  • BOOOOOOOOBBBBB

  • "The boy from Kenya" ... certainly a different time back in 64!

  • West Milton born and raised. That was a Bulldog crossing that line with the Gold. This town has done very little in it's 200 plus years in existance but we can all say that we lived in the shadow of an Olympic Gold Medalist. He set the tone for all kids that attended Milton-Union high school over the years. When we won in Football, Basketball and yes Track it was because of the standard that Bob Schul set in '64. God Bless you Bob and GO DOGS!!!

  • So I was sitting in track practice and this older guy came up and ask me when our next meet was. I talked with him for a couple minutes and I introduced myself. He was like, I'm Bob Schull, I won gold in the 1964 Olympics. My jaw hit the floor. So I talked to him for a while. Apparently he ran a 10k when he was 50 in 33 something. At that pace he would have beat me by a minute in a race to the 5k mark... I am honored to have talked with him.

  • Bob Shul....the first american ever to win the 5,000!!!!!

  • The last Americans (Mills10,000 and Schul 5,000) to win Olympic gold.

  • @ebf1957 Gosh, Frank Shorter will be upset to learn that....

  • @VirenKickedPresAss

Shorter won the Gold Medal in the Marathon at the '72 Olympics and a Silver at the '76 Olympics.

  • @ebf1957 Then, why did you say that Mills and Schul were the last to win American gold?

  • @VirenKissedYiftersAss....he means that mills and Schul were the last to win gold at the 5 and 10, 000

  • @springsteel333 He must be your boyfriend, or it is another alias of yours.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Based on the name of your youtube account, you seem like such an arrogant fuck. Obviously, anyone who in anyway disrespects one of America's most idolized distance runners will arouse conflict. The fact that you have probably accomplished nothing in your life and sure as hell haven't had as much success as the American runners that you insult shows that the only thing you care about is trolling any american running video you see and starting up conflict. You are pathetic.

  • @XCisAwesome What disrespect??!?!? Viren DID kick Pre's ass. EASILY.

  • I agree with Rawr/AndYeah. He beat Kip Keano.

  • I agree with Rawr/AndYeah

  • He kicked that guys butt! I met Mr. Schul saturday! He signed my shirt, and then he signed the back of my friends phone hahaha! Hes so nice!

  • @RawrAndYeah

    yeah He is freaken awesome

  • Bon Schul Invitational THIS SATURDAY WOO! WOO!

  • Just got an autographed book from Bob Schul yesterday as a gift. Met him and trained with his runners one day over 30 years ago. Thanks for posting this video. This is one of the great races of all time.

  • I live in ohio and i saw this guy training a woman for a 20k national championship walk.....its amazing as i went to run this morning he started talking to me and little did i know that this 72 year old man was an olympian, introducing himself to me as bob schul. what a small world

  • @TD10

im mad i click on your link on facebook and you're the first comment i see. lmao

  • Damn that was an awesome kick the last 100m. Schul is a beast.

  • Did he just say Salinger instead of Dellinger?

  • I hadn't seen this since 1964.I have the issue of Track and Field News, which gives the splits.

I don't think the announcer would call Kip Keino,a boy, today.

  • @rentslave

    I agree

  • Schul had the physical ability, Igloi had the training regimen -obviously a perfect combination.

  • Why Jazy didn`t run 1500m in Tokio?

  • Easy, because of Peter Snell...

  • @rytkonen I'll tell you why

Because Snell made a very smart move.

He ran 600m in front of all press.

  • what i find funny is everyone talks about pre, and that no one talks about schul or dellinger. dellinger is only known as the guy who "assisted" bowerman with pre, yet dellinger won a medal at the olympics, something pre couldnt manage. go figure.

  • Bekele. All I need to say.

  • Nike's PR machine has posthumously lionized Prefontaine for 35 years yet Dellinger is the real home-grown hero of Oregon distance running.

  • @fosbury68

With all due respect to Pre, I think you are close to true

  • @fosbury68 In the FOTtrack docomentary made in 1995 bill dellinger's direct quote"pre was by far the best runner this country has ever seen". pre was great long before he was track endorser for nike. never seen this footage before. i had only read about 64 5k. dellinger takes 3rd the same way ian stewart took 3rd from pre in 72games. last 30 yard sprint takes bronze.

  • This was a dramatic race. I think the lead

changed three times in the last 600 metres.

Bob Schul definitely was in peak shape in this race, and fortunately he was, because

I don't think he participated in the 1968 Olympics anymore. Michel Jazy ran excellently until the home straight. Then he tied up and lost the medals, similarly

to Steve Prefontaine in 1972. Harald

Norpoth came from behind to take silver

(he ran competitively until 1973). Bill

Dellinger managed to squeeze past Jazy.

  • now top highschool runners are running that time

  • Who?

  • Do ya think they could have kicked with these guys? Time is relative, to say the least.

  • In a heavy rain on a cinder track? Probably not.

  • @fosbury68 Yes it was raining accrding to Clarke

  • @Drewsmom0604

    Tell you what.

First, go talk with your grandpa. If he argees with what you said, ask him if he was happy with that.

Second, ask him what's he believeve in.

Your grandpa saw too much in his life. I am sure, you'll find the truth

  • this is awesome. he is our xc team's equivalent to pre.

  • A very great last lap.

  • I like to watch these old races.

Michel Jazy, Harald Norpoth, Kipchoge Keino...

Those were the days when runners where

    still human beings.

  • As a former Duck who ran for Dellinger, this was WAY cool to see again. Always inspiring.

  • Too bad Legat was injured this year....

  • @vitoduval

When it comes to results....Lagat is AMAZING but he has yet to win an Olympic gold....

  • I watched this race as a teenager. Great victory for Bob!

  • Coach Schul has invited a bunch of fellow American distance legends for a reunion at the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Horace Ashenfelter (52 Gold), Mills (64 Gold), Ryun, Beatty, Dellinger, George Young, Gerry Lindgren and a bunch of Igloi's Boys should be there.

  • Bronze at the 63 Pan Am Games 5000 and the AAU 3-mile title in 1965.

Schul was a late-bloomer who was hampered by asthma and injuries.

He thrived under Mihaly Igloi's hard track workouts, but needed an injury-free year to approach his potential.

He was undefeated in 1964, breaking the World Record for the 2-mile and the American Records for the 3-mile and 5000.

His kick was deadly. He ran the second mile of his 2-mile record under 3:59, and his last lap of his 5K AR was 54 seconds.

  • Amazing result considering the stature of people beaten - Clarke, Jazy and Keino were the who's who of distance running. Can't remember the winner doing anything before or since. Anybody know any different?

  • Wow...an American who actually won a distance gold on the track. Maybe people should look up to Schul and Billy Mills instead of Prefontaine or other dudes who never won at the highest level.

  • @Lyndehouse

BTW, in my childhood I read a Clarke's book (translated to Russian). In that book he mentioned some guy who told him before these games "Americans will never win an Olympic medal in distance run, they just don't have traditions in this area"

  • @Lyndehouse Maybe we just do not see Americans winning Olympic distance golds today because of the absence of the representation various African nations.

  • This is historic!

Especially when considering the quality of the field, Jazy and Keino have both held their share of world records.

  • I Believe Bill Dellinger coached Steve Prefontaine at Oregon

  • that's bowerman, not dellinger

  • Was'nt Bill Bowerman the head coach and Dellinger an assistant at Oregon when Pre was there?

  • Bowerman and Dellinger both coached Prefontaine at UO. Bowerman was head coach, Dellinger was assistant coach for distance running. Dellinger took over when Bowerman retired in 1972 and coached until he retired in 1999.

  • That is correct

  • YEAH KEVIN THATS YOU RIGHT THERE IN THE FRONT ONE DAY!
