus is typical Manics grandeur which is not necessarily a bad thing!

Yeah, clearly heavily influenced by, or a tribute to, Rush, who I know are Manics favourite band
