I think someone should really cut together this scene, the scene at the beginning of The Two Towers, and Gandalf's descriptive flashback to show the whole battle in one vid. Who's with me?!
@Liizardss False...you can clearly see that he pulls Gandalf off his feet, but once Gandalf is hanging by his hands from the bridge, the whip wasn't holding his leg anymore.
1:13. The Balrog's whip was removed from his ankle. Why did Gandalf wish to fall to it's death, other than trying to kill the Balrog? It would have died fighting it's own way up the stairs back up, which probably contained Cthulhu and Haermaeus Mora.
I am a servant of the secret fire, wielder of Anor (the Elvish ring of power - Narya), dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun (Utumno - the oldest and the strongest fortress of Vala Melkor)
@MrLjb57 You need a minimum initial speed at the ground before taking off, unless the Balrog can flap its wings 100 times per second like a hummingbird.
@MrLjb57 he was getting smashed with the rocks and the cave was tooo small if you saw all the movies you will se when he is falling down he gets beat up on the stones so he cant open his wings
@MrLjb57 Tolkien never really describes them with wings... he says something like "the Balrog spread it's shadow like two vast wings"... besides, those wings in th movies looked like skeletal wings
@MrLjb57 The air is probably too weak to be able to fly here... Note you see him do a jump though aided by his wings but thats probably the most he can do in this kinda air in a cave.
I watch these every year usually around my birthday in December..this part was epic but it was always lame how he was a wizard..and all he was doing was hanging there..and he had to let go? He could pull himself up.I mean really? Did he want to fight this thing? Retrieve his sword and staff? Anyone shed any light on it?
@TwojkReturns In the book, there are a lots of orcs with bows on the other side of the bridge. It would have been dangerous to help Gandalf. Furthermore, the rest of the bridge fell soon after Gandalf. ;)
And maybe Gandalf wanted to fight the Balrog. It's a powerful creature so he has to make sure that it was dead.
A Balrog is a Maiar, somekind of a god species. Gandalf as well as the balrogs and saruman and radagast and Sauron is a Maiar.
They have been sent by the Valars in Middle Earth to help the peoples but some of them joined Morgoth, the only Valar who chose evil (The Devil)
Therefore, none of the community of the Ring is able to fight the Balrog but Gandalf since they are him and the Balrog of a superior species, godlike. The fight is equal between Gandalf and the Balrog
The Maiars who chose evil are the Balrogs and Sauron. Morgoth has been defeated, therefore Sauron is the higher level in the evil side. He has become way more powerful than Gandalf for example, though he's just a Maiar as Gandalf in the first place.
We can suppose also that if Gandalf had taken the Ring for himself in the beginning he could have become very powerful. This is why he feared the ring and he first saw it. He knows what power it could give him but fears to go evil
And this is also why Saruman seeks the Ring, as a Maiar, he could become as powerful as Sauron with the Ring. I guess he'd like to defeat Sauron and become the new lord of evil.
I'm assuming that if that Balrog had passed, it/he would've posed a new threat to all of Middle Earth. Gandalf mentions that is not from Sauron but from an Ancient time.
I'd like to have an explanation behind the dialogue between Gandalf and the Balrog, is there history between wizards and balrogs? Or is it just a light vs darkness thing?
@Johnnyblazedanketch Gandalf is basically an angel (but in human form) and the Balrog is an ancient creature from the beginning of time created by the dark enemy Morgoth. He is telling him that he is of the higher power of the Valar (the angels) and that the dark fire of Udun (Utumno, the fortress of Morgoth and the birth place of the Balrogs) will not help him. If you really want an in depth look at it (and a much better explanation lol) read The Silmarillion. It explains everything.
@Number1ricky Gandalf could have marched into Mordor and laid waste to the whole place but when he was first sent to the world he was required to swear that he would not use his power to decide the fate of Middle Earth. Only in great need can he use his power, which is why he cursed the Balrog to prevent it from crossing the bridge.
@ChristopherDGentry In the Two Towers, when Gandalf returns from his rebirth, he tells Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, "I am Gandalf, Gandalf the White, but Black is mightier still." (pg. 500 of my edition). Gandalf reveals himself as mighty, but not mightier than Sauron.
The only way Gandalf could march into Mordor and "lay waste to the whole place" is if he claimed the One Ring.
@HistoryLubber I'm assuming that Gandalf laying claim to the One ring was not a possibility as it was forged by Sauron himself, and only he can control it's power? So, Gandalf would have eventually fallen under control of Sauron.
@lonegear - Actually, if Gandalf were to take the one ring for himself, he would become another Dark Lord. Then there would be two of them and not one. Sauron would still be powerful. Saruman wanted the Ring too, but even he knew he only wanted the ring so that he could create his own ring, with the ring of power he'd also enhance his power and be able to oppose Mordor. Same thing would happen if Galadriel took the ring.
@fweredont - She was most definitely more than just an Elf (she definitely had magic) and a Ring of her own. She also had an Army of Elves in Lorien at her disposal. If she were to turn evil by wielding the one ring, they would most likely fall under her spell. Also, if one of the bearers of the 3 elf rings were to fall under the power of the One. She would also command Elrond and Gandalf easily as they had the other two.
@ChristopherDGentry I wasn't referring to Gandlolf, I meant the white guy with the sword who just looks to the left and then the right before grabbing frodo :p
@Number1ricky In Peter Jackson's version apparently, but Tolkien does not portray magic the same way J.K. Rowling does. Usually power is shown in form of verse or even self-declaration. At the battle of Helm's Deep (in the book) Aragorn proclaimed the destruction of Saruman's army. The Orcs were unmoved, but the Wild Men fighting for Saruman began to turn dejectedly and doubt, even though they were clearly about to win. That is kind of how magic works through the LoTR and the Silmarillion.
@HistoryLubber woah dude, dude, I wasn't talking about Gandolf at all. I was referring to the guy with the sword who just looks to the right and then the left as Gandalf starts to fall :p

The real question is whether the Balrogs of Morgoth had wings at all, as Tolkien never explicitly stated one way or the other.
To my recollection, Tolkien simply described Durin's Bane as being veiled in wing-esque shadows.
