Chatter - excitement, frustration e.g. when prey is out of reach or escapes (involves rapid teeth-chattering jaw movements). It can be heard during play time.
One of my cats do this. I never heard a cat do this before her, my old past cat never made that noise before atleast not in front of me. I thought it was the strangest sound from a cat, and thought she was mimicing a squirel she saw (this is when i first heard the noise from her)
my cat does this too. I usually just twirl some thick string or a necklace over my head until you can hear it woosh. Then cat stares overhead and makes that chatter sound.
he says. birdie i let you die in agony. i tear you apart. eat your wings first. and play basketball with your head....hrrr that will be fun...muahahaha
My cats do this but ONLY when they see birds. They do not make such sounds when they see Rodents. I would like to research this more as animal communication is fascinating.
Funny, I think of that as being the bug-hunting noise. I have seen several cats make this noise, but only when hunting bugs. I would say that maybe the bugs substituted for their access to larger prey, but one of the cats with this behavior was also a might hunter. He brought his human a *pigeon* on more than one occasion. o_0
hahaha my female cat does this same thing when it sees a bird, but only to birds. I guess cuz all my other cats have caught a bird, and they rarely do this, so she is probably pissed that she hasnt got one.
It is so funny how focused cats are when they do this. It's like the only thing they even notice sometimes is the lazer pointer, bird, squirrel, or whatever they're chattering at. It is so cute!
I had a cat for 18 years and I never saw her do this even once. I didn't even know cats did this until many years after she died! It's so funny. I wonder what the purpose of it is.
That is so weird we always had cats growing up and and I never saw anything like it. My 3 month old kitten does this when he sees a bug he freaks me out!
Many feline behavior specialists have noted the similarity of that noise to the special neck bite that cats use in the wild designed to kill a bird or small rodent quickly and efficiently, before they have a chance to struggle. Young kittens and cubs in the wild have the opportunity to practice this special bite; house cats may just be showing their excitement at seeing potential prey, or possibly their frustration (with the excitement, too) in seeing potential prey that they cannot get to.
@kyokushinfighter78 Yeah my cat does this when I shine the laser on the ceiling where she can't get to it. She stops the chattering when I bring the laser back down to the floor where she can chase it.
@kyokushinfighter78 cats do this when seeing birds. they are probably trying to mimic a birds calls in order to lure the bird to flying near the cat so the cat can capture and eat the bird. animal behavior is governed by evolutionary adaptive principals. birds are primary prey for cats. thus it is likely that along the way they have developed all kinds of complex behavioral ways of trying to capture and kill birds.
My sisters cat does the same thing whenever someone puts a light reflection on the walls and moves it around ... can anyone tell me what it means when a cat does that? I find it really interesting and would like to learn more on it
My cat loves doing that when i get out the laser pointer
