Good demo, but blood does not turn red because of oxygen. It's always red, but only appears to be blue due to the thickness of our skin forming an interface between the blood and air, with a higher index of refraction. Thus, just as the sky and ocean appear blue, when we know air and water are clean, our blood seems blue when it is in fact red. I Just thought Bill Nye, of all people, would know that.

@himiker Yes but that is a complicated explanation to elementary level students so he says in essence oxygen is what makes our blood look red.

@himiker He never said your blood was blue. Blood does turn red in oxygen, which quite coincidentally is what it carries throughout your body (amongst other things). Try brushing up on your facts before "enlightening" people. If you want more information try using Google, for the sake of a Youtube comment I won't go any further than that.

@mxmsfuyt I guess I did jump the gun on accusing him of claiming that blood turns red in the presence of the air's oxygen, when I now see that he was actually referring to the iron-oxygen reaction between the hemoglobin and the oxygen it carries through our blood vessels. Too many people assume that the air causes freshly exposed blood to instantly turn red, so I'm glad Bill isn't one of them after all.
