Digging with a stone pick and stone shovel would be faster than using a wood pick and a ladder. Would probably be more efficient to bring extra log and your bench down with you so you can use spare stone to make a furnace to make charcoal from your logs and then torches to safely explore the underground. :P
@luigibarqs I found it to be faster that if you don't have anything around you cave wise, to just go straight down, with a wood axe, wood pick, and optionally a wood shovel, and just grab the work bench, which I forgot to do. I would have then made a furnace and mined out the coal around me. I did not really explore to see if there was any caves, so, I don't know if I could have gotten stone sooner. over all, it only took me 17 minutes to find diamond. thats impressive.
