To me, this song seems to be about the "matrix-like" world that people are living. It's all material gain, money, a new house, car, divorce, remarry, affairs, nothing meaningful. Killings and suicides by depressed people who find no satisfaction in this shallow world, and who don't know where to turn. The TV shows exactly how shallow the modern world is, and it's very sad. The effects can be seen everywhere. Three cheers for Jack Johnson for this eye opening and beautiful song.

this song is called cookie jar because in the song cookie jar it goes around saying " who took the cookies from the cookie jar "not me not you than who?" so its relating his point that no one accepts blame for anything that goes on in this society when really we're the only ones who can stop bad things from happening. "we all have the blood on our hands." one of the most meaningful songs ever.
